What do you miss that we "don't" have anymore?

Sunday night TV - The Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. We looked forward to it all week.

Saturday morning cartoons

Me too!! We went to my grandparents every Sunday for dinner. Every Sunday my Grandmother made roast chicken and my Dad swore if she made it again we were never coming back. All the grandkids would pile onto their bed and watch tv on the smallest set God ever created. It was a blast.

And I have been known to give the, "Do you know how lucky you are to have cartoons EVERY day?" lecture to my daughter. And cartoons today do kinda suck.

I miss being a kid.

I miss not worrying about germs. Maybe it's because I was a kid but I miss being oblivious!

I miss watching good family TV.

I miss toys that required an imagination. My dolls didn't poop or talk. I had to pretend. And they didn't require access to the internet to make them work!


By the way, we have A&W but not drive-thru and we do have an ice cream truck. In hick-town!!

More recently:
My Diet Vanilla Coke and FF Jalapeno Pringles. Why oh why, do these companies get me addicted to their product, then pull them???? (Can you tell I diet. A. Lot.!!! )

I remember Burger Chef, but don't remember what it tasted like, but I freaking LOVED diet vanilla coke!! When I heard they were stopping production I bought every case I could find and was so sad when it ran out! Thankfully we have an awesome gas station in Dallas that has fountain drinks where you can add vanilla....so yummy!!

Amen, I truly miss when children could walk to neighbor's in same community, school or mall, without worrying about what could happen.

Honestly that's just romantic thinking....because bad things did happen back in the day. There have always been murderers, sex offenders and creepy people wandering around.

YEs!! Just the other day I was thinking about the scrumptious, creamy, oh-so-yummy CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER. I think Jif made them with flavors a few years ago?? I don't know who made it but I could eat a whole jar in about 2 days.

C Ann, aren't you glad you started this thread and now know where o find and A&W (we had them in Michigan) and drive in (oddly both in Michigan and New Hampshire we lived near still functioning drive ins).

Let's see, I miss:

Astro pop lollipops

I remember Astro pop lollipops....they were my favorite. I literally pulled a filling out of my tooth with one...after that, my mom forbid me to have them. I also remember another candy very similiar to the astro pop, but it was flat stick about 3inches long. It came in flavors like sour apple, cherry, and grape. We used to dip them in our Sprite or 7-Up. Then there was Gold Nugget gum...I loved the bag it came in....I still see it on occassion in speciality shops.

We still have an ice cream truck around here.

Winns - my grandmother worked at a Winns in the fabric department. I loved that store as a child. We would go in, buy an icee, look at the trinket toy isle, and buy fabric. Probably would hate it now though...

I also remember Shakey's Pizza...we had a Church's Chicken too where you could watch them batter and fry the chcken.

I also remember when Sears had a candy counter. My mom and I would get chocolate turtles or chocolate covered peanuts and shop.

We have a drive in about 4 miles from my house. Open all week during the summer and Thursday through Sunday during the school year.

I miss Night Trax on Friday and Saturday nights and Dragnet (even though it was just reruns for me).

Oh, and DGS1 just had his first ice cream truck ice cream on Friday.

I miss the corner record store. As a matter of fact I missed the "corner" store. I hate the big "walmart" box retailers. No wonder people hate shopping.

I miss the stores being closed on Sundays. When I was growing up Sundays were lazy days. Now since every thing is open some times I go back to work on Monday and it seems like I never even had a day off because I spend my weekends running around.

i remember that around Christmas the stores in our small town would stay open at night! that's right, only during the few weeks before Christmas. The stores were decorated and the town's Christmas lights were on. This happened right after the Christmas parade. It seems so odd now because everythings open all the time.

i also miss saturdays and watching cartoons and the monkees. yes, i'm old.

Record Stores - Used to spend hours in there looking at the albums, the cover. Rushing there when they would come out and simply going home and listening to the WHOLE album!

For those that mention good ol family TV.. Aint that the truth? I find it so hard to find TV shows that we can all sit down and enjoy at 8pm! These new Disney shows where I can't tell one brunette young girl from another.... ugh! Demi, Selena, Carly...... LOL!

It took a while to get used to, and I hate it when we have just returned from vacation on Saturday night and cannot grocery shop, but on the whole I really like it. It is also much frowned upon to run the vacuum, lawn mower, etc--so not much housework to do either and I have yet to see any kids' (or adults') activity run on a Sunday either (like Scouts, karate, ballet, etc). Museums and restaurants and things like that are open--makes for nice family days.

Oh, what a FUN thread!! Makes me feel so very old though.

Love Shakey's pizza; I think there's a restaurant in Janesville WI. Makes me want to call a friend & go on down there!

Years ago, when my kids were little (in the late 70's), on Madison WI's "square", there was a restaurant kiddie-corner from Kresge's that you called your order in on a phone. I can't remember the name of it though. The kids loved to call in the orders.

I miss Kresge's too; that's where I got my first job (the lunch counter up front) in high school & learned there to count change back to customers. What fun I had!

I miss Rennebohm Drug Store soda fountain/restaurant sections. Those slowly went away after Walgreen bought them out.

I think Verona WI still has a stand-alone A&W but it's been a long time since I've been there.

I miss Dunkin Donuts; rumor had it they were going to come back to Madison but so far nothing.

I miss being able to burn leaves in the gutters in the fall. The smell of burning leaves means "fall" is really here.

I miss summer spraying for mosquitos but I guess they can't do that anymore.

I agree with other people about todays kids missing the freedom our kids had; being able to be outside & not worrying as much. Go out right after breakfast & come in when the street lights come on.

It really is nice. Some of the bakeries are open until about 11:00. I like that because we have rapidly developed an addiction to fresh bread--so we always make sure someone gets up and out and over to the bakery. If we have an outing planned (museum, zoo, etc) then I let the kids pick a pastry to go with traditional German rolls, meats and cheeses for breakfast. If we have no where to be then we take out time and make crepes. I do think life is more relaxing when you can count on one true day off from obligations.

I miss the fancy ladies' lounges they used to have in the upscale department stores. They were in the anteroom of the bathrooms.

My aunt was "high-falutin'" to quote my mother, and she would take us to Bullucks and Saks and such and the lounges were just divine. One of them had an attendant.

I thought it would be so cool to be on of those ladies who touched up her make-up in the lounge during a shopping trip. Just yesterday, I was at Macy's and the restroom was missing toilet paper and the door handle was broken.

Riding in the back of pick-up trucks

We always rode in the back of the trucks. I remember bringing lunch to the guys in the grain fields (MN), looking for asperagus

I miss being excited about new episodes of Little House on the Prarie. .

One of the best family shows ever!! I have them on VHS tapes and DVD tapes and still watch them over and over and over..

Lack of imagination in children not only saddens me, it worries me as well..

I wish soooooooo bad that someone still had one of those huge Christmas catalogs.. They were so much fun!!

Also miss having a vegetable garden.. Can't even get weeds to grow up here - LOL..
