What did you grow up doing that you thought everybody did?

For some crazy reason, my mom gave us hot Jello to drink when we were sick--thought it was a standard, but everyone looks at me like I'm crazy when I say it.
My mom gave us hot Jello when we were sick too. It was always red, it didn't matter what flavor, but it had to be red. I asked DS10 if he wanted some when he was sick one time and he thought I was nuts.

Mom also used to make juice slushies (o.j. or grape in the blender with ice) with breakfast on the weekends. On weekdays she would make her version of eggnog for a quick breakfast. I hated it and was grossed out about drinking raw eggs.

We were kind of poor and always had a big garden (an acre) so we always had lots of veggies. Sometimes we only had meals with fresh veggies no meat. DH came to the house one time when my mom had fixed all veggies and asked me where the meat was. It didn't even dawn on me that you needed meat
Sounds like what happened not too long after DH and I moved in together.
He said "since when are you a vegitarian". I was was like "what do you mean, there is fat back in the beans". My grandmother very seldom fixed meat(other than what was used to season the vegetables) in the summer except on Sundays. That was how I was use to cooking.

Well, Santa DOES NOT wrap his gifts. Mom and Dad's gifts to the kids are under the tree and on Christmas Eve Santa leaves a nice display of all of the toys he is giving! I couldn't beleive it when I had my own kids and my Dh and my Friends were surprised that Santa didn't wrap our gifts.
That also happened with DH and me. He could not believe that the gifts would not be wrapped

We had cornbread and milk in a bowl quite a bit. I still love it to this day, but I just don't make the cornbread like my mom though
yep called it crumb-in. I like mine w/butter milk and fresh spring onions. We usually ate it in large glasses on Sunday (or was it Sat) evening watching Hee Haw

Tuna macaroni salad is about the only way I'll eat tuna.

What about cheese toast? How do you make it? We would put one slice of bread down with cheese on top then sprinkle that with sugar and broil. YUMMY!

L. Thornton mayo on hot dogs isn't really that bad since most people in the South, including myself, likes to eat slaw on them and there is usually a lot of mayo in the slaw.

Ummm...I grew up on a farm and thought (until about 2nd grade) everyone "prepared" their own food from "scratch".

Everything from the pen to the table.

I grew up in Southern California so I thought it was normal to have the beach and all the different theme parks within a 30 minute drive from your house. I remember distinctly having the ephiny that not everybody got to go to Disneyland every year one day while watching some TV show.

That is how my grandmother always made it
I haven't had that in years.

We had a habit in my house: changing into your PJ's as soon as you got home because it was more comfortable.
One time I had someone drop by at around 6pm and they said, "Why are you in your PJ's already? Are you sick?" LOL

I still change into PJ's or something like them if I don't plan on going out after I come home from work.

I also did fried salami, fried bologna. Another goodie is fried matzo. Break up matzo in quarters, dip the pieces in egg, and fry in a pan with oil. Add salt. pepper and any herbs you like. I like minced onion.

We had a peculiar morning ritual. It would start out with these "boxes",so to speak , filled with different types of grains, some would have oats, others wheat, others rice and yet others were corn. Some were even a combination
of the grains.

Some of these would be sweetened with sugary confections thus making them especially popular for children.

We had these odd shaped holding tablewares called"bowls" which we would
then pour the grains from the boxes into. Usually filling the bowl halfway
or 3/4 way.

There was a white substance called"milk" I believe, that one of us
accidentally spilt into another's bowl one morning and we discovered
actually what had been an accident turned out to be something quite tasty.
We also discovered the grains cannot be left too long sitting in this "milk"
or else the grains would turn soggy. Although there was one favorite Cap'n something that would stay Crunchy even in "milk".

The entire ritual I must say became less of a mess when one of us thought It would be a good idea to eat the grains out of the bowl using something called a "spoon".
To this day it is something I still do from time to time. :) :rotfl:

.

Mine too, she called it Jello Water!

I put straight sugar on my french toast. It's always been that way. I put sour pickles on my tuna fish. I like ketchup on macaroni and cheese casserole. When I was a kid I thought everyone went on vacation. I also thought it was normal to be hanging out on a movie set, or to have a car rigged so that the windows would blow out sitting in the driveway.

Wow, I haven't eaten that in like 10 years! My grandfather grew up on an indian reservation and he ate his buttermilk and cornbread daily, so when I would visit, I would eat it too.

Let's see... Drinking the juice from the olive and pickle jar.. my sister and I would fight over who would get to do it! Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar... American Cheese wrapped around Sour pickles and dipped in mustard...

Anyone remember Taylor Ham? We never knew what Bacon was.. we had Taylor ham with our soft boiled eggs!

Baked Ziti was made with Velveeta..

Stouffers Macaroni and cheese was what we got to eat when we were sick..

Vaseline was our shoe polish...

Actually.. Vaseline was the magic cure for everything... we had a HUGE jar of it at all times and it was put on everything.. from scrapes to behind your ear if you had a earache...

Oh.. and we always had to take our shoes off when we got in my mom's car..
We thought everyone did this in every car.. but we eventually discovered the truth... she had white leather seats and didn't want us scuffing up the back of the bucket seats with our shoes!..

Gee.. this has got me on a roll!! LOL!!

Kathy

One thing that freaked me out when I ate at a friends house is that there was no wine or bread on the table.

We have always and will always set a table with bread and wine. My friends parents thought my family had a drinking problem and I thought they just had problems...too funny :rotfl2:

French fries dipped in mayonaisse! (well not currently anyway) Why can't they create low carb french fries?

I had never heard of Taylor Ham until I saw a show about it on the Food Network last week. They said it was a regional thing in NJ. It looks like something I would like, but I don't have any plans to go to NJ and probably never will.
