What not to wear?

I would like to see them do a show shopping only at like a Target. Show us what to wear from stores that we can get to. I am within an hour of NYC so I could go in and shop at those stores - but I don't have $5000 lying around to shop.

My grandmother used to say Anyone can look great in a $100 dress(it was a long time ago) but it takes a real beauty to look great in a $10 dress.

Oh but I am loving the new ending- the one where they show EXACTLY what they bought with the whole $5000!

I like that idea. Especially in this economy, it would just make good sense. Many of the item prices on that show are far beyond the practical world.

I always cleaned the house before I took a shower so I usually cleaned in my pj's. I didn't want to get my clothes dirty. When I was a SAHM I always dressed nice, but comfortably. I don't wear dresses because I don't find them comfortable at all. Typically I wear shorts and a golf shirt in the summer and jeans/khakis, turtleneck and sweater in the winter.

I agree that their shopping expectations are not real for most people. I too would like to see them shopping in a real mall, with everyday stores. I would NEVER spend $200 on a pair of jeans no matter how fashionable--they are JEANS for crying out loud. Also, I think that the hosts need to spend a few days with some toddlers before they start making recommendations for what a mom should buy. That $700 suede blazer just isn't practical with a 2 year old.

I cleaned my whole house yesterday in a casual skirt and top. Being dressed in clothes that aren't sloppy is hardly magazine cover ready, its just dressed.

They throw out your broken in jeans and sweats becuase they are ugly and don't look good on you. Buy a pair of yoga pants in a flattering cut. Just as comfy, not as ugly. Get jeans in a nice cut and wash, they won't throw those out.

Glad Nick is gone, he was a hack. Gave everyone the same soccer mom bob. I really like the new guy.

Sorry, but I'm not wearing my good jeans (or anything else good) to clean. Scrubbing floors, cleaning out the garage, cleaning the bird cage, etc. all are messy jobs that can ruin clothes. Besides, DH thinks I look very cute in my sweats and tshirts or tanks (especially if I wear my hair in braids :)).

It doesn't matter how much the clothes cost, what matters is how it's cut and how it fits you. I'm willing to bet a bunch of those clothes are tailored to the person as well, which is something anyone can do with clothes from Target. You can take those same ideas they present on the show, fitted blouses, pants that don't taper, etc. and find many of those same styles at places like Target. Besides, not all those places are $$. I've seen them going into places like H&M, Filene's Basement, etc. where the clothes are very reasonably priced. And if you're willing to look, you can even find great deals at Bloomingdale's. I was there the other day, and got some amazing deals, including a cashmere sweater, originally priced close to $200 for $20. It might be a season old, but it fits really well and looks great.

So I am sitting here watching them tell a Mom to use a jersey dress as her new fall back outfit. It is what they say she should go about her day in.
:rotfl2:
Um anyone?
Are you Mom's wearing a dress all day?

***whispers*** I do.

I understand it doesn't have to be one extreme or the other, but Target has great finds, Old Navy had great finds - heck I found a REALLY cute cobalt blue tunic to wear with leggings at Wal Mart - for $8!!!

They're not talking about scrubbing your floors, but they are talking about a trip to the grocery store, and it's just as easy to toss on a maxi dress, as it is to throw on jeans and a t shirt - in fact it might be easier.

I dunno - I really like that show. :rolleyes1

I work full time in a stressful job, have two boys (one who is six and extremely energetic, both who have homework every night they may need help with), a puppy, an old dog, and a cockatiel. I also have a largish house that I have to clean. When it's time to stop cleaning and run to the grocery, I do not have the time, nor the inclination to put on a dress. Besides, dresses don't usually work well on my body, since my chest is two sizes bigger than my bottom half.

I make sure I'm clean. And I don't go with cleaning stains or anything on my clothes, but no, I'm not going to take the time to put on nice (as in dressier) clothes to go to the grocery. I'm not putting on a show, I'm going to get supplies for my family. My time is more important than my appearance.

I've never placed that much importance on appearance anyway. Don't get me wrong, I think hygiene is extremely important and it's best to look presentable, but all the hair, make up, latest fashions (as long as they're current within the past three or so years) and trends stuff is just not important to me. Education, family, compassion, etc are.

No, no, no.... I understand what you're saying, and I don't think anyone should be expected to get gussied up for the grocery store. Heck, I'm on of the ones talked about on the CB known to run to the grocery store at 8pm at night, because I forgot milk, and I'm already in my jammies. I'm kind enough to throw a bra on, for the people whom may see me.

