We can all celebrate today, a day in our nation's collective history of doing the right thing. A Happy Juneteenth wish for all.

I did a lot of reading in junior high and was well acquainted with what I knew of as Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day in June, even back in the 70's. I'm so glad that it's celebrated more widely now. I'm also glad I had a great school librarian!

My life would have been darker without Miss Dolley, the librarian at the Tremont Avenue branch of the NYPL.

I read about the origins of Juneteenth but it was rarely discussed in my part of the world since we were immigrants for the most part. I’m happy to celebrate it now though and not just with sales, lol.

My daughter is a teacher and I take care of her extensive library. I give each book a number and keep a record of the books. As I do so, I often am moved to stop and read a book. I would like to highly recommend a book entitled Born on the Water, by Nikole Hannah-Jones. It is a child's book and just 50 pages, but a story that truly made me stop and think.

Juneteenth celebrates the day that the enslaved in Texas learned about the emancipation proclamation that was signed by Abraham Lincoln on April 16th. They do celebrate Emancipation Day in DC on April 16th. I find it odd that they chose to create June 19th as a Federal holiday rather than April 16th.
