My feet are very tender. I keep trying new combos of sneakers and socks. I like to walk and use my ellipical so I am usually doing 1 hours total workouts walking at a brisk pace but not running. Especially one the ellipical my feet start to get numb and the look :scared1: with all the rough skin, etc....

Any suggestions? P.S~ I NEED a wide shoe. Help!

I used to buy shoes at SportMart or Sam's Club - on sale - I know New Balance is great at making shoes with the wide width -

but since I joined the WISH team (event/comp forum, all are welcome, just post and you are part of the team!!)

they strongly encouraged me (and others) to go to a running shoe store - so I tried it! The shoe store has a treadmill, and they ask you to walk at the pace you usually exercise at, and they watch your gait - your foot... I pronate (my ankles turn in almost touching the ground!) then they fit your foot - I was shocked at the size they recommended - but they were so right!! I didnt fully appreciate it until after the Half Marathon!! They also recommended socks - I only got minor blisters that went away after a day -

so that would be what I would suggest - find out where the nearest running specialty store is in your area!! Try on the shoes - and then you can look online for that brand - or buy them there!!

good luck!

definately if you are going to be powerwalking or running...visit a running store to get fitted.

that said i'm a tried and true NB gal and i have a wide foot. however i do wear orthotics in my shoes as well after devleoping tendonitis in my foot from adding mileage too quick

recently i tried to get a pair of NB at a local sports store, easier on the budget, and ended up at the NB store within 3-4 months. not much of a savings, eh?

also, are you wearing coolmax, wicking type socks?

my toes get numb about 30 mins into an elliptical workout too -- i tried to wiggle them periodicially to help the circulation and I do switch of and go backwards every now and then too. i have heard from others of the same complaint, i think it's more having you feet in the exact same place?

I will have to try a running store. My old Math teacher owns one but I never thought of going there since I am not a runner. (I have 2 left feet)

I did just buy some kind of special socks at BJs and used them today (with a second pair of reg socks) for the first time. They are very thin even though they say they are cushioned.:confused3 Ususally I wear 1 or 2 pairs of Dh's thick socks with inserts in my sneakers.

Sketchers Sports sneaker. THE most comfortable shoe I have ever worn!!

I agree with going to a store that specializes in
running/walking. If the owners/employees are runners,
then they should be able to help you. Make sure they
check your stride, arch, etc.
I wear Asics gels and love them (2 different styles).
I have one pair for the treadmill and one pair for outside.
Different styles of shoes for different jobs.
As for socks, I wear Thorlos socks. They're very padded!
If your feet are sensitive put some bodyglide (or vaseline)
on them to help prevent chafing/blisters etc.
Good luck!

How would I find a shoe store that specializes in running/walking? I live near Disney, anyone know of a good one?

I put off going to a running store and bought some NB shoes at Kohl's. Well within a couple of months, I started having knee and hip pain. Just before (actually a week before) I went to Fleet Feet and got some Asics Gel Kayano shoes. They are like running on :cloud9: .

There is a Fleet Feet close to Orlando. Here is their information. I would highly recommend it.

shoes wise it's really hard to recommed for you but i love my asics nimbus 9 trainers. I've basically been told the main contenders are asics and new balance, but if you can get to one head to a shop that fits running shoes (which i am yet to do :ssst: ). I actually found the biggest difference in condition of the skin on my feet came when i started wearing dri-fit socks (nike wicking ones).

Humm, I didn't think Sketchers come in Wide, at least the shoes at Boscov's don't. I will have to check it out.

Thanks for the other ideas too!

if you are wearing very thick socks with your shoes it is probaby too much for your shoes if your feet are going numb! I find thinner socks are actually better. and they dont cut off the circulation in your feet. your shoes should be cushionny enough to support your feet not to have to double up on socks. get some good wicking socks to keep away the sweat. and get your shoes fitted at a good store. I use Saucany shoes and have been loyal for about 8 years without ANY issues.

I run 4 days a week, and rotate my shoes to extend their life.

I wear Brooks and Saucony, with Thorlo thick running socks.

It's best to try on shoes at the end of the day, when your feet have swollen from walking all day.

I wear my shoes 1/2 to 1 full size larger, to accommodate for my thick socks, and swelling from running.

Hope this helps.

I usually wear Reeboks. They're one of the few shoes that don't give me hip or joint pain.

Another NB fan here, though I am in need of a new pair and will try Asics gel. Also, we have a Sketchers outlet right near me and I am not sure if they actually have a wide width or if their shoes are just cut wide...but they fit me great and I need a wide width as well.

I love Brook Adreline(sp) and swear by nike running socks that are double layered. Last month we were shopping in Chicago I was wearing my loafer not my Brooks and we walked about 5 miles. About half way thru i bought a pair of nike double layer socks and put them under my dress socks. It was the only way i could have continued shopping.

I also 2nd going to a good running store to get fitted after working in Podiatry for 13.5 years most running stores will fit your feet and let you return the shoes for an exchange just in case they dont work as long as you have worn them inside only.

I would also recommend going to a running store to get fitted. I had been running in 7.5 wides because that's what I always wore. When I went to the running store, they bumped me up to an 8 wide and it's perfect. I swear by Asics Gels 2130 (new model that replaced the 2120s)

I love the Asics gel shoes. I also buy them half a size larger than I normally wear, and it works great!

I have really really wide feet! I swear by New Balance. They are the only shoe I have found that can accomodate my feet. Fortunately there is a New Balance store near by so I don't have problems finding my size (I have to have a mens 7.5 4E). Told you they were wide!! At least I'll never fall over. Also, the NB store allows you to try them out for 30 days and if you don't like them you can return them.

Thanks for this thread. I'm just getting started on walking again and I don't like my sneakers that I bought at the outlet store in Williamsburg. Whoever mentioned Fleet Feet - thanks. I just checked my area and there is one near where my father lives and I'm always down that way.
