We all felt sick after Mission Space

Regarding Soarin'. I rode that when I was in DL last July (first time in California period).

That first (and only form of actual motion) lift off which brings you up to the level of the Screen got me a little a sick to my stomach. but once the show started, I was like wow this is beautiful, it kinda feels like you can just reach out and touch all of the beautiful scenary.

I rode it last December and I thought it was great. I was totally prepared to feel nauseated but I never did. I did exactly what they said, look straight ahead and don't look around and I was fine. In fact I may have read too much about it because when I got off I thought, this is it? Where's the nausea?

My DH and DD- 8 just rode MS in May and LOVED it!! She is a major thrill seeker and we have let her ride rides as soon as she is tall enough for them, She was on Splash, Space and Big Thunder at 5. She loves RocknRoll and TOT. She came out fine and wanted to ride MS again - DH was a bit nautious but not much and it didn't last. He waited a bit and went back and rode again with her and was fine the second time. My DS however is 11 and he didn't want to ride so I sat out with him - I also have clautrophobia so I am not sure how I would have done with the closed space on the ride but I may try it next time we go back.

The first time I went on it was with my DD who was 5 at the time. She loved it.

:sad2: I felt like I was about 5 seconds away from blacking out on Mission: Space. I can totally feel the OP's pain. I never got motion sick, but I got off the ride completely bawling. Thank goodness everyone ignored me, because I would have been so embarrassed to get fussed over b/c I was crying. I have never been that scared in my life. I will NEVER ride MS again!

I went on it 4 times last year. I love the feeling of take off. For me the Ride is over once you get through takeoff because the rest of the ride is boring... That is my only complaint about it. However, I did get motion sickness, but I blame myself for going on it three times in a row rather than the ride itself. Best realistic launch simulator I have ever been on... SHHHH don't tell anyone it was the ONLY one have been on. ;)

The ride itself was wonderful. I didn't feel sick until I got off. It lasted about 2 hours. I doubt that I will ride it though in August.

I've also read that the ride was toned down, dropping it from around 4 G's to 2 G's. Additionally you will get more G's from RNR. If you read the press, they state that 7 people were taken to the hospital, but continued reading shows that its been about a year since anyone had to go..

The company that designed Mission:SPACE quotes 2.5G sustained as a capability of their design. The ride has been brought down to about 1.5G.

The changes were done around the time of opening. I heard a rumor from a CM that used to work at Epcot that there were some long term maintenance concerns so they toned it down even more to prevent issues.

The most Gs a shuttle astronaut experiences is during ascent. That is about 3Gs

You may experience more Gs on RnR, but it is not sustained and it is through the head to tail axis of your body. On Mission:SPACE, you feel the force on the chest to back axis. Something we are not used to.

I love the ride, but yes the intensity isn't for everyone. And it's a shame that child died after riding it. Sure anyone over 44 inches can ride it, but 4 years is so very young. I can't imagine my 4-yr old niece riding it nor would I let her.

Sorry you didn't have a good experience. :(

Well considering I get sick if I turn my office chair around too quick, I guess I won't be standing in line for MS.. LOL :teeth:

However, my son-in-law LOVES that stuff, so I'm sure he'll give it a try.. :flower:

I felt a bit nausaus (like when I was pregnant) because I did not eat that day. I had a glass of Sprite (Ginger Ale is better) and I was fine.

Does spinning upset sinuses? Is there a doctor in the house?

I'm not a doctor, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I do have sensitive sinuses and allergies.

Spinning, in and of itself, won't affect sinuses, but the rapid shifts in gravity could affect you if your sinuses are acting up when you ride, just the way that bending down to tie your shoes, or lieing down and standing up rapidly can cause the various fluids in your head to shift around.

I have not ridden MS with sinus or allergy symptoms, so it has never bothered me, although once when I rode it twice in rapid succession I did get a mild headache for about 20 minutes afterward.

I Googled "motion sickness" and came up with a lot of pages that explain its symptoms and treatments:

My Friends still make fun of how green i was when i got off Mission Space.
I rode it first thing in the morning.
Will i ride it again.....no.

Just wanted to again post prayers for the family that lost their child.

