Has anyone taken the route through Cleveland rather than the "normal" route
through PA (RT 79) to VA, WVA, NC, SC, GA, etc.? We are thinking of driving down in late Jan. Any info would be appreciated.
I presume you mean I-90 to Cleveland and then south on I-71 to Columbus and Cincinnati, picking up I-75 there to Florida. I've driven on those roads, though not all in one trip. It would appear you're trying to avoid I-79 to Charleston, WV followed by I-77 to Charlotte and I-26 to I-95. What is your reasoning? Either route works. If you drop a ruler on an atlas page between Buffalo and Orlando the I-79/I-77 routing stays closest to the straight line meaning it's shorter. Another advantage to this latter route is that it gets you closer to the coast quicker which means a few degrees warmer which means in January a slightly lesser chance of snow.
That's a good thought and something to watch for as your departure date gets close at hand. The I-75 routing gets you some mountains too between Lexington, KY and Chattanooga, TN.
I guess the best thing to do is leave your options open and then make the routing decision the day before you depart. If it looks like the faster route could have icy conditions or snow and the slightly longer route does not, then you've got a good backup plan. If you're planning on spending a night enroute, book one room on each routing now as long as it's something you can cancel and then cancel the one you don't need the day before you leave.

Good advice! I've heard from friends that it's always good to make sure you book a room at a hotel/motel when driving that far. There could be a good chance the hotel may not have any vacancy if you do not have ressies. Don't want to keep driving while you are fatigued.
