Well, they didn't have kindergarten back when I started school (1970's). Kindergarten was introduced the year after my first grade. In all honesty, I was one small step away from being placed in the one-room schoolhouse for a year, but since it was closing the subsequent year, my parents thought it would be best for me to start at the school that I would need to be attending in upcoming years. All of this to say that I don't have a kindergarten memory, but I have an early 1st Grade one. I still remember my 1st Grade teacher calling me up to the board to write the answer to 2+3. I was super nervous and took a few seconds to think about my answer. While I was doing that, Mrs. T. was saying, "Look class, at how Frozen Canuck is thinking through the question before writing her answer." By that point, I had written a "5" on the board, Mrs. T. told me that my answer was correct, and I was beaming!
Mrs. T. was an awesome teacher. I remember a number of things that we did in her class. I still make every effort to go back and visit her when I am home. She is now over 100 years old!!! Each time I knock on her door, I tell her who I am and how I know her and then we sit and chat for a little while about some of the memories that I have from her class. I say things like, "I remember this fabulous drawing you did of Mr. Mugs on the chalkboard and then you wrote all of the sight words around him." She would respond with, "Oh! I was a terrible at drawing!" and we have a good laugh.
