We bought some of the 5 mile handheld radios. Anyone know how far 5 miles gets you at WDW? Does that make any sense? LOL

I guess I don't know how big the parks are and how far apart they are.

We are staying at BC and dh has a conference at tht SW/D so I was hoping to take ds to a park while dh is in his conference and then he can radio me when he is finished and can join us.

Our cells didn't work at all down there last year :(

THanks!

The parks are too far apart to use them between parks. You may be able to use them between the S/D and Epcot, but I wouldn't count on it for sure. I'm pretty sure that it's less than 5 miles even at the furthest point, but there is a lot of stuff in between the two points that could cause interference.

We bought some nice 5mile range walkie talkies that worked well from the busses just outside the park at MK to the castle, but that was about as far as they would stretch. Alot of you range ability is affected by the traffic of other radios and the amount of buildings, trees, rides and stuff in the way. Mickey

We have some walkies that worked from MK to WL. I thought that was pretty good.

DH won some really nice radios last year through work.. We were so excited to use them. We could not find an open frequency to use. Constantly hearing "Mary, are you there?!" andy many others. How much do you have to spend, not to be squashed by everyone else in the parks? Don't ask me what kind they are because I can't remember. (senior moment ya know!):D

Lynn!! :)

We use those radios in the parks all the time! :) I've never had a problem getting a frequency that's clear, and they usually work from a pretty far distance. I bet they might work for you guys. :) At least give it a try. ;)

Sorry but I think cell phones are the way to go. No worry about distance or others on the channel.

Since we are on the topic.....

we used cell phones in WDW for the past two trips. we have service from Verison wireless. It worked well (some low coverage spots, but all in all, pretty darn good.)

Well, DH is convinced that when the contract for our phones is up, he wants to switch to Nextel. (mostly for the direct connect advantage.)

Does anyone know how well (or not) Nextel's coverage in WDW is? (anyone have luck or not using it there?)

(if i don't get noticed here perhaps this would be more effective as a new thread. - i'll give this a shot first.)

I was wondering about that Nextel Direct Conncect as well. I would LOVE that since most of my cell calls are to my dh anyway.

I have Cingular I had virtually NO service at DW last year. Dh has AT &T and his service was ok. Not great, but ok.

I would love to switch to Nextel, but dh's company provides his cell phone and they only use AT&T.

:(
