What songs make you sad?

I agree with some of the songs listed already.
Ave Maria will reduce me to tears at the first notes. It was my Gram's favorite Christmas song and remnds me of her and how much I miss her.

Seasons in the Sun by Terry Jacks. It's an oldie but I can't hear it without crying.

Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) by GreenDay. My DD wants this played at her funeral, she's 23 and not dying but planning ahead.

It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday by Boys 2 Men.

yeah good riddance makes me think of all of the boyfriends that dumped me and I dumped

"Someday When I Stop Loving You"- Carrie Underwood.

"You are my Sunshine".

Starry Starry Nights by Don McCLain

One More Day - forget who sings this - reminds me of my dogs who passed

How Great Thou Art - reminds me of my gram, her fav song

One song that makes me sad is Goodbye Love from Rent. I have had several friendships fall apart in similar dramatic fashion without the music. That and the line "I'd be happy to die for a taste of what Angel had, someone to live for. I'm afraid to say I love you." Many, many tears.

Another is A Little Fall of Rain from Les Mis. I always like Eponine better.

A Bad Goodbye with Clint Black and Wynona Judd also makes me sad.

The one song always guaranteed to make me cry tears of joy: It Is Well With My Soul.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton

I Will Remember You by Sarah McLachlan (on the commercial for ASPCA, it is sooooo sad but I still love it)

/
I Wish it Would Rain by the Temptations
angels Amoung us Alabama
A Change Is Going to Come Sam Cooke
If I Can Dream Elvis

Okay, this is gonna sound silly. "I Got A Feeling" by Black-Eyed Peas.

When my mom's liver failed initially last late July, for some reason every time I went to the hospital to visit her, the song would play on the way there.... and on the way back. She improved a lot at that point, and came home after a few weeks, and lasted until the end of last month. So back then, it seemed like it was a good omen. I heard it again, on my way home from the hospital on 3/25 after she died, and I had to pull over so I could sob my heart out, and let the whole song play through. Since then I've changed the station when it comes on; it just makes me too sad now. :guilty:

"Kilkelly, Ireland" by Jim Branningan

"My Immortal" by Evanescence

"And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Liam Clancy

I know the first and third of these and I agree! I was thinking, reading the list, I don't know half of the songs listed (don't listen to country or Celine Dion).

No one has mentioned the song guaranteed to make me cry - Turn Around (turn around and you're 2, turn around and you're 4, turn around you're a young girl going out of my door)

There are several church hymns that make me cry also, because I associate them with funerals.

My Old Kentucky Home. I pretty much wail when they play it on derby day.
Then I cry fifteen minutes later when my horse loses.

In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins. The song doesn't make me sad as much as it makes me feel guilty. "Well, I was there and I saw what you did ... Saw it with my own two eyes ..."

Think of Laura by Christopher Cross. Any "General Hospital" old-schoolers remember when they played this song when Laura returned to GH in '83? "Think of Laura but laugh, don't cry ... I know she'd want it that way ..."

Fire and Rain by James Taylor. The lyric "Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you" gets me every time.

All at Once By Whitney Houston. Ugh, memories of a bad high school break-up. "The smile that used to greet me, brightens someone else's day ... She took your smile away ..."

Edelweiss from "The Sound of Music". "Blossom of snow may you bloom and grow ... Bloom and grow forever ..."

Me and Little Andy by Dolly Parton. I first heard this song when I was six or seven and I was a complete mess!! "Now Sandy and her puppy dog won't ever be alone ..."

The Rainbow Connection from "The Muppet Movie". "Have you been half-asleep, and have you heard voices? I've heard them calling my name ..."

How Will I Live Without You? - Leeann Rimes "How will I ever, ever survive ...?"

I Will Remember You - Sarah McLachlan "Weep not for the memories ..."

I love this song, too, although I prefer Kate Bush's original version! Definitely makes the tears flow. :sad1:

I've only heard Kate Bush's version, and I swear, when I read this thread, thats the only song I could think of that makes me cry. I know there are more, I just can't think of any.
Kate Bush sounds so ethereal on that song. It always gives me chills.

Apocalyptica song "I don't care"
&
Evanescence "Call me when you are Sober"

because they are both about being abandoned when the person you need to survive chooses to give you up rather than do the right thing because you're too much trouble... I don't think there is anything sadder then being forced to choose between self preservation or severing ties over someone you want to have love you because they willfully choose not to do so:sad1:

"No Woman No Cry" by Bob Marley This song reminds me of my strengths and how far I've come.

"My funny Valentine" by Rogers and Hart or "What'll i do" by Irving Berlin

"What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong always gets me. For no real reason, it just does.

"That's What Friends Are For" by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder also makes me sad.

Aw, sorry to hear "What a Wonderful World" makes you sad. :(

That was the song our DD and her new DH danced their first dance together at their wedding, so anytime I hear it it brings back wonderful memories and I just have to smile.

For me, there are two songs that come to mind and I tear up anytime they come on the radio, and I always have to mute/or change the station.

1) How Do I Help You Say Goodbye - Patty Loveless, that was my DH's Mom's song when she was getting really bad with ALS and she wrote letters to her children, and wrote out the lyrics of that song.

2) Daddy's Hands - Holly Dunn, my Dad and I roller skated together to that song many times when our local rink had adult skating on Tuesday mornings during the fall/winter months many years ago. He passed away 2 years ago.
