What books did you read at school?

The Hobbit
1984
The Jungle
Catcher in the Rye
Lord of the Flies
Of Mice and Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
Animal Farm
The Outsiders
Fahrenheit 451
Pride & Prejudice
The Telltale Heart
Jane Eyre
Death of a Salesman
Catch-22
The Call of the Wild
Don Quixote

To name a few. I took a lot of English classes. Plus a lot of Shakespeare

I’m pretty old but remember To Kill a mockingbird, animal farm, call of the wild. Probably jane eyre although I might have it read it on my own. As I did Pride and prejudice. I grew up in a small town. Walked to the library every Saturday for a new stack of books that always included Nancy drew, the Bobbsy twins, cherry Ames. Reading was such a pleasure back then.

Why did you read catch 22

Sounds like you and I grew up in the same era. I couldn't wait for the new Nancy Drew or Bobbsey Twins book to come out.

in jr and sr high-

Lord of the Flies

Of Mice and Men

both of these were required along with (best as I can remember)-the great gatsby :crazy2: :crazy2: :crazy2: , julius caesar, the grapes of wrath :crazy2::crazy2::crazy2: and great expectations (I detest the writing styles of both Steinbeck and Fitzgerald to this day).

I read ALLOT back then-the bookmobile was a godsend since we had no library within a reasonable distance (or public transportation to get to one), reading for enjoyment is something I can no longer do-i greatly miss it.

All of these plus a few more. Also alot of Faulkner because of my teachers loved him.

It was required by one of the English classes I took.
It was a radical book and I was first introduced to the book as a select reading in humourous high school competition when I was 14 listening to other competitors. 1972 our high school decided that if students choose their own curriculum like college methods.. students would do better... that was a life saver for me....1974 a class titled political literature was available as a senior... I was the only student to finish catch 22 as outside reading and quizzes...1983 I bought his new book and he autograph the book in NYC book fair

Captain Orr is one of three fictional characters that have inspired my life

Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew. Some how I made it through elementary school, Junior High, High school and 4 years of college without having to read Shakespeare.

Most of the classics already mentioned, and then some. The one that stuck with me (as in I actually really enjoyed it) was A Separate Peace. I really should go back and reread that. Also, A Wrinkle in Time, but I think that was probably fifth grade or so.

When not reading required material, I was always reading something. I can't even remember all the stuff I hauled home in my bike basket from the library, or all the books I read off my parent's shelves. Or all the stuff I bought from the Scholastic Book Fair. (That was the one time of year my parent's really loosened the purse strings and let me go a little nuts.)

YA literature wasn't much of a thing growing up, so I pretty much went from kid's books to adult books. (I do remember reading the entire Trixie Belden series, and most of Nancy Drew. I was too old for Babysitter's Club and Goosebumps by the time those sorts of things started creating YA as a genre.)

I remember reading my first Stephen King book probably in the fourth or fifth grade or so. Mom and dad didn't police my reading very much, and even for that all they said was, "Fine, but if you have nightmares, you aren't sleeping with us." They were big readers and raised me to be one, too, a fact for which I am forever grateful.

Count of Monte Cristo -Dumas
The Jungle - Upton Sinclair

When little it was Indian in the Cupboard, Dracula, A Night to Remember

Shakespeare.... I also... and taught Romeo for years to freshman having no secondary or college classes 🤯 🤯... nope...my classes were always attended by siblings 😉😉🤔🤔

"alot of Shakespeare", lol. Our 9th grade teacher loved Shakespeare and we spent the whole year on everything Shakespeare. The result is: I hate anything to do with Shakespeare, lol.
You are lucky to read such classics. I can't even recall what we read, which says alot I guess:)

To Kill a Mockingbird

one of my all time favorite books and one of only two books that upon first reading I immediately re-read. odd thing is the other is 'in cold blood' and I did not learn until many decades later of the close relationship between the two authors.

Also, A Wrinkle in Time, but I think that was probably fifth grade or so.

when I was in elementary school it was still k-6th and teachers in every grade still did a read-aloud time each day to us (usualy right after lunch to get us to wind down and re-focus). a wrinkle in time was read to the 6th graders (and I remember charlie and the chocolate factory in 5th, the island of the blue dolphins in 4th and charlotte's web in 3rd:lovestruc).

Or all the stuff I bought from the Scholastic Book Fair. (That was the one time of year my parent's really loosened the purse strings and let me go a little nuts.)

the biggest sellers in the particular grades were always whatever the teacher read out loud to us that year.

My Mother can no longer read books, which she loved to do, with her macular degeneration. However, her love of books continues with audio books. She loves listening to them.

I loved the Bobbsey Twins books. I recently found one in an antique shop and now proudly display it in my sewing room:)

bert and nan, flossie and freddie :teeth:

I just looked the books up-i'm guessing most people read the revised versions but it looks like the ones I read were the originals that were published as early as 1904:faint: I remember reading them in the '60's and '70's and knowing they were horribly outdated (and racist) but I had no idea how old they were (no wonder the covers were all falling off them and the binding was barely holding them together).