But that's not everyday, KWIM? They're talking about / to the women who are 40 years old, still shopping in the junior's section, wearing tight "I kissed your boyfriend" t-shirts and jeans about ready to bust open. OR women wearing clothes so big, you could fit an entire family in them... why grocery shop? Just shop lift it all under your sweat shirt. :lmao: .......Every-Single-Day. KWIM?

I mean, I think most of us can agree 99% of the people they show - needed it, and probably 99% of us know someone like that. That's all.

I am a mom of 5 and I wear dresses 3-4 times a week and the other days skirts or pants. I also do my hair and make up every day.

I honestly can´t see what your clothing style has to do with whether you are a mother or not.

Oh, I agree. I do love the show, too. They get some doozies on there.

I have a question. Do they really expect those ladies on the show to actually wear those clothes while doing dishes? Moping the floor? cutting the grass? I mean they do throw away all their clothes right?

If DH isn't going to sit around in a suit and tie I'm not sitting around in a dress

Well, for one thing, I get up at 5:15 am during the work week. I have to get my kids lunches ready and their breakfasts ready and waiting (dh will send them to school without breakfast, if I don't). That takes up a lot of my time. Then I have to feed the dogs and bird, let the dogs out, clean up any messes the puppy made. That does not leave me much time for hair and make up in the morning, since I have to leave for work at 6:40. I cannot get up any earlier. It's hard enough to wake up at that time. And I don't even have to get my little one up, dressed, and to the bus stop - dh does that.

Plus, dressier clothes and shoes just make it more difficult for me to play with my kids. I worry more about hurting the clothing and dressier shoes can be restrictive.

:rotfl2: I knew I liked you!

Oh and Freya I said Mom because I was just thinking those that are running around in the yard and at the playground- playing ball with the kids. That kind of stuff. No insult to anyone not a mom.

I actually do wear dresses a few times a week, but they aren't anything fancy-sundresses and such. I also wear shorts, though, a Stacy and Clinton no-no.

I remember when the kids were toddlers and I'd see a few moms on the playgrounds done to the nines, I was in a state of awe and wonder (between chasings). Heels, makeup (not the quick, it'll do kind), hair, clothes all were over the top to me in my position. I didn't have the time or energy for it. Nor did I have the time or energy to fuss with keeping it up with messy hands, drool, diaper changes, etc.. It wasn't practical for me.

I was presentable, casual, and comfortable. I could sit or roll around on the ground with the kids, go down the slide, and chase them without giving anything a second thought. That was the way to go for me. And it still is to an extent.

Oh, I wear shorts and capris. Capris = no, no on WNTW, but I like them!

Oh, I didn´t take it as an insult at all to those who don´t have children. I just didn´t see why having kids would change your style. Even though I wear dresses a lot it doesn´t prevent me from playing with my kids in the yard or at the playground. I just wear comfy dresses, and if they´re short I´ll throw on a pair of leggings underneath to stay decent on the swing, lol.

Have to admit I had a pair of jeans on today. First time since my youngest was born in may 08 (if I don´t include my cute denim capris). I took the kids for a hike and some blueberry picking in the mountains and a dress wasn´t the best fit for that ;)

Well, in that case, I take it you're wearing sun-type dresses and sandals or flats? I can see that. It's the heels and dressier outfits that just aren't conducive to parenting, imo.

But, still I don't see why anyone would care whether you're wearing a sundress, shorts, sweats, or jeans, as long as everything is decently covered, isn't covered with gross stains, and doesn't stink.

It doesn't, just like it doesn't have anything to do with weather or not your family or education or compassion or any other of those wonderful qualities. One of the sweetest people I know is always taking care of people, her mother is very ill, her sons are all in wonderful colleges and they are always together as a family. She is ALWAYS dressed beautifully and her hair and makeup done. In fact the joke is at least she could be nasty so we could all hate her, but we can't, she is just as beautiful on the inside as the outside. I just don't understand why some people think that just because you are a mom or a nice person, then you can't look nice. The two are not mutually exclusive. In fact I find the attitude here sometimes to be snobish against people who do seem to care about what they look like.

I've noticed that too. Not necessarily on this thread, but in general when this topic comes up.

And although the argument is often time (which I understand), it take's me 45 minutes from shower to out the door - and that's hair, makeup, clothes, etc.

But everyone's different. I've been doing *this* since 8th grade. I can't imagine otherwise, which I'm sure is the case for the other camp, too.
