What Frugal Action Did You Take Today!?

One last tip for saving money at breakfast: use powdered milk either in part or whole to save money. When powdered milk is cold, you hardly notice a difference, especially on cereal or in recipes. If you think your family will be skeptical about drinking powdered milk, mix it with regular milk. I've served powdered milk with cereal to extended family, and when asked about it later, they never noticed the difference.

Personally I think powdered milk is expensive and I can't stand the taste. Once a month(usually) my local grocery store has milk on sale for around $1 a 1/2 gal. I'll stock up then and freeze what I need for the month. Works out better for me this way.

BTW, Thanks for all the oatmeal tips. I'm gonna have to try some.

Your idea sounds better than the article. II do like the idea of 'instant oatmeal packets though. I don't like the sugar contents or price of pre packaged products!!

Wait...What? Whoa! Do you have pictures? How did you make them? I'd love to do this. I'm so sick of serving up cold cereal but my kids are equally sick of the regular frozen pancakes. This could add some pizzaz to our mundane mornings!

I have a cheap Mickey Mouse waffle iron that I bought about 5 or 6 years ago. My waffles usually come out more like pancakes, but they came out as waffles this time. Either way the kids love them.

Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups water, warm
- 1 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 pkg.)
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
- 4 cups flour
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons baking soda

Directions:
1 Dissolve powdered sugar in warm water in med bowl. Sprinkle yeast on water/sugar mixture, stir slightly. Put aside for 10 minutes, allow yeast to bloom.
2 Add salt and flour to yeast mixture and knead dough until smooth and elastic(3-5 minutes).
3 Cover bowl loosely with a cotton towel and let dough rise at least 1/2 hour.
4 Prepare baking soda bath. Bring 2 cups of water and baking soda just to a simmer. Be certain to stir often.
5 After dough has risen, pinch off bits of dough and roll into a long rope (about 1/2 inch or less thick) and shape.
6 Using a slotted spoon, dip pretzel into baking soda bath for 20-30 seconds. Allow excess water to drip off then place on greased baking sheet.
7 Bake in oven at 450 degrees for 5 minutes, rotate pan, bake for about 5 minutes more or until golden,

Toppings
-Melt 2-4 tbsps butter
-brush butter on pretzels
-sprinkle with coarse salt
or
-Melt a stick of butter in bowl
-in another bowl, make a sugar/cinnamon mixture(1/2 c sugar, 2 tsps cinamon)
-dip pretzel in butter, coating both sides generously
-then dip into cinnamon mixture

Thank you! DD and I just made these this morning and they are delicious! I think they will freeze really well for quick out-the-door snacks, too.

You're welcome. I thought about freezing them too. Would you freeze them already cooked? Let me know how it works for you.

I brownbagged my lunch and will eat at home tonight. I also brought my soda to work instead of going to the coke machine.

I bet if I wanted to freeze some, I would have to make a double batch.;)

I can't wait until Friday! I refuse to go to the store and not get a 'no buy' day, for yeast, although I am VERY tempted!:headache:

I put a batch of taco soup in the crockpot this morning. Now I won't have to listen to my DD ask me what's for dinner when I get home. AND I stole some fruit/nut mix from my colleague's desk drawer for lunch. Doesn't get any more frugal than that! :upsidedow

I wanted to order one of those "dog-bone" pillows off Amazon for our overseas trip this summer. Instead, I went down to my sewing room and fiddled around until I came up with a similar pattern and made one myself, using fabric scraps and stuffing I already had. Saved myself $10, and since there will be 4 of us traveling, I can make a few more for the rest of the family and not spend anything out of pocket. And if they get lost, no big deal, since they were pretty much free to start with!

Yes, I'd freeze them precooked, so they are like those Super Pretzels you can buy. I think if I freeze them on a cookie sheet until they are hard, and then bag them, they won't stick together in the freezer. That's how I freeze waffles and pancakes and they always come out fine.

That's how we also do French toast and pancakes. We never have leftover waffles. (But wish we did ;-) )

Today, I went through a bin I have had around awhile. Found envelopes, which I was going to buy Friday and some colored paper, for the boys. Also found a card I kept from my Mom,who passed away three years ago.:goodvibes

Used a coupon at Bath & Body Works for a free item with any purchase. Spent only $6 for two future gift items.

Saved $2 on a loaf of cheese bread, OK, the bread was still $4 but it is amazing and I only buy it on sale and then I freeze it.

I haven't been feeling well latley and have been sipping 7 up a lot. Today I had to run a few errands so I took a plastic cup of soda from a two liter in the car with me rather than stopping and picking up something from a fast food place or convenience store. Also I frequently check out freecycle although I've never used it used it before. Today someone was offering a 20 in TV to whomever was willing to pick it up. I had planned to buy one around that size for my girls room but thanks to freecycle it only cost me gas money for the 3 mi. roundtrip drive.

I saved the number 8 candle from my DMILs birthday cake today for my DS and DD future bday. I tried to save the number 4 candle but it got tossed in the trash before I could grab it.

I bought DD and DS 3 packs of Valentines Cards for future use at Target today for 90% off. 20 cents each for a box of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Tinkerbell and Toy Story cards. I just hope MM is still around/on when DD starts school in 3years :lmao:

I wanted to order some transfer paper for making tshirts for our disney trip. I used $10 that I got cashback ebates purchases and it ended up only costing $15 instead of $25.

Bought a gallon of milk and a toothpaste for 71 cents thanks to coupons!!!

For couple weeks have opened house and refuse to turn on AC. Probably helps that I have hypothyroidism and can't stand the be cold right now. But hey its saving us some money, right?

I got a call at work last night that my grandson tripped and fell and had a head wound. They took him in and got him superglued.;). Literally, even though it sounds funny.

My grandson was VERY good and had to tell me all the details this morning! I wanted to give him a get well gift. I have been looking for bargains for Christmas. I had a dragon egg toy, originally $10, that I got for $2! Grandma, happy, Grandson happy! Win/win in my book!;)

My grandsons are three and five and this was their first urgent care/er type visit ever!:goodvibes
