What did you grow up doing that you thought everybody did?

I see we did a lot of the same things as others on this thread. :)

I put a slice of cheese on top of my spaghetti, then I'd cover it up with the sauce. The cheese would be all melty. :) Ofcourse I'd add parmesan cheese as well!

We had tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches or beef stew & hot rolls, especially when it was cold or rainy. My DH thought I was nuts when I told him one day, "This is a good meal for cold/rainy weather.". He had never heard of having special meals for cold/rainy weather!

Oh, we had navy beans on those cold/rainy days too. My dad would soak them over night and put them in the crock pot. The only way I'd eat them is with a ton of ketchup! They were really good that way! DH doesn't like beans at all. :sad2:

We had cinnamon toast regularly. Loved it! Haven't had it in years. Just put bread on a cookie sheet, put a pat of butter in the center of each slice, sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon. Heat till butter is melted. Sooo good!

We made cheese toast as part of our breakfast too. (either cheese toast or cinnamon toast) Put the bread on a cookie sheet, a pat of butter and a slice of cheese. Heat until bubbly. :)

Ketchup on scrambled eggs. I still do it.

I put chips on my sandwiches and fries on my burgers. LOL.

I made chocolate milk and poured it over my cereal. (Sometimes still do.) Tastes great especially on Wheaties. :)

I would take mom's frosting and eat it with a spoon. Then one day, I saw a container of cookies. Any cookies would do, but vanilla wafers worked pretty well. Ummm. Chocolate frosting and vanilla wafers. Sooo good!

My best friend and I would go over to her house after elementary school, right off the bus, and make "get well potatoes" LOL. From instant! LOL. We were sick of school and a bowl of instant mashed potatoes in front of the TV was just the ticket. I haven't had instant potatoes since then! We thought it was the best thing! :sad2:

Santa didn't wrap presents for us either growing up. I liked running into the room and seeing everything in all it's glory! :) DH had it all wrapped. Never heard of anything different! Ofcourse, I never heard of wrapping Santa's stuff! We wrap now. No biggie.

Great thread, OP! :thumbsup2

Mixing mayo and ketchup together and dipping fries in it, yummy! :thumbsup2

Nothing wierd in that! Here in Utah we call it fry sauce and you can get it at most fast food places and you can buy it in the store. Yummy! I wouldn't eat fries without it.

My mother leaves her butter out - she doesn't refrigerate it when she's not using it. We never got sick from that. DH thought I was trying to poison him by leaving it out. I hate "hard" butter
If you go through it within a couple of days it is fine. If not, use a butter keeper like I do. Basically uses water to cover the surface of the butter so it will not mold.

:thumbsup2 I grew up thinkin' it was perfectly normal to shucked and eat raw clams and to eat my steak rare. Drinking milk with everything especially pizza, chips and spaghetti. I also thought everyone had a tastycake chocolate cupcake with milk before bed. Oh and the kicker brown gravy on french fries. My sisters and I still eat all the same stuff today( except for the tastycake gotta watch that weight;) ) Terri

I grew up in California, but never heard of anyone putting ketchup on tacos. Were you in Northern or Southern Cal? I think we were too close to Mexico to not use salsa on a taco.

Southern California. We always got our tortillas from the tortilla factory. My mother never seasoned the beef, so the ketchup actually made the taco's taste good.

but my Mom and Dad didnt like cold pizza so they would leave the left-overs on the counter and eat it room temp the next day........they never seemed to get sick. I thought everyone ate say old room temp pizza until I got old enough to learn NO!!!!!!

I never saw this either until I started dating my DH. His family would order pizza and leave it out as well. Now we do it too. I warm mine up but we do leave it sit out the first night. I will sometimes put it away if I feel like it but have no trouble leaving it sit.

For some crazy reason, my mom gave us hot Jello to drink when we were sick--thought it was a standard, but everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I say it.

Yummy! Our Grandma used to always give my sister and I a tiny shot glass of hot Jello whenever she was making Jello. So good!

Oh.. ha... ha.. I completely forgot one.. For all you catholics out there, you will get a kick out of this one... Right before our first communion, (we were soooooo obsessed with it), we would practice by taking the golden circles white bread (you know the one.. in the brown bag.. and not so square.. just tasted so much better than plain square wonder bread! DUH!) and making little host's out of it.. then my sister and I would take turns being the Priest and the communion girl.. Oh my.. that sounds kind of naughty now!! :rotfl2:

I thought every one wore flare legged jeans and platform shoes. When I hit Preppyville, I found out that apparently they didn't. :confused3

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: I was just thinking about how my friends and I used to do that when we were kids! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: At lunch, we would take any food (crackers, fruit roll ups with those cut out shapes, bread, etc. ) we had and pretend it was the host. :rotfl2:

OMG....I forgot about cinnamon toast.....I used to love that as a kid! We only had it for "special" occassions, though!!!

and as for Santa...he always wrapped the gifts in our house when I was growing up! I had no idea that Santa didn't wrap gifts until I married my husband....but Santa definitely still wraps our kids gifts!!!! :thumbsup2
