I will be going to Disney this December and have a few questions regarding the kennels..

-I saw some people wrote that the dogs are allowed on the "tram", is this referring to the WDW transportation buses?

-Are the dogs laying on a wire/mesh cage floor? Our dog is 55 lbs so we would be getting her the large cage. If we can bring her bed or Disney provides one for us, that would be awesome since the wire flooring tends to be harsh on dogs feet.

-Do each of the kennels at the parks have adequate space to walk dogs? Or are we basically walking them in the parking lots? I don't feel comfortable walking my dog in the lots since that is just an accident waiting to happen!

-If we leave her at Animal Kingdom, is there any way to get there after the park closes? (since AK always closes so early in the evening)

We are staying at All-Star Movies and have park hoppers, so getting around to the parks wherever we leave her won't be an issue!

Hello there! I can answer some of your questions for you!

Keep in mind, the only kennel we have used is at the TTC kennel, and it is MORE convienant than the other locations IMO. SO I will base my answers on that kennel.

The floors are solid! Just the doors are cage like. And yes, bring your babies bed with you! If not, all your baby will be able to lay on is a towel on a hard flooring. You will have alot of room in the big kennel, so a big bed will fit. You can also bring some toys/things from home your girl likes.

When you walk your baby, you will have plenty of green grass to walk on at the TTC location. Look on the first page and you will get an idea of the grassy area. THere is a major road right next to a side of the walking area, but you will be fine cause she will be leashed.

Unfortunately, only service dogs are allowed on WDW Transportation. NO other dogs allowed. You will have to get her to and from the kennel by a car.

As far as getting in after the AK closes, I dont know about that kennel or how they operate, but at the TTC kennel, you can always call WDW security to let you in. The kennels stay open an hour AFTER the MK closes and they open an hour BEFORE the MK opens.

The reason why it is so convienent at the TTC kennel, is that when you are at a resort, you can hop a bus to the TTC and walk right over to the kennel and visit your dog. And if you are hopping to Epcot from the MK, you switch at the TTC anyway, and you can hop right on over to the kennel and see your girl then too!
That kennel is very clean, the staff are super friendly and its a nice rest from the parks too when you want to get a break for a few minutes. :)

Dont forget to call for ressies! :)

. . . except for "service animals", no dogs on buses or trams

-Are the dogs laying on a wire/mesh cage floor? Our dog is 55 lbs so we would be getting her the large cage. If we can bring her bed or Disney provides one for us, that would be awesome since the wire flooring tends to be harsh on dogs feet.
. . . no wire
. . . you can bring all sorts of dog items

-Do each of the kennels at the parks have adequate space to walk dogs? Or are we basically walking them in the parking lots? I don't feel comfortable walking my dog in the lots since that is just an accident waiting to happen!
. . . room to walk the dog

-If we leave her at Animal Kingdom, is there any way to get there after the park closes? (since AK always closes so early in the evening)
. . . open for 1-hr after park closes

We are staying at All-Star Movies and have park hoppers, so getting around to the parks wherever we leave her won't be an issue!
. . . where will you keep the dog overnight?
. . . can't be in hotel room

I have merged these two threads on the Kennels stuff cause ... well darn it.. it makes more sense together.

I strongly recommend one of the 24 hour kennels linked on the previous page - because as noted - you may not have your dogs stay with you at the resort and any attempts to circumvent that may get you evicted from Disney resorts.

Why?

Because of allergies among other guests who may go into your room after and because it's Disney policy. :)

While I recognize the closeness of many owners to their pets, I strongly suggest that if there is ANY other option for your pet besides the trip to Disney and booking a stay in a kennel, it should be very carefully considered before taking your pet to Disney. This is my own suggestion and of course, every pet owners situation is unique and the ultimate decision on what works best, for you and your pet, is yours.

The obvious exception to this thinking include a number of 'off-site' properties that do welcome pets with their owners.

Enjoy.

Oh I dont think thats what they were implying...just which park kennel to put their dog in!;)

Thank you for the great info! I always kennel my dogs at home (2 boxers). But have been curious if the kennels at WDW would work for us. Now I know for certain they would not. :sad2: but it is better to know now, than be surprised at the last moment.

