DH and I were talking today about "tacky" Christmas decorations.

We both like the classic look, white lights (but not icicle on the roofs), either the white wooden reindeer, or the light up wire/light ones.

We personally think the most well, interesting things iare the light up plastic things that are about 3 feet high.. some are snowmen, some are Santas, and well, I have a problem witht he light up plastic Mary, Joseph, Jesus, and the wise wen... they look so well, unnatural...

Another doozy we saw today was an 8 foot inflatable snowman... you need to have a really big yard to pull it off, and then it still looks like it belongs at a car sales grand opening sale..or on top of a business...

As long as they weren't left up from the past Christmas, then I can handle about anything. :D

Tis the season to be tacky, Fa, La, La, La La,... La, La, La, La!! :o

Oh, we have neighbors that are the king and queen of tacky decorations. :teeth:

Plastic reindeer, cardboard Santas, you name it...they put it up. :)

But they are NICE people so we just grin and bear it when we drive by their holiday extravaganza. The fun thing is they ALWAYS have tacky decorations up, for EVERY holiday  so I guess we're just used to it. :)

Michelle, we have a house near our neighborhood that does that....they go all out for EVERY holiday!

Actually, I can't think of anything that's tacky....I like any and all Christmas decorations! :) :)

I am looking out the window at our neighbor's house.... and getting dizzy. They have white icicle lights, but one side of the front of the house is racing, one side is on, and the middle is blinking. Somebody messed up the settings big time!

I don't care for the plastic figures, and my dogs HATE them. I don't mind the big blow up figures, though. I wanted the Mickey in the catalog, but did not order it. :(

Other than that, I love all of the lights. They are much more beautiful than all of the crazy decorations, IMO.

Tacky to me is having a snowman or wooden soldier next to the nativity scene for an outdoor display:eek:

One family in my neighborhood has multi-colored icicle lights. We don't get too many icicles in this part of the country, but I'm pretty sure they aren't red and green.

There's another family that strings white lights on all of the bushes and trees in the front yard, which is fine, but they don't use plain extension cords to connect the lights between the different plants. Instead, there are strings of white lights connecting trees and bushes. One year they had white lights strung between the high points of two large bushes, instead of along the ground. It looked like a clothes line.

I love Christmas decorations in general, but some people need to step back and check out the total effect.

Driving home from my parent's house last night, DS and I saw one yard with the following:

1 8ft high inflatable Santa
1 8ft high inflatable Homer Simpson (dressed as Santa)
1 8ft high inflatable Snowman
1 8ft high inflatable Gingerbread Man

Various and sundry other decorations.

Verrrrryyyy Festive

Those inflatable snowmen are just a little over the top! Of course my dh wanted one:rolleyes: . I threatened to move out!;)

I am going to get flamed for this one, but I got to respond.
I hate the all white lights. They look like a wedding.
I hate the all blue lights. They look like a funeral.

Obvously, I like the multi colored lights more festive for the holidays.

One house on one side of me has their whole front yard covered in all white: the icicle lights on the roof, white reindeir, white bushes and even a white snowman oh yes a white wire chistmas tree too. Oh I want to tell them add some color.

The other side of me has solid blue lights on their roof and nothing else.

Yes my house has multi colored lights on the roof, and windows and green and red outlining the door.

It just drives me crazy. Oh yes Our local hospital which is pretty good size strings all white lights on all their roofs, and trees.
All I ask for is add color.

Hey! We love our multi-colored icicle lights! We just put them up today! :D :D

We are in Iowa, and you never know what the weather is going to do here! :p

We've had most of those tacky decorations in my yard and on my roof.
We've sort of had a "Tim the Tool Man" contest with the neighbors across the street.

Not this year.

Umm, no. Not all year around. Barely up two weeks.

These are funny!!
I just 'have' to reply to this one...
Last year, my neighbours, (who btw have 'no money' and got about every xmas hamper thing going) put up the 8 ft inflatable santa thing - then they thought he looked lonely and got the snowman....well the funny thing is....we lived (we just moved) in small condos!!! So you have to picture this teeny tiny condo with a small carport - and on the carport are these 2 giant things - and also - we lived in the windiest city in British Columbia! So every day it was hilarious to watch these things start coming loose and flying around in the sky - barely held on by one rope that managed to stay attached. It was quite amusing and entertaining!!! They also have this very very bratty kid who decided she would climb out her bedroom window and onto the carport roof - and un-tie santa and push him off the carport - now THAT was funny!!! So it is windy - and Santa is un-tied and the father is running down the street in his jammies chasing this giant santa that is deflated and blowing away....
They also had just about every possible smaller plastic light up decoration all over the small 15x15 foot lawn - we didn't even need to put our outdoor light on when we went out in December...their house lit up the neighborhood!
anyway I digress...hope this post made sense...I am so tired!

Kaos -- ROFLROFL!!! I can just picture the guy in his jammies chasing the runaway santa!!

So far this year, we've just got the tree. I'd like to put up one string of multi-colored lights in the window (because that's what we have), but I haven't figured out how you attach lights to the inside of a window without totally messing up the window :o What I'd really like to do is get one or two of those white light reindeer and put them in our yard, and add that Jack Frost head or whatever it is -- they used to have them at Disneyland. It was an old man's head blowing wintery-wind. I don't know why, but I really like that thing. I want one in my flower bed. Can't afford anything beyond what we currently have, though.

there's this one house that has a 8 foot tall blow uo snowman and I want to scream, that belongs in a car lot!! But the Homer as Santa would be a riot to see

Now 24/7 Christmas music is a different story

For me, metallic garland is the grand poopalina of tackiness! Also to consider in the tack factor are those that can't decide between white lights and multi and just decide to throw it all together. Very gauche IMHO. :teeth:
