Ok ...I do know this is way OT but you guys are so great and helpful that I must ask. I have an old PC that has a folder that I need to transfer to my new PC. I called my computer system repair man and he said get a USB plug in and you will be able to transfer from one to the other. Is is self explanatory or do I need to know my stuff? Where do I get them?
Help...I am so :confused3 when it comes to my PC.
Thanks so much!!

I imagine they are talking about a USB flash drive..

I did a search on amazon for "usb drive".. and you can get them for around $25. It will act like a new drive when you plug it into your computer, then, you can just drag the files you want into it.

We have two of them here at our house, probably a friend or co-worker would have one you could borrow.

you should be able to find them at walmart, or staples, or best buy.. anywhere that sells computer supplies.

My sister just got a new computer, she had a few Word documents that she needed copied. I just copied them to a floppy, then put my external floppy in her new computer and saved it to her hard drive. She didn't have a floppy in her new computer and I mistakenly copied the data to a floppy instead of a cd. I just plugged the usb from the external floppy drive to her new computer that had the ports in the front.

Everyone should have at least 1 thumb drive or usb flash drive.

They are just so handy in transfering files . We have 4 or 5 around the house and got DD a 1GB for when she starts HS next year as well.

If you have an older version of Windows, I think you may have to install something for Windows to recognize the thumb drive. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, it should recognize it automatically.

Also, if your computer is older, you probably have the old USB connections. The new thumb drive will most likely be 2.0 compliant. You may get a warning that you are using a USB 2.0 device in a 1.0 machine. Don't worry, nothing is going wrong with your computer. It will work fine.

Just a few things to think about when you start to do this.

If you haven't done this before, it helps to have your Windows Explorer directory open when you plug in your thumb drive so that you can know what drive letter (L: Z: K: etc. for example) the new drive is.

If you have a newer computer, you probably have several USB drives and the various smart card readers for digital cameras and it can be a bit confusing what drive is what.

Boy I am so confused...my old PC does have the older USB. I can't figure any of it out. My new PC does everything so fast I can't tell what is being done. The first thing I need to do is figure out my old one...I wouldn't be so crazy about this except I need to get these files out tomorrow.

if the old PC is Windows 98 or Windows ME, make sure the USB flash drive has a driver installation program on CD/floppy. Otherwise, you won't be able to use the flash drive at all.

Does the old PC have floppy drive? Does the new PC have a floppy drive? IF both have floppy drives, that may be the easiest way to go. But if your files are larger than 1.44 mb each, this won't work.

Does the old PC have a CD burner? IF so, you can burn the folder on a CD and then transfer it that way.

Does the old PC have internet access? Does the new one have internet access? IF so, you can upload the file from the old PC to an online storage site that you can then get back from the new PC. http://www.mediafire.com lets you upload any kind of files with unlimited size. I've used them to transfer over 250mb of files to my sister. You can also use http://www.yousendit.com to send a large file via email. If the files are sensitive in nature and contains private information, you can zip it and password protect it (www.winzip.com) before sending the file.

There are many ways to transfer files. If you need more help, you can PM me.
