this is a great thread idea - trying to decide if going to bring 4lb maltese bc i feel like i'm being neglectful if i leave her but then again she'd be staying in a kennel which she's never done ... ever in her life!!! she's 6.5y/o.

Thank you! Well, if you do have someone reliable to watch her and you trust them, then by all means do that. BUT, if you are like some pet parents that DO NOT have anyone to watch them, then the kennels are your best bet!

For being 6 and a half and NEVER been kenneled before, then your baby might have some issues. Mine are used to it, thats why they do so well. But, hopefully you have a great pet sitter.

And I did ask my vet's receptionist the other day how many times they walk the dogs on the weekends when they are kenneld, and she told me ONCE A DAY. I was like...ARE YOU KIDDING ME....so thats why I take my boys. SO in hindsight, there are just some "places" who just dont take good care of kenneled animals. :scared1:

Anyone have any new info on the new kennel? I read in a news alert from some Disney site that it's scheduled to open "summer".

It might be wise to try to kennel her at a local kennel overnight or do some type of doggie daycare before taking her on a longer trip and kenneling her for the first time. This would give you some insight on how she would do and she would get used to being in a different setting for only short periods of time.

This is the only thing I have found updating the new pet resort:

Disney Best Friends Pet Care Center Update

Slated for a late-summer opening, a full-service luxury pet care facility on Bonnet Creek Parkway across from Disney’s Port Orleans Resort will provide a comfortable home-away-from-home for Fido, Frisky and all their pet pals! The one-of-a-kind facility will be able to accommodate up to 270 dogs in a variety of standard and luxury suites, some with private outdoor patios and play yards. The separate “Kitty City” pavilion will be able to house up to 30 cats in two- and four-story cat condos. A special room is also available for the boarding of “pocket pets,” Including pet hamsters and birds.
The facility, to be operated by Best Friends Pet Care, will comprise more than 17,000 square feet of air-conditioned indoor space plus 10,000 square feet of covered outdoor runs and play areas. It will replace the five existing pet care facilities throughout Walt Disney World Resort and will be open to both Walt Disney World Resort guests and visitors staying off-property.

I guess it will still be late summer....I dont know. I will ask about it when I go there end of this month!

Thanks for the post on the new pet center. I didn't realize it was replacing all the existing ones. Well, that's one less decision to make since we go in the Fall.

So it sounds like none of the current WDW kennels have fenced-in areas to walk the dogs, correct?

Any guesses on whether or not the new one will?

Thanks. And thank you for this very helpful thread!!

Hello Lisa! Thank you for the compliment! ;)

I dont THINK that the Epcot/DHS/AK kennels have a fenced in area. Someone correct me if Im wrong. Im not sure about FW kennel as well.:confused3

I know the one at the TTC does NOT, but you are supposed to have your dog leashed when walking, so it shouldnt be much of a problem with no fence. I do however, wish it was fenced in due to the high amount of traffic off that main road by the TTC kennel.

I know the new kennel will have a fenced in area....Rumor has it that the dogs will be able to go in and out (kinda like a doggy door) from their suite and be able to roam within their own little fenced in area! That will be awesome!:cloud9:

Im going next week and I am going to inquire about the new kennel. :) I will keep you updated!

I know what you mean! My babies are always walked on a leash but I worry with different surroundings and them maybe getting nervous what could happen. Our 8 year old golden who we just lost to cancer was a little escape artist with her collar sometimes!! Fortunately we could tell when she was just thinking about it!

Thanks for the update. We are also looking into offsite villas that accept dogs as an option. Not my first choice, but if it makes the trip happen I am keeping an open mind to it!

I know that the AK/DHS/ and Epcot kennels do not- as well as the previously confirmed TTC. I haven't been to the FW kennel so I don't know on that one. Epcot has a lot of area to walk the dog in- there are lots of grassy areas around it. DHS has a strip about 12 inches wide and about 30 feet long that has bushes and a little grassy and a smally bushy hilly area- our dog did not like trying to find a place to go here. We haven't used the AK kennel but have seen it- I don't even know where other than walking out to the parking lot they have for you to even walk the dog. I try to avoid the DHS and AK kennels unless we are visiting only that park and for less then 5-6 hours.

We just returned from 7 nights at Disney and used the FW kennel for the first time, we have used the Epcot kennel in the past. We switched because FW has easier access. I am sorry to report that we are very unhappy with the FW kennel. We picked up our mini dachshund on Saturday morning (5/22/10) and noticed her itching like crazy, but she hopped in the car and seemed ok. When we returned home that night I was giving her a bath and I saw red marks all over her and she was bleeding from the itching in several places. I grabbed the flea comb hoping for the best.... she is covered in fleas  She is on a flea prevention medicine and she did not have fleas going in! I know this is a risk in kennels but she was bleeding and whimpering and no one called us during our vacation or mentioned anything as we checked her out. It is not the fact that she got the fleas that has me upset it is the fact that she was bleeding and covered in red marks and they ignored it. I think we will be looking into pet sitters from now on.

Oh my gosh...im so sorry that happend to your baby! Did you call and file a complaint? Cause I sure would! That is UNACCEPTABLE! Is your baby ok now?

I hope you will place a call and complain about that. Not only did it happen to your dog, then it could happen to another one! And then, them not calling or telling you about it? That would not make me happy!

Well, I asked a CM about the new kennel and he told me it SHOULD be open by December of 2010 and from what he has heard, it is going to to be really nice.
So, thats all the info I got!

Correct me if I'm wrong please but isn't it true that once Best Friends took over the kennels the staff are not WDW castmembers but employees of Best Friends? I have been using the kennels for years but haven't since the "new" company took over :sad2:

We were given a comment card with our check out materials and I typed up a letter and sent it off last week.

Thanks for asking about Lucy, she is doing much better after a trip to the vet where she needed antibiotics because some of the skin had become infected. We also had to "bug bomb" the house and I've washed her bedding everyday for the last week in hot water..... hopefully no more fleas :headache:

Yes, that is correct. Back in the day, there were regular CM's. But now they are Best Friends employees.

Well, as I said, I have used the kennels when it was owned by WDW and BF, and both were/are great. Of course now that LUCY wasnt taken care of, Im not a fan of the FW site. :sad2:

You are kidding? :scared1:, your Lucy needed antibiotics after she returned? That just makes my heart break. :(

Here I am such a promoter for these kennels and then they treat your Lucy like that. Im so mad.

I do have to defend the TTC kennel tho, they are great.

But I do wonder, do you think with the wooded area around the kennel had anything to do with all those fleas?:confused3 And im NOT taking up for the treatment that Lucy got, cause there IS NO DAMN EXCUSE for the employees not to notice an itchy, blotched fur and bleeding animal! :headache:I just wonder why all the fleas there?

Im glad you gave us that report.:surfweb: I would suggest that you go to the best friends website and EMAIL them..there is a form you can type in your comments! Something has to be done!:sad2:

Post a pic of your Lucy for us! Get well Lucy!:lovestruc

I was thinking the same thing about the woods in the area of FW because we have used the Ecpot kennel several times and I also had been promoting them on the DIS.

I sent the letter to their "Customer Relations Department" at the address they give on their comment forms, I will check out the web page and sumbit it there also.
