Has anyone ever witnessed the sound going mute for no reason on your Nintendo Switch?

I was playing my Nintendo Switch tonight and when I was playing a game the sound became mute for no reason and this is the second time it has done this and I would like to know if anyone who owns a Nintendo Switch witnessed this before? I did not push any buttons except the main buttons when I played my game but the sound became mute for no reason and I would love to know how to unmute the sound on the Nintendo Switch? I searched everywhere but found no clue and the strange thing about this is the volume control is up but when you play a game the sound is mute and is there a way to keep this from happening in the future? Also can changing games be linked to this problem? I never had this problem with my Nintendo Switch until it happened the first time and then I had sound until tonight when it became muted for no reason and the Nintendo Switch has never ever been thrown or dropped on the floor

The Nintendo Switch game I was playing when I started having no sound on my Switch was Disney's Magical World 2 and as I mentioned before this is the second time this has happened when I have played it. So I think that it must be this game that causes this problem. Mom and I had tried my other Switch games and they had no sound either and like I mentioned before I did not press any other buttons on my Switch and it has never ever been dropped or thrown on the floor and I handle it with lots of care and I know it's not me that causes this problem because like I said before I don't touch any other buttons when I have played it before

Are you playing in docked or handheld mode? That may make a difference. Also, do you use headphones, or the native speakers? Have you rebooted it completely? You said it was the second time, so does the issue persist or did it go back to normal after changing games?

I tried to have Mom fix my Nintendo Switch and it still has muted sound but I cannot figure out why the sound became muted? Because I never have messed with it and I seem to think that there is a mute button that is hidden on the Switch but Mom said that there is no mute button on the Nintendo Switch. I play it in handheld mode and use the native speakers and when this happened to me yesterday for the second time it shocked me.and now we tried every trick in the book to fix this problem but have gotten nowhere. But we are gonna try to fix it tomorrow and see what happens

Try to plug in some headphones and see if there is sound coming from them. First, check the headphone jack as if something got lodged in there, the system may think it should be using headphones and thus muting the speakers. Just a possibility.

If the headphones worked, then it is unlikely that anything is interfering with the jack, so you're good on that front. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what else could be the cause. Have you tried to do a system update? Sometimes that can sort out any software bugs, if that's the cause.

Me and Mom attempted to fix my Nintendo Switch today but we didn't have much luck and I tried the headphones on it and it worked okay but Mom tried to do a system update but we learned the Nintendo Switch has to connect to the internet to update. Another thing i'd love to know is if you turn the Nintendo Switch on and off too many times could that mess up the sound and cause it to go mute too? Mom thinks this might be a possibility because I usually turn it off when I am finished playing with it. We will be working on fixing it tomorrow and hope we get good luck

I wouldn't think that turning it off and on should affect the sound, though putting it in sleep mode is okay. You definitely need an internet connection to do the system update. If you haven't been connected regularly, you may very well need an update as they heppen fairly often. It coud correct the issue, but they are important for other reasons too.

If you can't get it, I do recommend tha tyou call Nintendo - 1-800-255-3700. They may be able to provide further advice.

To me it sounds like the Switch’s speaker has “died” or gone bad. It probably doesn’t have anything to do with anything you did. The fact that you still have sound through headphones, tells me that the problem is in the built-in speaker, and not some “mute” function that you somehow accidentally activated.


If you only got it this past Christmas you should definitely call the Nintendo customer service phone number that BrianL gave:

I’m pretty sure your Switch would still be under warranty. I'm pretty sure the warranty is 1 year. But you’ll need to call and talk to the customer service representative and troubleshoot before they can authorize a repair or replacement.

They’ll probably want you to make sure it is fully updated. It’s not hard to connect it to your WiFi — just go into the settings menu*:

• Press the home button (looks like a house on rt. side of controller)
• Near the bottom of the screen, there’s a row of circles.
• The second circle from the right (looks like a gear) is the “System Settings” (as always, tap screen or press A to select)
• Scroll down the list on the left, and select “Internet”, then “Internet Settings”
• The Switch will automatically search for WiFi networks— select yours from the list.
• If you’ve connected before—Select “Connect to this Network.” and it will connect.
• If you’ve never connected before, (or if your password has changed since you last connected), you’ll be prompted for the network password. Enter it. (So much easier using touchscreen).

After you are connected to WiFi”

• Scroll to bottom of the settings menu on the left of the settings screen.
• Select “System”
• Then select “System Update” Current version is 20.1.5
• If needed the system will install an update.

Once you have it updated to the current software version (version 20.1.5], then give Nintendo Customer Service a call at the phone number above.

* {I apologize if you already know how to do all this. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to include the steps, just in case… better safe than sorry and all that. }

Did you contact Nintendo? Your Switch is pretty new, right? I don't know that it's a common problem, but it may indeed be a known issue that they can help correct.

Your mom, as usual, is wrong again. The only real issue with them has been the joy-cons, nothing to do with sound.

You're an adult, take the initiative and connect your Switch to the internet for updates and see if that fixes the problem. If not, then contact Nintendo for repair.
