What color is your daughter's prom dress/son's colors

Not broke. DD's dress was from TJMaxx, and we got it for 1/5th the retail selling price (and it is, in fact, currently available from Needless Markup for that 5x price....). We are both quite gleeful about that.

She is wearing last year's shoes. She got her jewelry from a very inexpensive place (costume jewelry, obviously). She has last year's clutch. She only needs a blingy belt....can't imagine that will be too much. So, all in, counting nails, hair, shoes, tickets, etc for less than $200, which was her objective. It's her money, BTW....not mine. So that helps. Spending MY money is much easier than spending hers.

Oh, and her date is equally frugal. He's wearing his choir tuxedo (he knows the wardrobe mistress....;-)), and a matching bow tie to DD's dress from the wardrobe department at the high school theater (both he and my DD are theater geeks).

We aren't broke by any stretch either. My dd is pretty reasonable when it comes to spending money. Her dress was $60 (on sale plus coupon at Macy's), shoes are $70, ticket is $40. She's getting her hair highlighted but that's something that gets done fairly regularly. She may want a manu/pedi. She'll do her own makeup. She's going with friends so I think we'll skip the flowers unless dh wants to buy them for her.

The big unknown is alterations. We have an appointment on Thursday. The dress needs to be taken in and shortened.

Thankfully not broke, but it was looking that way at the beginning of dress shopping. She was having trouble finding something so I kept upping the budget. She ended up finding a dress for under $200. Not sure about shoes, may wear a pair of mine. No jewelry since the top of the dress is all beaded with crystals. Hair and nails may be pricey.
She's paying for her ticket and her share of the limo.

Our choirs let the kids hold up to their tuxes and gowns. I recently learned that dd19 still has hers, so I'll have ds18 return it with his tux.

You guys are really doing great with prices. Prom isn't until next year for my daughter but it would be great if she could look after prom season and get a good deal. Two years ago a friend told me her daughters gown cost over $800 so I've been scared ever since. Lol

I have a friend who paid $700 for her daughter's before alterations, this was four years ago. I'm having DD's custom made and I'm not spending that much. Bonus being, it's being made for her body, so no alterations necessary. I can tell you from painful experience those are often pricey and take much more time than you would expect, so plan ahead. I know off the rack dresses will always have to be shortened for my DD so I always factor that into my price calculations.

Oh, there are plenty of gowns out there for that price and more. My dd could want an $800 gown all she'd like but that wouldn't happen. I think that's what I paid for my wedding gown.

Yikes, I forgot about alterations. Last year we lucked out and she found a petite dress that fit her perfect, not so lucky this year.
Question for those of you who have had them done, if its the length that needs to be altered we should have the shoes first right?

Yes! I lucked out one year, I used a friend's cleaning lady who also made costumes for strippers - did a nice job with the alterations.

It's been pricey, by my standards, but we've saved in a couple small areas.
Dress was $170 and alterations were $30. Shoes she already owned. (yes, make sure you have them before seeing a seamstress.) She has a clutch that will work, and she has some clips for her hair that will work. She is paying to get her hair done, and will do her own makeup and nails.

I'm not too upset by the cost since she's had some really cheap dresses over the years (last years prom dress was $9 from an outlet). I figure I can deal with one pricey dress...

Absolutely you want the shoes. Last year I paid $85 for the length to be altered and I pushed for them to have it back to me in four weeks. It's standard operating procedure for them to ask when your event is and expect to return it back to you immediately prior. That didn't work for me & I fudged the date with them. The alteration I had done was for several layers of chiffon to be shortened involving an angle into the front slit, so we weren't simply talking about a simple turning up of a straight hem to be done in ten minutes.

The designer who is doing DD's dress this year does custom bridal and will do specialty alterations of wedding gowns and will not give estimates on time without looking at the garment & an extensive consultation on the work to be done. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around how she's going to accomplish some of the alterations I've seen -- and I know plenty of the alteration work alone is more than I paid for my wedding gown and alterations many moons ago.

You know there's some good stories there! I know someone who had a production company that provided dancers for casino shows. I got an earful there.

Thanks Cabanafrau that is what I figured. We still have time, her prom isn't until the middle of June and luckily it is just a straight hem that needs to be taken up.
I know my SIL paid almost as much in alterations as she did for my niece's dress. I'm hoping since its a simple hemming that it won't be too bad.

I always find it painful to buy clothes and then drop more money to alter them. Hopefully you can get a simple hemming up cheaply and quickly. Cheapo me would still be moaning about more $$, but I just need to get over myself.

oh I am moaning LOL because we got away without needing them last year I just assumed it would be the same this year. Luckily the dress she ended up with was inexpensive compared to many she tried on so even with the alterations its not as bad as it could have been.

My dd wears at least a 00 in a dress but the smallest hers came was a 1 ( I know, poor thing). It's kind of a high low style. Short dress with sheer long over skirt. The long skirt needs to be shortened but that shouldn't be a big deal. It only has a simple finishing stitch on it. The short dress needs to be taken in on top at least since it's strapless. I'm hoping that won't be a huge expense.

DD's dress for her boyfriends prom is coral. It's a really pretty color and DD has dark hair (at the moment) and it really stands out with the color. We bought it at a bridal shop for $120. Shoes are from 8th grade homecoming. We found some hair accessories on Amazon for like $30 (kiosk at the mall wanted $90!). Hair will be done at salon, makeup done by DD. Boyfriend is buying prom tickets ($60 each). No limo they will just drive. And never thought of a purse or something, will have to look around.

To the poster who commented about only needing a straight hem - be careful! We took DD's to be hemmed and that's exactly what the woman did, hemmed it straight all the way around. Well if your daughter has any kind of butt, the straight hem will not work! DD's dress was 4 inches too short in the back with her shoes on (yup, she had her shoes on when she was measured for alterations). Needless to say, I had to scour the entire USA to find the dress again, in a size that could be altered down to her size. Luckily, found a small enough dress in Texas, have the 2nd dress and it is currently at the bridal shop being altered correctly this time. And yup, alterations at the bridal shop cost as much as the dress did. Dress was $120, alterations, $120! (and FYI - the woman who messed up the first dress did pay me for it and returned the money I had paid her to alter it - so luckily I only paid for one dress and one alteration!) Next year is DD's prom, so I have learned my lesson about alterations.

Mama deserves a medal -- and a cocktail!

Hope your DD has a great time -- and her dress fits perfectly!

Dis is renting a gray tux with a gray vest (they don't wear cummerbunds anymore). His date is wearing navy blue, so he'll get a matching tie.

This is exactly the colors that my son and his date are wearing!

We aren't broke either still I kept playing Pretty in Pink hoping Little darling would pull s Molly Ringwald and make her dress. Guess we are probably looking at $250 all in, but the prom at her school is not cheap either is not cheap either.
