What was Disney thinking??!?!?!?

I would have probably said something to a CM nearby. That bothers me, as a mother with two preschoolers. Yikes.

Yes, I think this kind of thing needs to be brought to Disney's attention, via CMs. Nothing will change if people who notice it do not challenge it. I am sure it wasn't deliberate on Disney's part, but they probably do not put a lot of thought into that kind of thing. If they know that it is important to guests I think they would make an effort to eliminate unhappy guests by monitoring it. They probably do not even have a policy on music played near attractions regarding lyrics, but maybe if enough guests make their feelings know, a policy can be put in place and implemented to ensure positive guest experience.

Makes you want to dance, which is a sin. I went to a private high school too. No prom for me! we had a Jr/Sr " banquet with no music or dancing That's why my children will go to a public high school after spending their elementary years in a private school. Better academics in a private school but silly rules. I had to wear long skirts every day too. coolattas ? Funny thing, we went to magic kingdom on senior trip. Lol!

i gotta ask, does the term "independent fundametalist" ring any bells? if so, we went to similar type schools:scared1:

Haha! We had a Jr/Sr banquet too. We could wear prom dresses but they had to be long and we had to wear a sweater over them. We did have culottes for gym and other activities. We were allowed capris on senior trip to Florida. Guess they thought we were almost done so it didn't matter any more. Plus our trip chaperones were the two most laid back teachers. Still had to attend church on our trip though!

I went to Indiana Christian Academy, an affiliate of Grace Baptist Church, founded by graduates of Bob Jones University. While I still am a baptist ( not a crazy one, I swear!) I find most of the rules of my school to be stupid. Actually in the ten+ years since I graduated, they've relaxed a LOT! Girls can wear warm up pants for gym now! Pants! Agh! Lol!

Currently at DHS for EMH and was walking past Disney Jr. When I heard the song Blurred Lines blasting from the stereo system. I stopped to listen as I like the song, and quickly realized that they did NOT edit the song from the radio version down to something a bit more child friendly.

I am not a prude by any stretch, but I don't think having the line "the way you grab me/must wanna get nasty" blasting from the front of an attraction designed for the preschool crowd is appropriate.

I question the thinking of blasting ANY pop songs anywhere in a Disney park. It drove me nuts in May. Felt like I was at some random amusement park, not in Disney.

I also have to agree with OP. While I agree kids can hear that and worse on most radio stations today, you don't expect Disney to be the place that they are exposed to questionable lyrics. Disney is supposed to be the magical escape from reality, no? My children are 2 & 4 and I don't play music with foul or questionable lyrics around them, even if I like to listen to some of it myself when they are not present. My DD2 has just really gotten into a singing phase the past few weeks and is now singing all the songs to her favorite Disney Junior cartoons. I realize that they don't really "get" what the lyrics mean yet but I really don't want my DD2 walking around singing foul lyrics either, nor do I wish to invite the "mommy what does .......... mean?" in the middle of WDW. Those ARE conversations that will be had, but later, and not in the middle of vacation at WDW, KWIM?

Getting off-topic here, but my uncle (God rest his soul) was a graduate of Bob Jones. He had very strict rules in his household. His wife always wore a skirt. His daughters were not allowed to wear two-piece bathing suits, and wore a t-shirt on top of that. At his church picnics, no shorts or tank tops were allowed. The Disney channel was outlawed because Disney condoned homosexuality.

Steering clear of religion ;) I'm going to agree that that was a poor choice in music! And as PP mentions, I prefer Disney music at WDW. Even at non-Disney parks I prefer instrumental background music. Feels more vacationy than what I can hear if I just turn on the radio.

This has been interesting to read. My daughter goes to a Christian School and they give the high school students a prom: dresses, tuxedos, dancing and all. Dresses do have to be to the knees and there’s lots of chaperones, but they do have it for them. They get to hear regular music, but it goes through a screening process first. Of course during the week they have bible classes, have chapel and have lots of rules. And they wear uniforms: pants, shorts or capris, and skirts in navy, brown, black and polo shirts and blouses in yellow, white, light blue or navy. But they say the party, just like having sports or anything else is to strive to give the children a balanced experience. Also goes to honoring the sacrifice the parents are making spending money on tuition every month.

I agree. And the fact is that music does influence you. The beat definitely does but so do those lyrics. Though we may not "think" too much of them at the time they do get in our head. For those that know the meaning if the words that is bad enough. Young children (and really even older but that is past centuries) should not have to be subjected to those kinds of influences and especially on a "family friendly" vacation.

I disagree. From the day I was born my older brother played his records for me (Blondie, Michael Jackson, Debbie Harry, etc) and then I was in dance classes through high school where current popular music was used. No censorship.

I did not start dressing provocatively, throw myself all over boys, or become promiscuous.

When I got to an age where I was becoming aware of lyrics my mom opened the dialogue about what stuff meant and why it was appropriate or not. I intend to use the same method with my daughter. Of course I'm not going to play songs dropping f-bombs or anything, but I'm not going to turn off Blurred Lines if it comes on the radio.

I think each family is different about what they are ok with their kids listening to or hearing, and that's cool.

