I always apologize and say I have the wrong number. If I call back and it's still a wrong number, I apologize again and say I really have the wrong number. I do not call back a third time.
A couple years ago, I called to make a reservation at a hotel and somehow ended up getting a man in his home office out in California. He proceeded to tell me that frequently he received calls for this hotel and couldn't figure it out. So, I told him the number I dialed and what hotel I was trying to get to. It was a really strange conversation because it was a wrong number but we spent several minutes on the phone trying to solve the mystery. Hopefully, my wrong number call was able to help him straighten out the problem so he didn't receive the hotel calls anymore. He was going to look into it based on the information I had given him. Strange but maybe a good wrong number for him. I never did get through to the hotel, booked elsewhere so it was really the hotels loss of revenue.
