what not to wear

I'll look it up. There was one woman who hardly found anything, that had to order online, but it is rare.

I watched a couple of episodes with teenaged DGD, and one afternoon we were at DTD quietly critiquing the outfits of people walking past us. I said, "What do you think, honey, what would the WNTW team think of my outfit?" She solemnly looked me over and said in her best Stacy voice "What is WITH those pompom socks?!" I haven't worn pompom socks since that day.

I don't know if you're a regular watcher (I am) but many, many (it feels like probably half) of the episodes feature the women breaking down in tears in the dressing room. There have been many women on the show much larger than a 14 and S&C have always helped them find clothes that fit -- in actual brick and mortar stores, not online -- while remaining kind and enthusiastic.

Yep. It's been a great show. It has been pretty amazing to see the change in affect and self-esteem of so many of the people.

It's too bad it's cancelled. I hadn't heard about that. TLC must be going to go for more of those stupid reality shows like Honey Boo Boo. WNTW was the only thing left on that network that I even watched.

I love the show. Usually they have good advice for people, and most of the time the people seem to feel so much better about themselves in the end.

Here's the one they did of Mayim Bialik before she went on to star on Big Bang Theory http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8QJSw5upZY .
She needs help again.

:goodvibes
I would like to see them do a show directed at the large portion of our society who wear a size 14 or over. It is very hard for plus-size women to find clothes that fit and look great on them, and many of them don't really know how to pick flattering clothes for themselves. The whole tone of the show would have to change, though. Many plus-size women have serious body image issues, so the laughing and teasing wouldn't go over well. Can't show them crying their eyes out in a dressing room because nothing in the store comes in anything higher than a size 6. I'd love to see a show that educates and empowers plus-size women to be the best beautiful woman they can be.
. What is so hard making clothes styles for size 16 if it is being made for a size 6. The clothes would fly off the hangers. I hate ruffles and sequence and red birds on my shirts. You never see anyone in a size 12 or lower sporting birds on a shirt they are wearing, unless it is a sport team.

I think they must have based Amy Farrah Fowler on her pre-What Not to Wear self. Wardrobe and degree!

Her makeover was great. I wish she had kept it up. I also thought it was a classy move to refuse the $5,000 and pay for her clothes herself.

Other than Mayim, I've been really disappointed with the "celebrity" makeovers and wish they had not done so many of them. Shannen Elizabeth was a real snot, and pointless. What's the challenge in dressing a beautiful woman with a perfect figure, who is just lazy (jeans and Uggs)? I would much rather see them take on some apple-shaped housewife with mousy hair and watch them work their magic.

I know!!! I didn't even know who she was, but started watching the show thinking it would be something along the lines of Mayim Bialik or Mindy Cohn where a celebrity had kind of let herself go. I couldn't believe it when they showed someone already looking like a movie star (attitude and all) who had pretty much nominated herself, so I turned it off and deleted it.

Oh, Mindy Cohn was great! She was just like Natalie in real life. That was a good episode. She's a large woman but the outfits took 50 lbs off her. She was pretty sharp, too, about how to dress and how her clothes didn't reflect the smart, confident woman she knew she was. One of the best makeovers.

I must admit, I'm not a regular watcher. I don't think I've ever seen them feature a woman who was larger than a size 12. The minute I hear Clinton gushing over the woman's cute figure I know this show doesn't have anything for me.

I don't know why clothing manufacturers don't get on board with large size clothing. it's very hard to find stylish clothing that a 50yr old business woman would feel comfortable wearing to the office. There is HUGE money to be made here (no pun intended.) I can't shop in Torrid or Lane Bryant much because most of their tops and dresses are cut too low for me. I'm 57 and I just don't really want to show off all my bits, ya know? And I'm pretty sure nobody wants to see them either.:rotfl:

I've never seen the show but I did just want a good chunk of the Mayim Bialik episode. They did a fantastic job with her makeover.

Has she "let herself go" in real life? I know her character on BBT dresses frumpy, but I don't think I've seen any recent, real-life photos of her.

And I would let them do a makeover on me in a heartbeat. I don't think anything they could say about my hair, makeup (or lack thereof) and clothing would be any worse than what the mirror's already said. I would love to have a whole new wardrobe of flattering, fashionable clothing that didn't come from Target!

OK, I'll join you in OT-land, LOL.

The reason is simple: money. There are mfrs who do it, most notablly Eileen Fisher, but the assumption is that if you do not have a sizeable clothing budget, then you are not looking for a stylish professional wardrobe -- the thinking is that you just don't spend much money on clothing because you believe that it won't fit for long.

They have our number, you know. Thanks to the societal pressure to think of being heavy as failing, most of us who are heavier have it in the back of our minds that this is just a temporary situation, and many of us are very reluctant to spend a large amount of money on a wardrobe that we delude ourselves into thinking will need to be replaced soon.

I love Eileen Fisher clothing, but I don't own any. I simply can't afford to pay $160 for a simple skirt.

BTW, while WNTW did feature a fair number of plus-sized women, my issue with the show is that they never showed (or properly discussed) the extensive tailoring that was usually done to make the clothing fit and flatter them so well. It nearly doubles the cost of your wardrobe when you have off-the-rack items tailored to fit. (I always liked the BBC version of the show much better; I was fond of Trinny and Susannah and their acerbic style -- though I never could make sense of Trinny's fondness for dresses worn over trousers.)

I'd go on it. On the whole, I think people leave looking a lot better than they looked before.

Love the show, sad to see it end. For the poster who asked about size 14 and over, I have seen all sizes on the show. They even had a roller derby girl on and she was tall and had a large frame which I think is difficult to dress. I really like Clinton and Stacey and believe it or not, Stacey has been practically anorexic-size to borderline obese for her height. There is a reason why she knows how to dress all sizes.

I thought the one they did for Tiffany was awful. The clothes she bought were much too tight. Whatever happened to going a size up and tailoring down?