I will say that it's almost impossible to put together a truly kid-friendly playlist of pop songs. I tried to do it once for my DD's birthday party and I ended up buying a whole bunch of Kids Bop songs because almost every regular song had something in it that was a bit dodgey.

A lot of the shows on the Disney channel are inappropriate, but they make Disney a lot of money, so Disney really doesn't care.

On a related note, have you seen the program line-up for "ABC Family" recently? Now I understand why they came up with the tag line "A Different Kind of Family."

I thought it had something to do with how hot drummers are. My dh drums (not professionally) and I could watch him all day! :rotfl:

two-fold...you can dance to a beat...but also, the 4/4 timing of a rock drum beat is not in sync with your heartbeat...thus defiling one's body, therefore a sin...ridiculous, i know. i could digress into a whole host of legalistic crap that we were fed but this isn't the place.

I can honestly say I have never ever heard that before. You are right, ridiculous!

I've always wondered why it was ABC Family. I cant say I'd ever sit down with my family and watch any of those shows.

i always chuckle when on RnR...i went to private Jr. & Sr. highschool where we were taught that rock-n-roll was sinful, not only because the lyrics and lifestyle but because of the drum beat. now we go to the house of Mickey and have an entire attraction based on Aerosmith, a great band who is a rock-n-roll as they get. I love it when at a sports arena plays Ozzy...we were told we would become devil worshippers listening to that...anyone remember the PMRC? boy have times changesd.

BTW, i do agree with the OP.

Rock On! :rockband:

Coming in late, but I HAD to respond to this.

I'm pretty sure I had a "**** (<---censored myself there) the PMRC" t-shirt. LOL. Tipper Gore was the anti-Christ and I hated her so much. I was a total hair metal fan when I was in high school (OK, OK, I still am!). My adult self looks back and still wonders how a Liberal like Tipper Gore somehow got involved in all that. In my mind, back then she was the equivalent of a right-wing conservative. Of course, my adult self also realizes that all they wanted to do was put warning labels on music...fine. Though I still believe those warning lables just makes kids want that music more.

To bring this back to the OP...I have no idea what the song you're referring to is because I pretty much listen to nothing that was recorded after 1999. But I really don't think that songs with inappropriate lyrics have a place in Disney. AAAAAAHHHHH...I've become Tipper Gore!!!

A questionable choice for play at a Disney park, at best.

Background

"Blurred Lines" was produced by Thicke and Williams with an intention of creating a sound similar to Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give It Up". The song was completed in almost an hour.[3] In an interview with GQ, Thicke explained: "Pharrell and I were in the studio and [...] I was like, 'Damn, we should make something like that [Got to Give It Up], something with that groove.' Then he started playing a little something and we literally wrote the song in about a half hour and recorded it. Him and I would go back and forth where I'd sing a line and he'd be like, 'Hey, hey, hey!' We started acting like we were two old men on a porch hollering at girls like, 'Hey, where you going, girl? Come over here!'" On being quizzed about the racy content of the song, Thicke responded: "We tried to do everything that was taboo. Bestiality, drug injections, and everything that is completely derogatory towards women. Because all three of us are happily married with children, we were like, 'We're the perfect guys to make fun of this.' People say, 'Hey, do you think this is degrading to women?' I'm like, 'Of course it is. What a pleasure it is to degrade a woman. I've never gotten to do that before. I've always respected women.'"[4] In a separate interview, Thicke clarified the meaning of the song's title, saying it referred to "the good-girl/bad-girl thing and what’s appropriate."[5]

DD loves that song. Questionable lyrics are educational in our household. It is pretty difficult to turn on the radio without many of the songs needing to be explained a bit these days. Thrift Shop is another favorite, and there are words in songs that my kids know they need to skip when singing. For instance, my DS sings " I'm Samuel and I know it" instead of saying the word "sexy". :rotfl2: Actually, he completely rewrote that entire song with his own words. It is really pretty amazing. As for the dance party, they probably shouldn't have played it, but no one was held captive in the building. If they play a song you don't like, take your kid out for a break. It gets hot in there anyway. We take breaks all of the time. We've been going to that dance party for years. They always play a mix of kid songs and current songs. That is nothing new. They played I'm Sexy and I Know It at the Toy Story dance party a couple of years ago at MNSSHP. It didn't seem to bother anyone, and those lyrics are worse than Blurred Lines, IMHO.

Personally I am sick of hearing pop music blaring everywhere from theme parks to Panera. It's just noise pollution. I love music but I can listen to it when I want and I just don't need it forced into my ears everywhere I go. In kids areas I'd prefer some soft calming but fun carousel type music.

Carousel music would not work in a dance party setting.:confused3 Unless the kids would like to do the waltz or something. :rotfl2:DS knows how to do that, but he prefers the faster stuff. :goodvibes

Wow. Just...wow.

Thank you for taking time out from yelling at kids to get off your lawn to come and post this. ;)

As a kid in a car seat I knew all the lyrics to "Papa Don't Preach" but had no idea what the song was really about. If your kid "gets it" they already know more than you want them to know. If you don't react to the "wanna get nasty" they'll never notice.

Bless you. A voice of reason. Cursing is one thing. Innuendo, harmless.
