What do you say when people brag about how much they spend?

Have not read all the posts....but we are savers and spluger people. But, we only splurge on special things. But, I do enjoy bragging about $$$ I have saved on something and deals I have gotten. I guess for me it's because I'm so proud of myself whenI get a good deal.

I think that bragging is unattractive regardless of who is doing it. That applies to both those who have to tell you how much they spend and the frugal people who take smug satisfaction in telling the world about what tightwads they are.

They both get the same response: Much happiness with your <insert item purchased here>.

I agree

If you tell others about how much something cost, how much money you make, how much money you save and then call others foolish who don't buy the way you do or how much you save of your income you are bragging.

This thread has to be the weirdest I have read. Why do people that don't make a lot of money assume that people that buy epensive things are wasting money or buing it on credit.:confused3There are actually wealthy people in this world that can afford to spend. Why would you want to save everything. I have never seen a hearst with a uhaul full of money behind it.

Actually I have. My uncles funeral procession, all the cars were driving slow of course, and a Brinks armoured truck ended up in the drive up the highway to the cemetary. :goodvibes However, to clarify, the uncle was a man without two cents to rub together. I guess that's why the armoured truck didn't follow us into the cemetary.

I purchased my SUV to haul my 3 kids around and all of their sports stuff. I also need it for when we travel, 5 people take a lot of stuff. But then again, I don't owe you an explanation. I love mine, yes it takes more gas, but oh well. I can afford it, and I would buy another one right now if mine suddenly broke down.

Again, just how do you know that they won't be able to afford to drive to work.
I have never seen so much nastiness and envy in all my life.

I bought my car brand new with cash, so no I am not envious of people with money. I could have bought an SUV with my money, but instead I chose something that gets better gas millage and has low emissions. Why is it that when a person doesn't like 'blank' that must mean that they are envious of 'blank' or whomever has 'blank'? How about somebody just not agreeing with a choice that another person has made. I would hope that my opinion doesn't matter to you since I am a total stranger on the internet.

Here is a scenerio. A person lives way out in the suburbs and drives 50 miles each way to work each day in a large car. Gas goes up to let's say $8.00 a gallon and every single thing that person buys also goes up in price because the cost to ship things goes up as gas prices go up. That person now has to pay twice as much for gas and food. If that is the case then how are they going to be able to afford to drive to work or even to a store since the nearest one is miles away? This is the kind of thing I am talking about. Gas is a finite source of energy.

Your opinion crossed the line of just being opinion, when you stated as a fact that people would not be able to afford gas. When you use words like sheepish, you come of as totally envious of self righteous. YOu don't know what people can and can't afford.

YOur opinion doesn't matter to me, don't flatter yourself, you stated as fact that people wouldn't be able to afford to drive to work. Can you prove that? I don't think so.

And I got 20 points because I was supposedly "rude" to this person!

I dont like to here when people say...oh I spent this and I spent that..and this costs me this. Theres the "I just got a great deal and want to share it because Im so happy" and then there are the "I feel I need to tell you how much I spend because I feel I have more money than you or I want to try to make you jealous" (had a friend like that she drove me nuts---not friends anymore...not for that reason, but happy not to hear her crap anymore) I dont care what you make, how much you have....it matters what kind of person you are...thats what I tell me kids too. I love looking for deals..I wont kill myself for them but I love to save money...there will ALWAYS be someone who has more than you and less than you....you need to be thankful for what you have

I gave you links to back up my statement. I guess you didn't read them?:scared1:

I have read through this crazy thread and then just went back a page or two to see if my theory was right. Seems like the majority of bickering is from newbies??? Maybe they have yet to get some online courtesy pixie dust from visiting wdw?? Just a theory.

No I didn't read them, and I won't. No link that you provide will make me change my mind about anything. You have your opinion, I have mine. Trouble is, you think your opinion is right and is fact. Good for you.

Have a nice day.

This could be true.

The sun is shining and it's a beautiful day so I will! :)

Here's a scenario, if my commuting and food costs doubled, I would eliminate unnecessary spending such as vacations and movies out, etc. Oil is not finite in our lifetime (or several actually). The problem is environmentalists in this country have a stranglehold on drilling and exploration. That's besides the point. Most people (not all, don't flame me) don't drive 50 miles to work and have plenty in their grocery bill that aren't necessities. No one really needs soda or candy and chips). Average commutes are closer to 25-40 minutes, both of which are a lot less than 50 miles. Also, the longest commutes tend to be in the higher income and higher employment rate areas.

And, I didn't buy my SUV with cash, I financed it :scared1: But, it is paid for an entire year early, so who cares that you paid cash? And we have a very good income. I'm so tired of people on these boards acting like the only possible way to live is debt free. It's nice, but not everyone does and not everyone who doesn't is in financial trouble.

These threads tend to deteriorate pretty quickly and veer off course so fast whenever the fact that some people have more money than others comes up. It's life.

There are a lot of variables at work but year by year there has been a growing demand for oil. This demand is coming mainly from India and China which are both wanting to emulate how the West operates financially and socially. They all want cars like we want cars, but there both have huge populations and little to no environmental regulations. There hasn't been a major oil field discovered in a while and the oil that is left to drill is in small pockets which won't support the growing demand. In fact it would probably cost more to drill some of them than what the oil produced will earn. Those oil fields in Alaska that some people want drilled wouldn't support the gas habits of this country for even a year. We all have to learn how to conserve gas and make smarter purchasing decisions.
