Want to Remote-Start Your Toyota With a Fob? That'll be $8 Per Month

Just get a Subaru and you won't have to worry about tire chains.
LOL. Tow truck drivers in the Sierra love Subarus. Nothing against the cars, but their driver's tend to think they are more capable than they really are in deep snow.

I must be missing something. Not sure why the towel wouldn't work. Lift it off and the ice and snow come off with it. They made special covers just for that purpose. https://www.amazon.com/Windshield-M...t=&hvlocphy=9032424&hvtargid=pla-842648170045
Cars get entirely coated in solid ice here sometimes. You wouldn’t even be able to get a grip of an edge of the towel without defrosting it. And if you did it would be like lifting another solid windshield off! And do you know how heavy snow can actually be? Even the stuff that looks nice and fluffy has some heft when your talking a foot or more.

Things are much different from what you see on TV, or in ads, or from the very small familial population you continually look to reference.

Things this thread has taught me:

1. Daily $5 coffees - acceptable, $8 subscriptions - against the laws of God
2. Large parts of North America should be closed in the winter and the people relocated to southern New Mexico and Arizona every winter.

Actually, I haven't asked any of my family in Canada. But when their parents were alive, they always had their cars in a garage at home.

Agreed. The Subarus do great in snow and help you climb hills. What most drivers fail to comprehend it does nothing to help you stop faster.

As a suburu owner, I DO know all those things. If you are a smart driver of any car you know that you need to take precautions when stopping. Driving l0l, especially in our part of the country. We have to deal with black ice, which is much more dangerous than snow or regular ice. It can't be seen and the roads usually look clear of any ice or snow. It usually builds up at traffic stops where there are alot of semi's or traffic who are stopped with motors running, of course. The exhaust is what freezes and is slippery and undetectable.
Suburu's do have alot of safety features built in, but you still have to drive smart.

1. Paying $5 a day for a beverage I can make at home will never be acceptable to me, but neither are subscriptions. I am a rebel, and very frugal, and try to avoid both.

2. Thank you for not sending the frozen people to Florida. We have enough Frozen people here . . .

I learned from this thread that everyone has their own way of doing things and it is the only right way. Glad to know I fit right in with that philosophy! My dad would be so proud . . .

Since retiring I'm not listening to the scanners anymore, but almost daily there was the Highway Patrol calling for a tow for a "white Subaru stuck in a snowdrift". Always a white Subaru, which I suspect means the driver is not a local resident but a skier, because I'm not sure I would want a white car in snow country.

Around here, in the shadow of Detroit where Subarus are relatively few and far between, it is the big 4WD pickups. I'm not sure if it is the 4WD or the tank-like construction that makes their drivers think the rules of physics don't apply, but it is inevitable that several of them will end up in the ditches every time it snows.

We all have our lines. $5 coffees are actually one of mine - I can spend five figures on travel in a good year, but unless I'm sitting down to relax at our neighborhood cafe, I'm not spending $5 on a cup of coffee. On the mornings I don't make my own, the gas station near me actually makes a decent cup for a buck. But upcharges in particular tend to irritate a lot of people. Just look at the fan reaction to Genie + and Lightning Lane - these are people dropping thousands of dollars on a Disney vacation, but spending the equivalent of a fast food meal to skip a line draws strong reactions. A subscription to use the features that came with a car feels the same - getting nickled and dimed to be able to use/enjoy a product you're spending (tens of) thousands of dollars on.

I think what really upsets people is having your car break down when you are in the middle of nowhere. People will continue to buy Toyotas because they are very reliable.
Everyone has their line. I think you'd be surprised. Toyota isn't the only car with a good reputation for reliability.

Things that used to be included on a $30K (and higher) purchase.
I know car prices have gone nuts, but I hope you can still buy a Camry for less than $30,000! Mine is a hybrid, so a few thousand more than a gas Camry, and it was under $30k in July 2020 when I bought it new.

July 2020 is sooooo outdated for a reference especially when the car pricing and supply issues started largely in May 2021. That said I haven't checked pricing for a few months. Just saying quoting a price somewhat early in the pandemic when car companies were in a way different position and before the chip shortages really started impacting won't be the best reference point.

Agreed. We've been looking for a good used car, and they've gone up 31.4%, on average, in the past year. I read the statistic in the WSJ. I know it's not the same as new cars, but still--it's nuts! We're making do, for now.

Oh my goodness 😳 I knew it had gone up by a considerable amount but having the number said it's like geez.

LOL, in that case I'm glad we own a red Forrester!
Seriously, I am amazed at the amount of white vehicles up here in snow country! They are dominant at appx 50% or more, then gray (which doesn't help much at all). Id on't understand it since everything is white, gray(shades of haha) for 5 months of the year!

My daughter has a white Subaru and skidded into a snow drift last year. Both she and the car were fine. Love her Subbie.
