Here's a scenario, if my commuting and food costs doubled, I would eliminate unnecessary spending such as vacations and movies out, etc. Oil is not finite in our lifetime (or several actually). The problem is environmentalists in this country have a stranglehold on drilling and exploration. That's besides the point. Most people (not all, don't flame me) don't drive 50 miles to work and have plenty in their grocery bill that aren't necessities. No one really needs soda or candy and chips). Average commutes are closer to 25-40 minutes, both of which are a lot less than 50 miles. Also, the longest commutes tend to be in the higher income and higher employment rate areas.
And, I didn't buy my SUV with cash, I financed it

But, it is paid for an entire year early, so who cares that you paid cash? And we have a very good income. I'm so tired of people on these boards acting like the only possible way to live is debt free. It's nice, but not everyone does and not everyone who doesn't is in financial trouble.
These threads tend to deteriorate pretty quickly and veer off course so fast whenever the fact that some people have more money than others comes up. It's life.
