reading another thread that has eating miracle whip almost a marriage breaker....... what the heck is so wrong about it?

I grew up with it, so guess I prefer it.

but isn't it mayo with sugar in it?

my mother in law used to add sugar to potato salad , etc, so what the heck is the diff?

I don't get it, why THAT item is so contentious :confused3

yes, the sugar.

I'm sorry, sugar in potato salad is gross!

I don't like sugar in red gravy either (sauce for the rest of you), so that's just me.

DH and I both prefer Miracle Whip, as does my whole family. "Real" mayonnaise is just too sweet to me.

I think Miracle Whip is an acquired taste. It wasn't available in my small town growing up so I can remember when the stores started to carry it. I thought the commercials were fun. So, my momma bought me a jar after she made sure I understood it wasn't mayo. I thought it was awful stuff. I'm just a regular mayo girl no miracle whip for me.

By the way, I thought the jar said it was something similar to salad dressing and not mayo

I like it. I prefer my tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches made with it... like a little bit of sweetness to them I guess. Its how my mom always made them growing up so I guess it is just what you get used to! :)

I stand corrected, there is sugar in mayo.

I don't what the difference is I guess, I just don't like Miracle Whip!

And I still don't like sugar in potato salad!

Sugar in potato salad or deviled eggs is gross to me, blah.

I do not hate MW, but I do prefer Mayo.

I could only eat MW on sandwiches though, not in potato salad. I could do deviled eggs but 100% prefer Mayo.

MW is sweet, sour, tangy and creamy. Mayo is milder, lighter, and more "sour", I suppose if I had to describe them.

To me Mayo has no taste- I would imagine vaseline tasting just about the same.

I love Mayo and to me Blue Plate is the best. Miracle Whip has an odd taste. Can't put my finger on it just has a weird taste.

I grew up with Best Foods and still us it today. I actually loved miracle whip growing up and my mother refused to buy it since she thought it was disgusting.

I loved it when I was at a friends house and we would be making sandwiches for lunch and they had it! My old boss would bring in a huge bowl of chicken salad on occasion and she always put miracle whip in it. She said it was the only thing she used it for and didn't like it otherwise. It was so yummy!

I think I now need to go buy a small jar and have a bologna sandwich with it. I haven't had one in over 10 years and with everyone talking about it lately I have been craving it!

To answer your question OP. I really don't get the extreme emotion behind it. If you hate it and your SO loves it why can't you just buy both? Is MW like the bad kid in class? Are you worried that he is going to contaminate the Best Foods and be bad a influence? Maybe start a revolution in your frig?

Mayo vs Miracle Whip

Mayo is the abbreviated term that is commonly used for Mayonnaise. Mayo is simply an emulsion that contains oil, salt, vinegar, and egg yolks as its primary ingredients. Mayo is often the base for a wide variety of salad dressings and sandwich spreads. Miracle whip is just one of those salad dressings that use mayo. Aside from mayo, miracle whip also includes other ingredients, like spices, changing its taste and making it sweeter. The origin of miracle whip is shrouded in mystery. Kraft claims that they came up with it from their own experimentation while others claim that it was sold to the company by a café owner in Illinois way back in 1931.

I think it's just an acquired taste. I grew up on Hellman's. I don't *hate* Miracle Whip by any means and if someone makes me a sandwich with it, I have no problems. I would never use it to make a mayonnaise-based recipe, though, such a potato salad. Not that I think it's "wrong" or "weird" but I think those types of dishes rely on standard ingredients that carry the overall flavor of a dish. I guess if you grew up on potato salad made with Miracle Whip, you'd be perfectly fine with it.

I guess I personally like the fact that mayo is boring and doesn't impart a strong flavor. Miracle Whip definitely gives a noticeable flavor and can be cloyingly sweet to me. It's really okay as a sandwich spread but I wouldn't want to use it in a dish.

We are a two spread household. DH likes his Miracle Whip and I love my Best Foods mayo. I agree, I think its an acquired taste or what you are used to. I actually like MW in a deviled egg but have never used it for anything but DH's sandwiches myself. I prefer the salty creamy of mayo over the sweet of MW

My Great Grandmother never put sugar in her potato salad but she said her secret ingredient was sweet pickle juice. I could see adding sugar instead

That thread started out as being very tongue in cheek and quickly moved to not so nice.

Of course no one is really breaking up over mayo vs. miracle whip.

I am not sure I have ever had miracle whip. I don't care for mayo that much unless it is in something, like salad dressing, so it isn't something I have a firm opinion on either way.

We do keep mayo in the house as it often is called for in recipes, but I don't like it on a sandwich.

I grew up with MW, but my husband hates it so I don't usually buy it. I love me some MW sandwiches lol...I may have to buy some now

I grew up on Miracle Whip. To me, MW was "mayonnaise." On the rare occasion that I encountered real mayo somewhere, I didn't like it.

At some point as an adult, I acquired a taste for mayo and now I keep both MW and Hellman's in the fridge. Miracle Whip is still the only thing I like in any sandwich or salad involving eggs (including deviled eggs and tuna salad, in which I put hard boiled egg). But I prefer mayo on "deli"-type sandwiches (sliced-meat-and-cheese). Mustard is only for burgers and dogs and a little goes a long way for me.

I love a scrambled egg sandwich with MW on a croissant.

I'm a Hellman's girl myself. We never had MW as a child--Mother preferred real mayo. DH was raised with MW. I've converted him to Hellman's over the past several years.:goodvibes. I will eat MW--but it's a tad sweet.

To me it's like the difference between butter and margarine. Both have their uses but only one is the "real" thing while the other is a substitute.
