Oddly enough, getting chicken pox. I got to stay home while my sister had to go to school. I remember my Mom cleaning out the cedar chest and we got to go through everything. Even back then I loved family history and the stories that went with all the seemingly unimportant stuff :) Oh, and at the end of the year our teacher gave us a jar filled with petrified rocks, shells and fossils. I still have it and still love it!

My kindergarten class did a musical rendition of ‘Chicken Little’ and I got to be Chicken Little. My teacher said I had a sweet singing voice. While that may have been true when I was 5 it’s certainly not the case now!

Well, they didn't have kindergarten back when I started school (1970's). Kindergarten was introduced the year after my first grade. In all honesty, I was one small step away from being placed in the one-room schoolhouse for a year, but since it was closing the subsequent year, my parents thought it would be best for me to start at the school that I would need to be attending in upcoming years. All of this to say that I don't have a kindergarten memory, but I have an early 1st Grade one. I still remember my 1st Grade teacher calling me up to the board to write the answer to 2+3. I was super nervous and took a few seconds to think about my answer. While I was doing that, Mrs. T. was saying, "Look class, at how Frozen Canuck is thinking through the question before writing her answer." By that point, I had written a "5" on the board, Mrs. T. told me that my answer was correct, and I was beaming!

Mrs. T. was an awesome teacher. I remember a number of things that we did in her class. I still make every effort to go back and visit her when I am home. She is now over 100 years old!!! Each time I knock on her door, I tell her who I am and how I know her and then we sit and chat for a little while about some of the memories that I have from her class. I say things like, "I remember this fabulous drawing you did of Mr. Mugs on the chalkboard and then you wrote all of the sight words around him." She would respond with, "Oh! I was a terrible at drawing!" and we have a good laugh.

The classroom had a large wooden train with engine, caboose and cars in the center that we kids could sit in. On the negative side the school had a $ .25 a visit dentist office just down the hall.. enough said!

My teacher's name was Mrs. Lord. pixiedust:

Kindergarten over here refers to pre-prep schooling, where you go for the first few years of your life.

I remember finding out that cookies and milk tasted AWESOME.

Being chosen to be the "cheese stands alone" in the Farmer in the Dell, playing the triangle during music circle, and being the wake-up fairy who waved a yardstick over the other kids after rest time.

Oh, so many...
  • I was scared to death to go to school and I didn't speak, not to anyone, for about 2 weeks. The teacher rearranged our desks into little pods with two students facing each other, and I am pretty sure she did that because of me, to make me interact with someone. It worked too.
  • The most popular toy at playtime was Little People Western Town, with the trap door on the roof.
  • We did Mouscersize! (Yup, it was the '80s.)
  • We watched The Secret of Nimh for a movie once.
  • My older sister once entered the room to get me for something and one of the other kids in class yelled really loudly "I WANNA MARRY YOU!"
  • That same kid took a picture of some fancy car from one of our books and showed it to every kid in class individually with the statement "Bad to the bone!" I don't know why.
  • We could earn chips for good behavior that could be used at the end of the month to buy ice cream and such
Man, now I miss Kindergarten!

We had this series of alphabet workbooks. A large workbook for each letter, I think. I loved all the bright colors and activities. When I was in high school or college, I asked my mom if I could have them and she said she'd thown them out. :sad1: Thanks mom...

Then, this teacher everyone loved, had groups of kids sleep over at her house! I remember going with a few other kids and thinking it was so cool. Of course that would never fly these days. I can't even imagine. But this was back around 1974ish.

I loved mousercise!!

I remember that I didn't like kindergarten very much... so any day when the teacher didn't have to talk to my mom about my behavior was a good day! ;)

Gosh, I just realized I don't remember much about kindergarten.

I remember that we used to sing "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" every morning.
I remember that the girls' washroom had a large circular sink with a foot pedal to turn it on
I had a really cool pencil sharpener shaped like a TV. The 'screen' changed when you tipped it back and forth.

I guess kindergarten is still optional in 35 states in the U.S. Not California, I attended 1962-1963. My wife was in Texas, and it was still optional there. My FIL would have been in kindergarten in Texas in about 1935, except he got expelled on the second day!

I wouldn't say I have any "favorite" memories, but I have memories that stand out...

I was the only girl in the class of 12.

My "boyfriend" and I got caught kissing when we were sent out of the room together while the class played a game.

Another boy brought a gun to show-and-tell. He was allowed to fire it toward the ceiling. Afterward, when the teacher wasn't looking, he pointed it at me and said, "You're dead at recess." Instead, I hid, and when the teacher found me and I told her about it, she laughed and said not to worry, she had the gun.

We got our first library cards and walked around the corner to the branch library once a week. We would go downstairs to have a snack and watch a small movie, then go choose 2 books. We had to leave the books at the school for everyone to enjoy during the week.

We had those thin chocolate and vanilla cookies (without the filling) and milk for snack.

My 3rd sister walking me home from school during her lunch (we were in a K-12 school, K was half day, and she was a senior).

My best friend lived caddy-corner behind us and he would come over and play Barbies (he had Lone Ranger and horses to save her!)

Sitting on the carpet whilst our teacher told us a story or sang with us and colouring. My main memories of my first year of school!
