WDW Facts! Did you know...

Phone Firsts

Vista-United Telecommunications, a partnership between The Walt Disney Co. and the United Telephone System, was the first commercial telephone company in the United States to install a fiber-optic cable system for regular service. Vista-United was also the first Florida system to establish a 911 emergency number.

Six-Shooter

Guides of the famous Jungle Cruise in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom fire off almost 631,000 rounds of ammunition per year. But don't worry, they're only blanks!

Both Robin Williams and Steve Martin were guides! I posted this one early in the thread.

Resorts

Big Gulp . . . It would take more than 20 million 12-ounce cans of Coca-Cola to fill one of the humongous Coke cups at the Home-Run Hotel in Disney's All-Star Sports Resort.

Tennis Anyone? . . . It would take nearly 9.5 million tennis balls to fill one of the tennis ball cans at Center Court Hotel in Disney's All-Star Sports Resort. That's enough to stretch from Walt Disney World to Key West.

World's Largest . . . Stormalong Bay, Disney's Beach Club Resort swimming area, holds 750,000 gallons of water, making it the largest sand-bottom pool in the world.

Five-Legged Goat . . . The mosaic mural in the fourth-floor lobby of Disney's Contemporary Resort was created in 1971 with 1,800 1-square-foot tiles and took 18 months to construct. Look closely: there's a five-legged goat facing the monorail track.

Music To Your Eyes . . . The musical staff notes across the registration desk at Disney's Port Orleans Resort spell out the first verse of "When the Saints Go Marching In."

Room Roulette . . . If you wanted to stay in all the guest rooms in all of the hotels and resorts currently open on Walt Disney World property (at a rate of one per night), it would take more than 61 years.

in soarin' there are two hidden mickeys (mickey on the golf ball and mickey during the fireworks part) and also two mickeys during the pre show (not including the mickey mouse hat and these are easy to spot) when the boy puts on his seat belt he is wearing a disneyland top with mickey on and trousers with mickey on
well the trousers one is kinda hard as i just checked it (found a video of the queue, pre show and ride of soarin' on the internet) because it is at the top right of the trousers

Did you know that Disney got the FAA to close the airspace above WDW after Sept 11th? This just adds to the magic as you don't even hear aircraft while on property. Man, you really are in another world!!!!
I haven't finished reading all this thread yet, but I just had to add something to this comment. When we were in the MK in 2003 we waiting for the Tiki Room watching the little pre-show thing they have and out of no where, we heard a loud, low flying jet. It sounded like a military plane and scared the heck out of us! We never did find out what it was, but it wasn't a fun sound to hear like that.

More Hidden Mickeys:

The Disney-MGM Studios offers one of the largest Hidden Mickeys. The Hollywood Plaza area and surrounding buildings in front of the Chinese Theater actually form a giant Mickey Mouse face when viewed from the air.

Mickey and several of his animated pals take on special roles in the Indiana Jones scene of The Great Movie Ride. They're cleverly disguised in period dress and hidden among the hieroglyphics in the Well of Souls.

Mickey also visits the 'underbelly of the city' in The Great Movie Ride, as two Hidden Mickeys are visible in the attraction's gangster scene. Mickey's famous ears can be spotted on a billboard and in a window above the bank.

I believe WDW has a height clearance with the FAA, however, every now and then a airplane, prop or helicopter goes into that airspace. If it was a fighter plane on government business, well, then they would take preference over WDW's request/policy.

Please read through the posts. A lot of these are really cool information that is good to have the kids learn while in the car or on a plane headed for WDW! :wizard:

I am trying. Some of these are very difficult to find. But well worth the effort.

Don't know if these have been posted or not....haven't read the whole thread but, here they are anyway......

When 20,000 Leauges Under The Sea was open at WDW and DL, Disney had the 5th largest submarine fleet in the world.

Walt Disney felt the need for the underground Utilidoors because he saw a CM dressed as a sherriff walking through Tommorowland at DL.

The MK is 1/3 the size of Epcot.

DL could fit inside KS in the AK.

Epcot opened 11 years to the day WDW opened to the public.

Some of the tiles in the mosaic in Cinderella Castle are pure gold.

It is not a WDW "request/policy." WDW is restricted airspace belwo 3000 feet, this actualy wen through congress to accomplish. However military planes and aircraft who request permission to fly over are allowed.

This facts are really interesting to read. I've learned quite a bit. :goodvibes Keep them coming!

You can also find both the map and satellite image of places in Disney World at maps.google.com.

To give it a try, the address of the Contemporary is 4600 North World Drive, Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

Did you know It is actually a post that was removed and what remains resembles a ring.

I heard differently. I heard that the ring was placed there before the haunted mansion was open because origanilly the attraction was going to be a walk through telling a spooky story about a young bride who was killed. The ring was supposed to be at the end of the story.

I think that's just a rumor that's been started to corroborate the story about the "ring". I've never heard anywhere reliable that HM was ever considered to be a walk-through.

Plus, if you've ever seen the "ring", you can tell it's not a ring. It doesn't look anything like a ring, it's not "staged" to look like a ring.

It looks like a hole with a brass "ring" around it, where a post or something would sit in.

It's a nice story, but I think that's all it is.

ok
on the snow scene of soarin' one skier didn't quite make the jump...
if you know what person it is then it just looks funnybut it is the last person you see in that scene he makes a jump across a rock at the top and then falls over

it took disney several months to get permission to fly a helecopter through yosemite national park because of airspsace

and also during the second scene of the ride on video (found it on the internet) there is this boy who says this thing which sounds like i wanna birdie
it's strange
