We are flying for the first time as a family out of DTW with Delta. We have our four kids that will be with us. Does anyone know what kind of ID they need to fly? (If any?) TIA

No IDs needed for kids unless they are flying as 'lap babies' and then need ID to prove they are under 2. Teens are good to go without ID until they are 18. My dd (17) always flies with her passport..just in case there is any question. Always good to have ID on hand if you have it.

Thanks! All we have is SS and Birth certificates. I will bring them just in case.

Children under 18 require no ID. When you purchase your tickets, airlines now ask for gender and birthdate of passenger.
When we have cruised, we have passports for all -- just in case there was an emergency and we had to fly back into the States. The passport card ID is not valid for air transportation back into the States.

Oh please do not bring both of those together. All you need is to lose the bag those are in, and poof go their identities if found by the wrong person.

You don't need ANYTHING for those ages, but if you must, just bring the certificates. SS cards shouldn't really ever go much of anywhere (DH hasn't even needed to bring his in for first days at new jobs in 20 years). Leave them home.

I didn't think of losing them... Thanks!! It is good to know that we really don't need anything.

Children under 2yo that are lap babies (don't have their own purchased seat) are the ONLY ones under 18yo of age that need ID for domestic flights.

Bringing a birth certificate for any child other than a lap child, is just setting yourself up for possibly losing/misplacing the document.

although you do not NEED identification for childern, if you really would feel better having some form of id, you can get children offical state id's.

the above should link you directly to the page explaining how and what you do to get id's for minor's. They look similar to a drivers license, but is for identification only. they cost 10 bucks each. but are way safer than carrying around Birth certificates or even worse, SS card. :thumbsup2

i'm thinking of getting official state ID for my soon to be 5 year old.

either way, have fun on your trip!

I am just curious why someone would need ID for their child (except to prove they are under 2)? My dd's are 11 and 14. They have flown half a dozen times and car tripped across the US. They have never had a need for ID.

I guess I don't see the need.

Have flown numerous times kids do not need anything. Leave your documents at home where they will not get lost.

Absolutely!! If there is no need, don't bring it. Way too easy to lose.

My dd is 5'10'', at 17. She has been this tall for two years. She has had people give her the 'hairy eyeball' so to speak...so she carries her passport and just shows it. There was one time, at the airline counter that they asked for our IDs. I gave mine, and the employee looked at my dd and said 'And your's??' I started to explain that she was only 15, but dd was already taking her passport out of her bag. She has a passport, she uses it. Never said everyone has to.....that's just what we do.

Some airlines ask for ID if a child is a "lap baby". Some airlines still offer a child or youth fare. The fare is generally more then the deeply discounted fares most of us are able to book. The fare might save a few dollars if you're traveling during a peak period and the alternative is paying full fare.

Passengers taking advantage of an age qualified fare need to prepared to show proof of age.

The TSA doesn't ask for ID from passengers under 18. I agree with the PP, it's probably easier for a child who looks older then 18 to present ID rather then waste time telling the TSA agent ID isn't required. Don't most 16 and 17 year old kids have a drivers license or learners permit.

I am sure I will get there.... my DD(14) is 5'8" and looks older. Once you get close to 18, it doesn't hurt to carry ID. We will have our DD carry her DL once she has one.

If a child is younger than that, especially under 10, I don't see any need for any form of official ID.

My dd just got her permit last spring. And will most likely have her license late this spring. It's just easier to bring the passport since she has had it for a few years now...since she was 13.

Yep, you'll get there. It's really scary when you have to look 'up' to look your children in the eye!!!

Technically no ID is needed for under the age of 18 (although I have been questioned before), but if you want to bring something (just in case) bring a COPY of the birth cert. I wouldn't bring the original.

As previously mentioned you don't NEED anything.

My daughter 10 has a state id card though and we always bring that just in case any question is asked at any point in traveling from anyone. It's easy to carry with my driver's license.

My daughter also has a last name different from mine and though we've never been questioned, I've always thought it's almost scary how easy it is to buy a ticket for a minor and put them on a plane with out proving who they are and that you are their parent. I carry a copy of her birth certificate in case there's ever any question as to my being her mother...

I am 6' and DW is 5'11", so I don't think we'll be looking up to either DD, but you never know... maybe we'll have a 6'5" basketball player by the time they are done growing!

That is one of the reasons I asked the question in the first place. I have one DD that has a different last name than me or my other kids dad.

But I think that just bringing a copy of the Birth Certificate is a good idea. I think I will do that. Then I won't have to worry about losing something. That would be so scary.
