What age..no more stroller

My DD is almost 7 and DS will turn 4 when we're there in 2 1/2 weeks I think we'll use a stroller, more as if they get tired they can use it kind of thing. And for bags.

This is our first trip to Disney World and we are staying at Port Orleans Riverside. We are bringing the stroller for DS that will have just turned 5. I even think my 9 year old DS (he's small) will climb in for a temporary rest. It's a little bulky but we got rid of the umbrella one because it didnt manuever well. We are flying too so it's convenient in the airport. It will be have it's convenient moments at Disney World too. I hope it's not a pain with the buses, but I don't want to rent one.

Last year my daughters were 4 and 6, so we brought an umbrella stroller. This year we are going without.

My main concern about going stroller-less isn't their legs getting tired. I'm going to miss a big place to stash our sweatshirts, snacks, drinks, souveniers, etc.! Guess I'll have to learn to travel lighter!

We used a stroller for a good while with our kids - I really think it contributed to the fact that we NEVER experienced a single Disney whine-a-thon, melt-down or tantrum. I always feel so sorry for the poor exhausted kids melting down. I am tired after a day at Disney - and I don't have tiny legs and am not so close to the hot ground!

When the kids were old enough to reason with, we simply offered them $$ on a gift card for the daily stroller rental fee. They could either get a stroller or be willing to walk and get a little $ for a stuffed animal or vinylmation or something. That way they were walking by choice and never had a bad attitude. After the first trip sans stroller, the deal was off.

My kids had strollers up to four. At five, no mas. We did have to move a little bit more slowly, but they were none the worse for wear. It was useful to get Mom and Dad to slow down, truth be told...

I guess I am a sucker lol. DS is now 8. When we went last summer (he was 7 then) he still had a stroller. Don't get me wrong, I tried to make him walk, but there is a point at which the whining about the walking makes the trip miserable for both him, and the rest of us, so on the 2nd day of the trip, I got the stroller.

The previous year, DD's friend came along. She was 15, and had never done Disney World. A couple of days into the trip the shoes which she said were plenty comfortable enough for walking, had created some serious blisters on her feet. We got her fixed up with some mole skin, but she was pretty miserable. I wound up with her riding in the stroller, and my son on her lap :lmao:

That was a *bit* more than 50 lbs I was pushing around :rotfl::lmao::rotfl:

Now, at 8 years old, I firmly believe that my son is getting too old to be riding in a stroller, plus I've got a ruptured disc in my back, and pushing him around isn't getting any easier. I am HOPING that this year we will manage to ween him off it.
I'd get him medically evaluated. A kid that old who whines about having to walk either has some kind of medical issue or needs to be told to shut the hell up. I'm thinking he may have a foot problem or some kind of medical issue.

Mom, you cannot be pushing around an 8 year old with your ruptured disk!! Nor a 15 year old! :faint:

You are TOO KIND!

Tell these people to walk or stay in the room. No weaning, no injuring yourself. NO MORE PUSHING LARGE PEOPLE AROUND!

He is way too old to be weaned into walking. Just tell him. I'd do it before you leave. "You are 8 years old. Either you walk or you don't go. I will not push you. I couldn't if I wanted to - my back hurts. So go to your room, think it over, make a decision. Do you want to go to parks and walk or do you want to stay in the room? I have to know so I know how many tickets to buy."

If this fails, insist on putting him in a stroller when picking him up from school. That ought to end his desire to ride in strollers.

The fact that your child wants to be pushed is not a good enough reason to do further damage to your back!!!

Sorry...I know it's really none of my business. I truly don't care if people want to push around large people in strollers. But, my God, you shouldn't be injuring yourself. That's crazy!

Just tell me to shut up and mind my own beezwax. ::yes::

Couldn't have said it better myself! :thumbsup2

Seriously, "weaning" an 8 year old from riding in a stroller?? That is beyond ridiculous. I have an 8 year year old DD and she would be horrified at the idea of riding in a stroller, at WDW or anywhere else! Yikes.

Last time we went I did not use a stroller during the day. In the evening I would let them if we had been at the park all day without a break. They were 5 and 6 at that time. They walked most of the time, some evenings we didn't have to get one, some evenings we did.

This year they will be 8 and 9 so definitely no stroller.

EVERY kid is different. Each has their own disposition, temperment, tolerance, and endurance...(I have been a teacher for 8 years, and I know from experience) Do WHATEVER is best for YOUR kids! Have a great trip!

We did strollers til 7...then there are plenty of benches for resting.
I really loved not having to find strollers after rides it really frees up a lot of your time in the parks. So I was very glad to be done with strollers.

When we did use one...in 2005 I rented the disney blue strollers, but quickly found that was overkill and we just did the umbrella stroller for the next few years. That said...I am darned glad to be done with it.:thumbsup2

There are so many variables, it's really impossible to pin an age on the time to stop using one.

Its so dependent upon your touring style, the child's ability to hold up under the rigors of theme park visits, safety, and all the other reasons previously stated. If you aren't sure, just test the waters by having them try walking but bring along an umbrella stroller or be prepared to grab a rental if needed.

There are no hard & fast answers to your question. I recommend doing whatever makes for the maximum enjoyment of all in your party

This.

For a commando day 12-16 hours, I'd rent a stroller thru age 6 as a general guideline. Of all the parks too, I think Epcot is the most walking, so if you will get one for some, but not all parks, I'd say Epcot would be the park to get a stroller.

ASA-F'n-P!

I hate, hate, hate having to deal with strollers, and thank my lucky stars my children stopped using them years ago.

My wife's sister and family brought a folding one along when we went together, and more often than not, neither their 5 year old nor their 3 old use used. It just ended up being a pain in the butt for one of us to haul around with nobody in while the children walked.

We used a stroller up until age 6. And that was for my niece, during a quick 4 day visit, who walked like a turtle. In all honestly the stroller was for the rest of us as much as for her. It allowed her to look around all she wanted (which was what was making her walk so slow, she wanted to SEE everything) and it allowed the rest of us to walk at a normal pace.

My daughter is 6 and still rides in the stroller. I have a double stroller so they both ride. She will probably be able to ride in it size/weight wise until she's at least 8.

My DH and I were just talking about this. Our son is 6. The last time we used a stroller was when were went to WDW when he was 5. The last time before that was when he was 4 and went to WDW. Bascially, our son hasn't used a stroller in years...except when we go to WDW.

Over the years and trips to WDW, my DH has made adjustments to the stroller so it fits him better. Also, depending on our day/plan we might not take it with us.

We are going again in May, he'll still be 6. I'm wanting to take it and promise to leave it (trash it) before we return. Last trip! (Let's see if the DH will agree with even taking it).

We used a stroller for dd5 and plan to get one for this summer (6). Its hot and she gets tired. Plus the shade and storage work. Why anyone cares if someone else uses a stroller is beyond me
