We're thinking about doing the afternoon sailing. Just wondering if anyone has done this (or the sunset cruise). I'm sure my boys will have a great time just being on the boat, but is it worth it??

I Had mentioned this before - the Western Union has been around since before I was born - I understand it has been restored to the wonderful schooner she once was - all the children in Key West have at least gone once on the schooner and to us it was a special treat since it did belong to the Western Union and it repairs cables between Key West and Cuba - my uncle was a delivery boy for WU in the very early 40's and when I was allowed to go with him, my reward was going on the WU for a quick ride around our island - Do I think your children will enjoy it --YES I DO - I believe knowing the history behind her will help in making a report for school - this is just my feelings but then maybe I am partial.

I would definately recommend the WU. My family rented out the entire schooner for my sister and fiance, for their rehearsal dinner cruise. What a wonderful way to start off your marriage. We did it for the sunset cruise. It is relaxing and what a sight if you go for the sunset. I definately would do it again.

Thanks for the input!

Shirley - I did read your posts a while back about the WU. I'll have to make sure I get some info on the history of the ship to talk to my boys about!

May I say one of the most memorable excursions from our August 17 Western Cruise was the evening sunset cruise aboard the Schooner Western Union. We enjoyed the great interaction with the captain and crew, always willing to answer any and all questions. Once we cleared the dock anyone that wanted to assist the crew in raising the main sail was forwadred the opportunity to do so. Once underway the boat glided across the ocean at a leisurely pace.

There was a local muscian aboard that played some very well known sailing songs on his guitar as he sang a boastful tune. The overall pace of the excursion was so relaxed you aften forgot that there was a reason you were onboard. The sunset was amazing as promised and as we headed back to port many of us onboard wished that the Magic would stay in port so we could sail at night on the star gazer cruise.

We are planning a visit to Key West later this year and we have already made the collective decision to make plans to take the night cruise. Can't wait to get back to Old Key West.
