What do YOU consider to be a clique thread?

Actually a friend sent me that photo.
I love it too, it makes me smile!

One definition might be: when the thread is more about people and personalities and less about a topic, it might be a clique.

When a thread contains daily "shout-outs" to all the regular posters, it's definitely a clique.

And when the participants talk in code or inside jokes that only they are privy to, it's absolutely a clique.

Is there a reason you didn't bold "absolutely"? :teeth: I'm just kidding!!! And to think, I'm picking apart your post instead of getting my son's stuff ready for swim practice and camp tomorrow. :rotfl2: I'm a wise one! ;)

I know that anyone is welcome to join in at what WAS the T&B thread, which is now the PMS in a Handbasket thread. We've had several people stop in today and have been welcomed just as newcomers have always been. Our topics change frequently, so there's nothing really to catch up on and if there's something that needs to be explained, someone will do so.

Reddixie, you're welcome to stop in (and so is anyone else, of course)!

YES, ME too, LULU: and did the one kitty "FLYING" get hurt when he landed?

STARTING THE CLUELESS THREAD......... :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I find it hard to put into words what to me defines a clique but I definitely know one when I've landed in the middle. I agree with Kathy's definition and will add another of mine. When I click the post count and see that of the 2000+ posts, half or a quarter are by the same posters, that is a clique.

I don't look at them as clique threads (I'm a regular on the yaya's and an occasional in the T&B/Handbasket) I look at them as a chance to meet new people here on the DIS. If I hadn't jumped in to the yaya's a couple of years ago then I would probably still be an occasional poster (tho my family might prefer this :teeth: ).

Don't look at them as something to be afraid of or as intimidating because there are people already there....look at them as a chance to network and meet new folks!! Go for it people....

now let's all sing along
"Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold"

Then, by that definition, the game threads are also definitely cliques - some of those people don't post to any other threads besides game threads, and they have post counts through the roof. :)

I see clique threads as being those that are frequented by the same posters, who come to know each other through that. Personally, they don't bother me, and in the past I posted on some quite a bit. I still do post now and then on some.

That's me then, on the Change a Letter Word thread and the True/False thread!! :teeth:

Another example of a clique to me would be:

-You enter a thread and read up to the last post. There are only about 5 or 6 people posting (even though there are 8 pages).

-You post something that lends itself to a response.

-You are ignored and the others keep responding only to what the original posters say.

I'm not so insecure as to think that everytime I don't get a response I'm being ostrasized. I realize that sometimes posts get listed at the same time, and a post may be the last on a page so it might not be seen, but I do think people get ignored b/c cliques are too busy responding to each other.

A clique, by definition, implies exclusivity.
I have sensed that on a few threads here. I couldn't get acknowledged if I'd been Mickey Mouse himself. But that's OK. Once I realized I wasn't comfortable there, I could move on. No biggie.
But if you do find yourself checking out an established thread, I do think you need to respect the tone and nature of the group. I witnessed an interloper last week, one many are aware of, who just wanted to stir up trouble. That was his/her only reason for visiting that thread. That's not cool.
If you like the direction of a group, by all means, jump in and contribute. If you don't care for it, there's a million more. That's the beauty of the CB.

I do want to add that occassionally one person, usually a new addition, can give a group a black eye when they don't respect the tone of a thread. This happened on one of the closed threads this week. It was never the intention of the group's regulars for it to be less than good, clean fun, but others had different ideas and dragged the entire thread down. Shame, really.

Why is it when I read this, the little voice in my head sounds like Jeff Foxworthy?

Hey we made the clique list, I feel so special.

Funny story. The thing about "code" words is they tend to evolve. Sometimes we don't realize we have taken to using a word in a funny way.

Classic example. On the Malestrom/fastpass thread we use the term "borg" to mean "think alike" or even "jinx" if two people post the same thought at the same time. I really didn't even realize our usage was "code" until some one asked about it. I had to check with my husband to see if he could get it from the context. He couldn't. Of course he thinks me and my 'imaginary friends' are nuts... Really I think the use of the term borg just really dates us. Star Trek Next Generation (STNG) Yup. We are way cool.

We do the shout outs on the Fastpass thread. I have mine saved to a word doc, so do most of us who do shout outs. I only update it every now and again so new people do not get added right away. I never take anyone out (personal policy, not everyone does this). So once you get added to my shout out you are in for life :) But if you don't make it in, take no offense. We are lazy sometimes.

We are Borg, Haley :)

And all will know what that means.

Like the orli thread :cool1:

Just because we made it to 3,000 posts with about 5 of us dosen't mean we are obsessed...

The Malestrom/fastpass thread is the first one I think of when the word "clique" is mentioned. One time on a thread I was on, (a different thread), someone responded to me and was really out of line (I did not respond back to this person, but I was shocked because it seemed to come out of nowhere). A few people came on and supported this person because they knew them from the Maelstrom thread. Even though this person was OBVIOUSLY in the wrong, they stuck up for them. I knew they were from the Malestrom thread because it said so in their siggy. So I clicked on that thread to see what it was about and I had NO idea what the posters were talking about. They had their own language. Obviously they were friends and cared about each other, but it's not like someone could just join in and expect to fit in. To me, THAT'S a clique.

JMO. Sorry if it offends anyone.

Edited to add: HaleyB this was not directed at you, just the Malestrom thread. I'm sure you are a very nice person and I have enjoyed your posts on other threads. :goodvibes

Don't really care about the clique thread, since I'm not on here for that, but my God get the damn game threads off the board...they are DRIVENUTS.

I'd say the TV and game threads are less clique-ish than some of the others mentioned. I think I'll go with WM Kathy's definitions. Those are definitely cliques - but not necessarily in a bad way.

In high school there were obvious cliques. Some I wished I was part of, some I had no interest. Generally, the ones I didn't like were the ones where people were the sole interest seemed to be making fun of or bullying others. They were the minority thankfully and still are. I find 20 years after high school, I'm still the same way.

Here (on the internet here, not the DIS here), it's harder to know which are which, so I tend to stay out of all of them. I lurk on occasion for sure, typically when something else is brewing. Like when Mel's trip report was shut down, I started reading the tail end of the fastpass/Maelstrom thread and found it quite funny (and learned what ZZUB'ing was so I could follow along when Mel's trip report continued). And I have to admit, I love the edit comments. Other than that thread, I only know who's friends with who when the hijacking starts which is more bothersome to me than the clique threads themselves.

My point is that all cliques aren't bad. They're just a group of friends that have found one another. Some find humor in situations where I don't see it. I probably find a lot of things funny that others don't. Hey, whatever floats your boat. It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round!

My definition:
If a post moves at the speed of light, it's a clique thread.

I was part of the Ladies Trip thread for a while and man, oh man, did that thing travel fast! I would thoughtfully reply to someone (so it took a minute or two) and once I posted my response was 2 pages down from the post I was quoting! I don't know how the people on the clique threads can keep up!