I am "old" according to my children (54), and CANNOT ride tea-cups any longer. Tiltawhirls were my favorite when I was younger. Despite these troubles with spinning rides, I love Mission Space, and appreciate it as my only opportunity to experience a little bit of what a space launch might be like. I can ride it twice in a row, and then get the feeling a third time would do me in. DH could ride it all day long with no trouble.

Do you know when they changed that?? ::MickeyMo
I believe it was early on. They received feedback, then eventually reduced "G" forces. The news talks about 7 people going to the hospital, but most of these were in 2003. The last reported incident was a year ago, until this unfortunate accident.

The nice California Supreme Court voted 4-3 this week to now catagorize amusement park rides as mass transit, with all the restrictions that come along with it. It will be interesting to see what fallout happens from this.

I question the people who are questioning a four year old riding this ride. If your child meets the height requirements and wants to ride, why should you stop him or her? (Unless you have a child like my six year old who starts crying in the elevator sometimes because she is afraid that it is going to go too fast). My thrill seeking four year old did everything that he could do on this trip, and he loved it all. The only thing that he did not like was Beauty and the Beast because he got bored and Indiana Jones at times because it was so loud. Anyway, he loved Mission Space. My mother rode it and said that it was the only ride she has ever ridden that made her feel that sick. I read the warnings and knew it was not for me because I do get motion sickness.

but MS did bother me for about 15 minutes afterward. However I did enjoy the ride and would like to go on again but this time im probably going to take some aspirin afterwards... :earboy2:

I heard today that this decision will now "open the way" for a woman who was injured at Disneyland 5 years ago to proceed with a lawsuit. I can't believe this would be possible :confused3 but apparently it could be.

My experience on Mission Space was mixed. The CM actually talked my DH out of riding it since he was in a wheelchair. I forgot the Bonine that morning but I only felt a little queasy. I was glad when it was over. The take off was fun though. My DS loved it and wanted to do it again. I must say I was shocked someone could have such major reactions to this ride. I just feel Disney does not have the crazy sickening rides like say Six Flags. I get sick on the tilt a whirl and don't do it without bonine but MS only bothered me for about 30 min. I did keep my eyes forward and focused on the screen.

This is VERY scary. It is a shame that the government feels that it has to take the fun out of everything by regulating it. At some point, people need to take responsiblity for themselves, and not so sue happy. I LOVE coasters, and if this government intervention over all parts of our lives keeps up, we will truly be living in a George Orwell society with no fun, whatsoever!

STOP the MADNESS!!!!

:guilty: We are a family of 4, my husband age 52, Me (Mom) 51, college daughter 24, and teen daughter 16. We all rode Mission Space about 4 pm. last week for the first time. I hated it. We all hated it.
You're in this little compartment that's supposed to resemble an astronaut's seat. The actual ride wasn't fun for any of us at all. It just felt awful. I suppose we were upside down for a good deal of the ride, because that is probably how we felt such intense pressure on our faces (supposed to feel like 'blast-off'. There are even paper bags next to you, in the ride, in case you get sick on the ride.
I just feel like warning everybody. It just made me mad to go on a Disney ride and then feel sick for the rest of the day until going to sleep at night. My husband and I both had terrible headaches :badpc: and sinus pressure in the middle of our foreheads for the rest of the day and night. My 2 daughters were able to shake it off after a few hours. But none of us felt like eating dinner or even snacks.
None of us will ever go on this ride again, and we are not sissy riders. We all do Tower of Terror and Rock'n Roller Coaster over and over. We even do Star Tours and it only bothers us for about 15 minutes afterwards. But I just think Mission Space is a horrible ride. We had such high hopes for that day at Disney, and this ride ruined our day.
:guilty:
I would like to hear from anyone about your experience. Does anyone ever go on it again? Does anyone really enjoy it?

I have the exact same feeling after riding It's a Small World. I always feel the need to puke when I get off that ride. And it stays with me all day as that bloody song keeps playing over and over in my head.

I want to warn people about It's a Small World. That ride is the DEVIL!!!!!

:rotfl: :cool1: :rotfl2: :confused3