Oh im sorry to hear that! The kennels are great for me and DH. WIth no pet sitters and no reliable kennel here in our SMALL town, they work great for us! :)

this is our 1st disney trip with my new buddy boy freckles! he is a dashund and yes, we have great pet motels here, i don't know if i can go for 7 nights without seeing him. so, i was thinking about the TTC kennel. i would definately go see at least twice a day and that way i wouldn't have to worry so much about him. your info is great and i've learned so much today! i know i need to go ahead and reserve his kennel, cause we will be there in 2 months. do you go ahead and pay at check in?

Yes, you can pay at check in. And the great thing about the TTC kennel is you can pay extra and have the staff walk Freckles in between your visits!

Have a great trip!!! ;)

let me ask you this, you pay the $21 a night and they do walk the dog twice and feed them twice, right? is this what you do? do you drive to the kennel? if i were to leave a park and want to go over there, which bus do i get on, the ttc? if i pay the lower price, and for some crazy reason i don't get over there but once that day, do they take him out and does he just go in the kennel?

We are new dog owners, so we've never used kennels anywhere. I have a few (ok a lot  of questions).

How do the kennels charge? I see daycare rates and overnight rates. We're staying at AKV. Do we just pay the overnight rate for each dog? Or do we pay for overnight and daycare for each dog? Are there multi-dog discounts?

How far in advance do you make ressies for the kennels? And what are the cancellation policies if I decide to leave them with their vet?

Which kennel would be the best for us? We are staying at AKV. We'll have a car so we can get to any of them easily. We want the full service (kennel walks them twice, etc.).

We have a 5 year old rescue Malti-Tzu (11 pounds) and a 1 yr old Maltese (5 pounds). Would they be kenneled together or separately? If I requested they be together, but they needed to be separated, would the staff do that? Sometimes the older one can get snippy with the younger one and I'm not sure how kennel stress would effect them.

And should we really be thinking about taking them with us? Or should we just find a kennel close to home? Facts to consider in your advice--Our car trip will be 9 hours each way so we can drive to Orlando and won't need to stop at a hotel along the way. The longest trip they've been on is 5 1/2 hours. They did fine; we stopped along the way at dog walks.
We want to take them because Malteses really bond to their people; don't know how they'd react if they didn't see us for a week.

Our first long car trip, we knew where all the dogwalks were in advance. We travel that way often. I don't know where they are from ATL to ORL except at Priesters. Any advice how to locate them while we drive down? How do we locate a hotel that takes dogs along the way just in case?

Any other advice for car trips?

Love all the info above from bamatigger. Believe it or not (considering the length of this post :rotfl2:), it really answered a LOT of my questions.

I think the 21 a nite is just the boarding fee....walks are extra. If you are in the MK and you want to hop to Epcot, all you do is take the monorail to the TTC and then walk right over to the kennel! Then after, hop on the monorail to Epcot since that is where you switch anyway. If you are leaving DHS or AK, you can take the bus to the TTC and boom, you are at the kennel. :)

It is MANDANTORY that you go visit your pets TWICE a day. They WILL NOT walk them for you if you dont pay the extra walking fee. And yes, if your baby has to go and no one walks him, then yep, he will potty in the kennel. :( . Take extra blankets/potty pads just in case and you can even give your dog a bath there. I always take those disposable dog wipes with me in case my boys have an accident or whatever.

Hello! There are no multi dog discounts, and you will pay the rate if you are staying at a WDW resort. I think it is just a base price of 21.00 for day and night. That is for EACH dog.

How far in advance do you make ressies for the kennels? And what are the cancellation policies if I decide to leave them with their vet?

Depends on when you are going. I always book mine about 2-3 months in advance, and 4-5 before a major holiday weekend. The policy is just to call and cancel in a timely manner, you dont pay for it until you get there and check in.

Which kennel would be the best for us? We are staying at AKV. We'll have a car so we can get to any of them easily. We want the full service (kennel walks them twice, etc.).

Your best bet is the TTC kennel (next to the MK and Epcot monorail station). That is the full service kennel. YOu can take car, or monorail to the TTC and walk right to the kennel.

