What common phrases do you hate?

First world problems.

I dislike that one, too. I think another poster mentioned it earlier.

I also really dislike when someone immediately goes on and on about how "The book was better" when said as a response to someone really liking a movie. It sounds snooty and shuts down the conversation. Just let the person enjoy liking the movie, goshdarnit! I think "first world problems" often shuts down conversations, too. Problems and likes are relative.

On a similar note, I hear this type of thing a lot, "This movie is based off the book."

"Based on" has been working for centuries, what, it isn't good enough anymore?

Oh, that one gets me, too! My favorite on/off switch, though, is when people mention that they bought or saw something "offline" when it's obvious from context they meant "ONline"! I'm always wondering (to myself), "Are you not aware that those are opposites? :confused3 It's not like flammable/inflammable"

Ok. I'm sure I will hate embies too, but what does it even stand for--emblem, embassy? I'm sure I'm missing the obvious....

Count me in; I was also trying and failing to think of what that stood for!

Wow. Never in a million years would I have guessed that!

On a related note, I hate it when someone pronounces "crisp" as "cris-pah"

A lot of the ones mentioned annoy me. A few others are "jump in the shower". My husband says that all the time. I cannot stand it. Unless he is doing jumping jacks in there it isn't correct. Another is when someone asks "want to go with?" Go with whom?? Very irritating.

Anything that contains the word "dear!". Especially if the user is younger than I am. ;)

Mine is "mano a mano". It's not that I don't like the phrase, but that most people who use the phrase don't understand the meaning and misuse it.

It means "hand to hand". The common misperception is that it means "man to man". It's supposed to mean in single combat, as in a fistfight.

Baby Daddy or Baby Momma

It went from being a trashy phrase to mainstream.

Not only is it grammatically a fingernail on my chalkboard of life, but to me is is just disrespectful.

I'm going to be blatantly non-PC here and say that sometimes, Baby Mama or Baby Daddy just fits the situation. That two word phrase sums up a lot of information. It means something much different from "the father/mother of my child." Goes way beyond that.

I can't stand when anyone says Chillaxin! My sister in law says it all the time, and i love her, but can't stand when she says it! lol

The difference between "date night" and "dinner out" is you bring the kids with you on the latter, but not the former ;)

::yes:: I don't mind the term "date night" when used by couples. I hate it when people use it to describe an outing with their child. I have several friends who do this on Facebook. Imagine a picture of a woman and her 8yo dd at the movies and the caption says "Date Night -- seeing Frozen with dd8".

Shudder. :scared:

A while ago I saw a saying, made me laugh because of how much I dislike the word "misuse of the word literally makes me figuratively insane." Don't say literally unless it's LITERAL! ugh

Also, because I work with young kids, this one "Sorry, not sorry." WHAT? then just don't say anything. you are sorry that you aren't sorry? You should be sorry but you aren't. No sense. I hate it.

I find that rather cute!
