What do you miss that we "don't" have anymore?

Riding in the back of pick-up trucks :scared1:

We always rode in the back of the trucks. I remember bringing lunch to the guys in the grain fields (MN), looking for asperagus

Baked goods and caramel apples in our halloween trick or treating haul

My mom used to make popcorn balls to give out, I was born in '72 so it doesn't seem so long ago  can't do that now

I so could have wrote this post! (except for the year ;)
And yes, I loved the neighbor lady who gave fresh caramel apples for Halloween.

We would drive to Grandma's house, about 40 minutes away, and my five brothers & sisters and I would ride in the back of the pick-up. On the way home, for a special treat, we'd stop at DQ and we'd each get a small vanilla cone. If we asked for anything more, we'd get nothing, so we were thrilled with the cone!! We'd have to eat it quickly or the wind would blow the dripping ice cream all over.

Sometimes I think my kids are so spoiled but other times I think they are missing out on so much!

I loved Zodys, Gemco, and does any one remember pup n taco? Oh boy all the old memories. Jo
I remember Gemco! Recently a friend of mine went to visit her 95 yr. old grandmother and Grandmother sent her home with some decorative figurines. The Gemco sticker was still on the bottom! The last Gemco I was in was in San Jose, CA. over off of Camden Ave (I think) and that was about 25 years ago.

We still have a drive-in here. We took a couple of large pickups, a bunch of air mattresses, DD and a bunch of friends for DD's B-day this summer. The girls loved it! We took snacks and a buffet line, it was so much fun.

Isn't it funny how so many of our memories revolve around food and food establishments. No wonder I am fat! :lmao:

How about Pizza and Pipes?

Hawaiian Tropic Tanning OIL! We sat out in the sun and got crispy!

Noxema and Sea Breeze for skin care

Mom or Dad always making sure we had a dime when we left the house, in case we needed to call. We never ever left without a dime!

Miss the wish books, too. Shopping online is convenient, but it's nothing like when we were kids, pulling that big catalog onto our laps and going at it with a marker, circling all the things we dreamed about.

:)

Did every kid do this?? Wow. My cousin Rachel (she's 3 years younger than I am) and I would do the same thing. Every time the JCP or the Sears catalog came out, we would sit on the couch together and start at the beginning. We took turns as to who could pick out one item on the open page. We would always circle what we wanted. I remember us laughing at the men in the tighty whities. :rotfl: That is honestly one of my favorite memories, going thru the catalogs. Oh, and when the JCP Christmas catalog came out, that was a real cause for celebration.

I still love Seabreeze!

My parents made sure I always had a quarter for that same reason.

Ah ha! Remembered two other things:

Friendly Homes Toy Parties

Jewel Tea man

:goodvibes

Wow, this is a great thread. I'm remembering things I haven't thought of in years.

This was probably regional, but when video games first came out, there was a show called Pow. And it had a video screen and played a game called Pow. You called in and played against the host. Everytime you wanted to shoot, you yelled Pow! :rotfl:

PM Magazine (that may be regional, as well).
That's Impossible.
Oh and there was a show I LOVED and they tested consumer products. Please tell me someone remembers it. It was on in the early 80's.
Remember when generic stuff at the grocery store was actually decorated generically? Just white boxes with black lettering PAPER TOWELS or ALUMINUM FOIL.

Just remembered, every Saturday morning, I sat with my radio that had a tape recorder on it and listened to Casey Kasems American Top 40 and I would record my favorite songs. Remember the Long Distance Dedications? LOL

I miss...

NOT seeing commercials before a movie.

Mystery Science Theatre 3000.

Thinking it is safe for children to play outside.

Calvin & Hobbes

Looney Tunes

dh went last month and will be going again this month to the mystery science theatre 3000 special theatre releases. i could'nt stand the show, but he's loving seeing them on the big screen (last month they did 'reefer madness', and i think this month it's 'house of wax').

