What do you miss that we "don't" have anymore?

I may be young but I miss saturday morning cartoons as well. I used to love taking my cereal out into the living room on sat. mornings and watching cartoons with my dad. I tried watching them a few weeks ago when my cousin stayed over and they are awful now.

I miss the Old Disney channel when they played Mickey Mouse cartoons and the old tv shows like the Mickey Mouse Club and Spin and Marty.

Ok, so I was really young, maybe 4 or 5, so I may have this totally wrong...does anyone remember A&W having telephones at the table where you picked up when you were ready to order and you actually placed your order on the phone?

Sunday drives
Ice Cream trucks
moblie libraries

I live in Southeastern part of VA. We do still have a book mobile and the ice cream truck-I live on a cul de sac and they don't come down this street. One time, I had to go track down the ice cream truck. DD and I got ice cream, but I got this wierd vibe from the guy, so we haven't tracked him down anymore.

Another one who misses Saturday morning cartoons and Woolworths. Does anyone remember the version of the Mickey Mouse Club they had in the 70s? I miss being excited about new episodes of Little House on the Prarie. And I miss having a 45 record player.

Sunday night TV - The Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom.

"Jim, watch out for that bear" ok, I vaguely remember Wild Kingdom, but I know Jim was out in the field risking life and limb.

:lmao:Yep, it was big stuff and something that was always a hot topic at school the next day.

Oh me too!!!! I remember when it was worth getting up on Saturday mornings. I miss Mervyn's. I loved that store.

We still have an old fashion A&W, the drive in kind where they bring the tray out to your car and your root beer in cold frosty mug, just had lunch there the other day.

We also still have a drive in, last summer we went a few times because we could take the baby and he would sleep, I thought for sure we would wake him up during the Hangover, but this past summer we only went once.

I remember Farrells! On your birthday a marching band would make lots of noise and embarrass you to death!!

How about:

Jellies shoes

"Units" clothing stores

TG&Y

Banana Clips (can you tell I grew up in the 80's?)

Drive-in movies (although I think there's still a few stragglers somewhere)

A&W Hamburger joints (none around here that I know of)

White Tower hamburger joint

The huge Sears, Penney's, & Montgomery Wards Christmas catalogs

Tru-Ade non-carbonated orange "soda"

Original Candyland game

Big Chief (?) writing tablets

Milkman (although I know some places still have them)

The horse-drawn Friehoffer Baked Good wagons

---------------------

I'm sure there's more that some of you will remind me of..:goodvibes

when we left california there was still 2 a&w's nearby-they were combo places, a drive thru a&w with (what someone else mentioned missing) a der-wiener-schnitzel, and one with a kfc. here in washington we have a local a&w thats a stand alone place associated with a gas station (and yes, they still wrap in foil), and yet another associated with our closest kfc.

Farrels Ice Cream Parlors - I think there are 1 or 2 in S. California but I haven't seen a Farrells in 20+ years

School lunches where the ladies in the cafeteria actually cooked and served us on compartmentalized plastic trays

Teeter-Totters at park playgrounds - there are a couple of parks in Portland, OR. that have them and DD still loves to go for a ride whenever we are up there visiting.

Riding in the back of pick-up trucks :scared1:

Baked goods and caramel apples in our halloween trick or treating haul

Cartoons before the movie started

Sunday night TV - The Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. We looked forward to it all week.

Saturday morning cartoons

i remember farrell's-they were great, but their name was always associated with tragedy after the airplane crashed into our local sacramento ca. farrell's killing 22 and injuring 28:sad1::sad1::sad1:

it was'nt farrell's fault, but it was hard for them to recover-and when they seemed to start to they realy (word not appropriate for the dis) themselves by selling their b-day list (you signed up to get free ice cream on your b-day) to the selective service:eek: who began sending out warnings to supposedly only young men of 18 (i got one even though i was female, because the bday registration did'nt ask for your gender, just your name-and mine is gender neutral) to comply with the law and register for the draft:eek::eek::eek:

yeah-nothing promotes a fun place to go for ice cream on your birthday like a threatning letter from the selective service branch of the u.s. government:sad2::sad2:

Remember only getting news from ABC, NBC or CBS?

Or when MTV played videos?

Wow, I didn't know a plane crashed into a Farrells in Sac!

I remember Farrells! On your birthday a marching band would make lots of noise and embarrass you to death!!

I remember Farrels - we like to take the kids for certain celebrations and they loved it!

Def. Tru-Ade C.ann and drive in movies, but we still have A&W/Long John Silver combo. :thumbsup2

Family enjoying Little House on the Prairie while eating whatever cake we'd made that day.

Swings we made from our tall tree in yard

Grandma's home made biscuits!

Poodle shirts, w/sweater on backwards, bobby sox - don't miss the saddle shoes at all!

Elvis, Everly Brothers, and good music of the 50-60'ies

The pizza parlor where we'd take kids and watch our pizza being made - forget the name.

White side wall tires and lots of crome on car

Kids being kids

Hop scotch

Five and dime stores

Roy Rogers - best fast food there was!

Sky Bar - my favortie! Occasionally see them at local drug store

Jars of penny candy

The good old days when we never locked cars and house

HS lettermen's jackets - sadly kids don't wear them in our area

Green stamps

ladies wearing hats to church

1950's when avg income was $3,200., houses cost $14,000, cars $1,500., gas .20 gal and a stamp .03.!!!!!

The stand alone A & W's are gone. We have KFC/A&W combo restaurants. Yes the burgers, Pappa, Mamma, etc, still come in foil.

As a matter fact, as I recall a lot of the A & W's around here used to close for the winter.

My husband had a friend who had an original A&W and then about 5 yrs ago it burnt down. That was so sad. He did not rebuild. :sad1:

When did this happen? I live in Sac, YIkes. Maybe I need to google that. Jo

We still have a few A&Ws around, including a couple that still bring the food to your car.

We also have a drive-in theatre, not exactly close but only a few miles farther than the nearest major movie theatre.

We even have ice cream trucks and teeter-totters, both of which may have influenced our decision to move to this town. ;)

I'm with you on missing the huge Christmas catalogs. My brother & I used to flip through them and write down all the things we wanted, most of which we didn't know we wanted until we got our hands on the Sears Christmas catalog. :rotfl:

I miss penny candy stores. There was a great one next door to my elementary school that didn't close until the late 90s, and I still miss it. And Tart & Tiny candies, back when they weren't the candy-coated impostor that Wonka puts out now.

And Coke, real Coke made with sugar, in a glass bottle. Sometimes I can find it in the Mexican grocery when I'm in the city because they still make it that way down there, but I miss being able to walk into any store anywhere and get a good soda!

ETA: And Friendlys!! I know they still exist because we make a point of going there every time we're in VA Beach visiting my aunt, but we don't have them here in Michigan any more. That used to be the birthday dinner of choice for all the kids in my neighborhood, not so much for the food (which was quite good) but for the huge candy-topped sundaes.
