Someone I know is moving and happens to be flying a lot prior to the move so what would be the best inexpensive way to get belongings to the new place one way?

Luggage of course, but it is super expensive to go one way and takes up so much is isn't practical. Any good alternative containers for the plane?

Over the road shipping would be cheapest. Plastic bins can be checked on planes. Tape them shut with heavy duty tape but know the tape may be sliced. My recommendation would be more pricey than luggage and that is equipment cases.

I can't think of any inexpensive way to do this by plane. When my son moved cross country, he did the U-Haul think where you pack up one of those moving cubes and then U-Haul transports it to you. I think he had 2 cubes and it was about $1500 all in. This took care of about a 1 bedroom sized apartment.

Airlines will generally accept boxes. Check the dimension limits for your airline. Staples, Home Depot are good sources. Tape, don't cross fold the box flaps.
Did this moving back from Europe. Plus, then everything is neatly boxed in the same size boxes at the new place if not needed right away. This worked great for setting up new home with basics, without having to wait for everything to arrive slow/cheaper freight. Just be sure to pack well, I felt they were harder on boxes than they are on luggage lol.

OP said friend will be making multiple air trips prior to moving. SW allows 2 checked 50 lb per pax.

Years ago there was a SW reality show. At the time the limit was 70 lb. A family moving checked 70 lb boxes

Yeah, that was my one thought--a few trips on Southwest might get a lot of it done.

Also, for USA moves, if they want to pack a couple boxes of books (up to 70 lbs) - the USPS has a decent book/media rate so we actually have not felt guilty moving favorite books that way.

I mentioned this! I remember using the book rate a while back & it was a big savings so all the books have been pulled to be mailed.
