When I lived in New York City, there was always this older woman, obviously mentally ill, on the D train (I'd ride uptown from 42nd St to Columbus Circle, and she was always on my afternoon commute), who would walk the length of the cars, looking for handouts and remarking on the other passengers. They were observations, but sometimes hurtful: "you need to lose weight", "you need a haircut", "you look like you're illiterate", "you should be home with your family" etc. Just random observations about the other passengers.

In typical NYC fashion, most would ignore her, some would give her a buck or some coins.

Just wondering what mental disorder she may have suffered from?

Not sure but just from reading a post on the Russel Brand/Katy Perry thread, I would say there are some on the disboards that suffer from it also.

People with Aspergers depending on the place on the spectrum would be apt to say what's on their minds without any kind of filter.

I think this is more acurate than tourettes. Tourettes is more of like....IDK how to expalin it..An uncontrollable tick

I agree also, that it probably isn't Tourette's. From what I know of Tourette's, (admittedly little), one will blurt out a random word, phrase or sound. This woman would size someone up and make a sometimes accurate statement about them.

this is what I thought. My son is an "perger" kid and whew some of the things that came out of his mouth when he was younger. Oy Vey!

She could also have suffered from dementia. When my mother's dementia first hit, it was amazing the things she felt free to say about other people, including complete strangers. A lot of it was really hurtful. I don't thing my husband has forgiven her for what she had to 'share' about him, and she has been dead for about three years.

Could be lots of things. She might just be plain rude LOL!! After a stroke, DGM said the most random, crazy, hurtful things to the people she loved that she never, EVER would have said before it. She didn't have dementia, but something during the stroke made her that way.

DS14 has Tourettes Syndrome, I doubt it was that. TS is generally portrayed on TV as people cursing uncontrolably, when in fact, the majority of TS sufferers have 95% motor tics, not verbal ones. Techincally, to be diagnosed with TS you have to exhibit both verbal & motor tics, but I have never met a TS patient in person that shouted out curse words.

Are you thinking of Coprolalia: The involuntary uttering of swear words or other socially inappropriate or derogatory remarks?

....:scratchin I think it's called Unabashed Honesty....careful: it CAN be fatal. popcorn::

Very true. My Aspie son, on the other hand, would whisper these things to me instead of saying them to the person because he doesn't like to talk to strangers!

Or depression - both my mother and my aunt, after losing their spouses, became very depressed. They also started making very mean comments about everyone else in the family. Once my mom took care of her depression, she got much better. I can tell when she has gone off her meds, watch out world!

True dat!:thumbsup2 Oh, I used to die a thousand deaths with what my DS would say to complete strangers.

Anything from brain injury to schizophrenia comes to mind. Also it may just be her "act" and that is how she gets money.