We have a 5 year old rescue Malti-Tzu (11 pounds) and a 1 yr old Maltese (5 pounds). Would they be kenneled together or separately? If I requested they be together, but they needed to be separated, would the staff do that? You can request a bigger "suite" for them if you want to keep them together. And just tell the staff to please keep an eye on their behavior and if they are bickering or whatever, if they can move one of them to another suite if they have one available.

And should we really be thinking about taking them with us? Or should we just find a kennel close to home? Well, that is debateable really. IT really depends on what kind of services are available at your local kennels. Kenneling dogs are STRESSFUL no matter where you put them, remember that. But I know that some peoples circumstances are different. Like me and DH's situation...We have 2 vets in town and they have SUPER SMALL kennels and only ONE time will the employees walk the dogs. And on weekends, they could care less about going and walking dogs. Secondly, I have NO ONE i can trust in my home to care for my dogs. (my sister when she is available is all). My dogs have to be left inside when it rains or is super cold or super hot, so they need to be let out frequently and then at nite, they sleep inside the house (I know, they are spoiled!!) So, getting anyone to watch my dogs is a hassle. I did have one "friend" of mine watch them once, and her hethen kids ended up spilling chocolate on my new furniture, scratching my new tables, spilling RED kool aid on my new LIGHT BEIGE carpet and just totally destroying my house and one kid hit my little 4 pound yorkie in the head on purpose!! So no way in heck will she ever watch my dogs again and to boot i even paid her WELL for 3 days. So when we have to take our 3 boys, we do. They are MUCH better at home in their own environment I know, but when we take them, we go to the kennels about 5 times a day to walk them. (My oldest Pom DOES not do well with other people, so we HAVE to walk him!) SO ideally, if you could get someone YOU TRUST that could come to your house to pet sit, that would be best. Of course we all know that! But, if not and you have to take them, just make them as comfy as possible in their new environment. Bring something from home that they love and toys, etc. ALot of folks will tell you things like "why do you take your pets on vacation, and I would never kennel them...etc etc...but some folks situations are not ideal and you have to do what you have to do for your animals no matter what. So, (MAN, IM LONGWINDED! lol) just do what you have to do to make sure your dogs are safe, loved and well taken care of.
Our first long car trip, we knew where all the dogwalks were in advance. We travel that way often. I don't know where they are from ATL to ORL except at Priesters. Any advice how to locate them while we drive down? How do we locate
a hotel that takes dogs along the way just in case?

We drive from Southeast ALabama to Orlando and its a 6 hour drive.....all rest areas have a dog walking area, most stores or gas stations have grassy areas that you can walk them. You can google map the stops I believe. I really dont worry about where I walk my dogs, (I clean up their messes) UNLESS there is a sign that says NO PETS. Then I go elsewhere. If there are NO SIGNS, then I walk them. ANd Im courteous and clean my mess up and I stay away from cars, traffic, etc. Walking dogs will not hurt anything. :) So just go and walk them whereever (unless there is a no pets sign! LOL). And dont forget, all MOTEL 6 will let you have your dogs! :)
Any other advice for car trips?

My boys love car trips, but my middle Pom Max gets really queasy, so I take those puppy pads and spread them in the back of the blazer in case they have an accident. I always take their milkbones, and easy treats to give them. Also, I get those Rubbermaid containers for their water drinking while on the road. Open it up, let em drink, and close it again! Easy. I also let them lay on their own beds from home and we stop about every 2 hours and walk them to let em stretch their legs. :)
Love all the info above from bamatigger. Believe it or not (considering the length of this post :rotfl2:), it really answered a LOT of my questions.

Thanks so much! :) If you do keep em at the TTC kennel, ask for LENORA...she is awesome! She really pays good attention to the animals and she is so nice anc caring! She has taken care of my boys alot. When Rascal (my yorkie) was like 13 weeks old, she would take him and tote him around in her shirt pocket! It was soooooo cute! Anymore questions, just ask!

Are there any updates to the new kennel?

Rates?

When can we start making reservations (December vacation)?

Thanks Bamatigger for taking the time to answer all my questions. It was a real help. :)

I've got one more. My Disney Card Reward newletter says that FW has a new dog park. Does anyone know if you use the FW kennel can you also use the dog park?

:)