Hair curling products that ranged from:

bobby pins (for pin curls)
sponge curlers
torture-you-all-night brush curlers (some as big as a JUICE can)
hot rollers - with those awful pins that jabbed in your head

Then the "home perms" - very, very big with my mom and her friends

Prell shampoo (still around)

"Standing" Tuesday appointment at the "beauty parlor" - then until the following week, you had to sleep with your hair wrapped up in a net - :rotfl:

OH, I LOVE MST3K! There are quite a few of them on Netflix for instant watching. But my favorite one isn't, and my favorite one isn't even science fiction. It's "Mitchell" starring Joe Don Baker. I have it on VHS but no way to play it. I guess I should break down and buy the DVD. Any MST3K who haven't seen this, I promise you will love it!

i remember jewel tea, i also remember the watkins man (they still make the best vanilla to this day) and when the avon lady went door to door (and we LOVED the miniature lipstick samples mom gave us).

anyone remember when a truck would come to the neighborhood and take photographs of kids? they would announce a date, then your mom would take you there and inside was a small photo studio.

i still have one of me and my brother with a small one year calendar printed on the bottom.

we had a kresge's and a woolworths "in town", but we kids liked thrifty store the best-they sold ice cream cones where 1 scoop was a nickle, 2 was a dime, and 3 for 15 cents:cool1: years later, that same kind of mindset made an italian restaurant in the bay area popular with their well drinks going for a single at $1, a double for $2 and a triple for $3:eek::sick::rotfl:

i remember it taking HOURS upon HOURS when my mom went to the salon to get a perm done. the stuff had to sit so much longer and there were so many more rinsings.

Not that many years ago, my sister would occasionally host a "Watkins" party in her house.. I wonder if they still do that - or if everything is online now? Their spices were expensive, but good..:goodvibes

How about "Ovaltine"? Do they still sell that anymore?

Oh - and "Easter bonnets".. The fancier, the better (but I hated them - LOL..)

watkins is like amway-you can buy it from a distributor or on-line (and we've found that their dip mix is ideal to put into a plain bread mix for a bread machine, just dry-we've made a variety of flavored breads with it).

yup-ovaltine is still around. we see the commercials regulary "hey mom, more ovaltine please".

do you remember bosco? it's still around but i have'nt seen it in years.

Mentioning the home toy party brought back another memory--anyone remember Dutchmaid Clothing? The items were sold at home parties & the quality was outstanding! Beeline was another line of home party clothing; more "hip" I suppose but their quality wasn't as nice. This was in the mid 1960-1970 timeframe & maybe it was just a "midwest" thing.

Tupperware was sold that way too & you can still find parties every now & then.

The Kresge lunch counter I worked at had ice cream cones. I'd forgotten that. I remember their chili dogs & chili burgers. The person working the lunch counter had relish & minced onion but the customers put their own ketchup/mustard on their sandwich. The Saturdays there was a home U of Wisconsin football game were the most exciting!

Thought of a few more ~

Hip hugger bell bottom pants - hated those things!!!!! :lmao:

Sock hops - during high school on rainny days we'd have dances in the gym, I always danced with my best girl friend buddy.
Believe it or not, back in the day it was cool for girls to walk along holding hands and dance together. Ahhhh, we were so naive and innocent.

Oh - our parents could send a note that we were allowed to smoke at recess at the smoker's corner.
Altho I've never smoked, it was considered the cool corner or is that kewl? :rotfl2:

DH said in the 50'ies it was cool to cut your belt loops off your tight Levis and wear jeans rolled up.

Yes, C.Ann, our kids were raised on Ovaltine and we can still buy it! :thumbsup2

Ponds cold cream - my good friend used it all her life, lived to be 80yo and looked 60!!! :wizard:

Anyone remember black and white TV?!?! :woohoo:

I can remember buying our DS Sears toughskin jeans - doubled layered at the knees!?!? :cool1:

Oh yes - my mom used Ponds cold cream.. I also remember using Noxcema myself.. The smell could knock you over.. LOL..

Black and white tv? I never had a colored tv until 1969 !!!

And oh how I loved my 8-track player!! :lovestruc

And how about that first Polaroid instant camera - photo popped right out! Took some really nice photos too..:goodvibes

How about a bathrobe that you can tie closed - rather than "zip"? Getting harder and harder to find..

Clogs, anyone? I could never wear them - I fell off/out of them..:rotfl::rotfl:

Some things I miss:

Sugarplum flavored LipSmackers

HR PufnStuff

Andy Williams Christmas Specials

Lemon-UP shampoo

Walter Cronkite anchoring the News

Local AM Top-40 Radio Stations with an actual, live DJ who would
take requests and make dedications.

When holding hands during the Slow-skate at the skating rink was a big deal.
