I overheard a conversation at work the other day and I want to get your opinion.

They were discussing coffee cake. Someone mentioned that they had it for the first time the week before and was surprised at how much it did NOT taste like coffee. They were "really disappointed" (as they put it) and thought that the person who made it should really look up a good recipe because all this coffee cake tasted like was cinnamon. :confused3 I had to listen to this conversation for damn near a half hour. Was driving me nuts.

I'm not sure what you consider coffee cake but I've always known it to be a cinnamon type cake usually made in a bundt pan. I've never had one that tasted like actual coffee. I think it's called coffee cake because a lot of people eat it with coffee, no?

What do you think? Cinnamon flavored or coffee flavored?

I'm with you, there's no coffee flavoring in coffee cake.

I agree...although I've also got an orange spice and blueberry 'coffee cake' recipe, so it doesn't always have to have cinnamon. To me, coffee cake is something that's eaten when you have someone over for coffee, definitely not a coffee-flavoured cake!

I thought this was it as well, I have never had a coffee cake that tasted like coffee LOL

:rotfl: definitely cinnamon flavored...it's made to GO with coffee, not to taste like coffee! :thumbsup2

I've always figured coffee cake is any not-too-sweet cake that would go well with coffee.

They are often cinnamon, but I've also made other flavors and one of my favorites is more vanilla flavor than cinnamon (just a thin ribbon of cinnamon sugar in it).

Hehehehe...

Coffee cake is cake eaten WITH coffee, not coffee flavored cake. My favorite is Entenmann's crumb coffee cake.

A cake (one layer) to eat along side coffee. Sheesh NEVER had one that remotely tasted like coffee. Do some folks live in caves? :cool1:

Ditto everyone. This reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom offered me oyster crackers for my soup and I FREAKED out. Until I was about 13, I was convinced that there were actual oysters/oyster flavoring (something I dislike) in the crackers. Even when my parents tried to tell me otherwise, I didn't believe them - I thought they were just trying to get me to eat oysters!

Yeah, mostly I've seen them cinnamon flavored. I also have had an apple, a blueberry and a peach. But I just couldn't believe how "upset" this woman was (and she was a grown woman, maybe in her later 40's-early 50's) that it didn't have a coffee flavor. She said how deceiving it was. It was quite comical actually. LOL

People never cease to amaze me. I figured it was some 15yo--not a grown person.

And this is the first time she has ever had coffee cake? wonder what rock she has been living under? :upsidedow

Now for the real question, who has an awesome coffee cake recipe? I have been looking for a good one and it does not need to be quick and easy.

Coffee cake gets its name because it is often served with coffee not because it tastes like coffee. Typically coffee cake would have a cinnamon crumb while the cake part would be pretty plain tasting like a yellow or pound cake.

My mom converted to Mormonism when I was a kid, and since Mormons can't have caffeine we never had coffee cake. I was in my twenties before I had some, and realized that it didn't have actual coffee in it. I don't know what my mom was thinking.

Not that it has anything to do with this post, but it reminded me of when I asked my husband (quite a few years ago) if he wanted a piece of cheesecake. He looked at me like I had nine heads and said, "I am NOT eating cake with CHEESE in it" OH MY!!! He still doesn't eat it til this day. He now knows it's made with cream cheese but he still won't eat it because he doesn't like cream cheese (even though I've never seen him try it) :confused3

Made this recipe for my church, and it was amazing. Just a simple coffee cake, but it's great. I doubled and put it in an 11 X 17 pan. From http://allrecipes.com/recipe/aunt-annes-coffee-cake/detail.aspx

Aunt Anne's Coffee Cake

Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
3/4 cup milk, or as needed
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9x13 inch pan. Make the streusel topping: In a medium bowl, combine 1/4 cup flour, 2/3 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Here's another one I used to make for work, to great applause: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/jewish-apple-cake/

Jewish Apple Cake

Ingredients
2 cups peeled apples, thinly sliced
5 tablespoons white sugar
2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
2 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 cup orange juice
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup butter, melted
1/3 cup orange juice
2/3 cup white sugar

Directions

Preheat an oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9 inch tube pan.

Mix apples, 5 tablespoons sugar, and 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon in a bowl and set aside. Beat the oil and 2 cups of sugar with an electric mixer in a large bowl. Add the room-temperature eggs one at a time, allowing each egg to blend into the sugar mixture before adding the next. Beat in the vanilla and 1/4 cup of orange juice with the last egg. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a small bowl and stir into the sugar mixture; mixing until just incorporated. Pour half of the batter into the prepared tube pan. Layer the apple mixture on top, then pour the remaining batter over the apples.

Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 1 hour and 25 minutes. Allow cake to cool completely in the pan before removing.

To make glaze: Combine butter, 1/3 cup of orange juice, and 2/3 cup of sugar in a bowl. Pour over the warm cake while still in the pan.

Seriously????

And I thought I'd heard it all...

.......:rotfl2: .....I suppose, when you think about it....coffee cake - cake that tastes like coffee DOES make sense, in some weird, twisted, out-of-touch, live-in-a-cave-away-from-the-rest-of-mankind sort of way...
