Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Good morning group! Another hot day on board for us here in PA. I will be heading to the gym for another treadmill run (ugh!)

Yesterday was a light day for me. I did 3 miles on the elliptical as a little X training. Was really sore from the previous 2 days.

Padisneyfan: So, Nancy, the revolving pain has stayed in your knee? Be careful with it.....how do I know the knee pain thing! Good job on the stretch class (I didn't make it, did I?) and the X training.

Jeanneg: I am not scheduled for any disney events yet, but I guess it's just a matter of time! My next race in VA Beach 1/2 marathon Labor day weekend. Then my marathon is scheduled for Sept 30th in Toronto.

Hope everyone stays cool! Off for a long, over due haircut!

Good morning walkers.

I did my 4 miles on the hills, but with the heat, I didn't push the pace at all. The heat will end soon though and we will have some wonderful fall days for training.

I was listening to the random songs on my iPod and "Eye of the Tiger", came on. There is a line in the song that is very much us. It says we have the skills to survive on the streets.

We do things like training in heat that is dangerous, but we have the skills to survive. We know how to hydrate, we know how to train our bodies for anything mother nature can throw at us. We are a very small, about 1%, portion of the population but we are probably the most in touch with our world and it's challanges.

Walk Strong today you are unique in all the world.

Good morning team, hope you are all doing ok in this heat!!!!! UGHHHHH

I was suppose to do 6K but only ended up doing 3 the heat was just killing me.

Sorry just a quick check in.

Hope you have a great weekend all.

I spent 20 years in the tropics and the desert. The secret is to first stay hydrated, then train your body.

I found that when I lived in Vegas that every year when it turned hot again, we are talking 100+ degrees, I have run races in temps over a 100, that I went through a breakin period.

I would run the first few times on the track by the gym so if the heat got to me I had the gym right there with water and air cond in ready access. Each year I would reach a point where I felt light headed and like the heat was unbearable. This feeling would happen once and after going in and recovering my runs after that would be fine and I could leave the safety of the gym. It was like that was a switch being flipped and I body learned where the limit was and learned to deal with it.

I don't enjoy the hot humid walks as much as the cooler more pleasent days but it's part of the deal. You take the good with the bad to get to the best. If you don't you lose some of the magic.

Today is a rest day, my walk yesterday was slower and harder than it should have been so that is a signal to take an easy day.

Have an awesome day walkers.

Dave:hippie:

Morning Team.

Did a rest day yesterday because of the ache in my L knee. More than likely will do another rest day today and then my LW Sat.

Kim--- I can so relate to the heat getting to you. At least you got 3 done.

Dave--- You are a walking machine. Don't you have a race this weekend? I need to let you know that I am older than you as I will be 60 in 2010. So be nice to old ladies. :rotfl2:

Stay cool and have a great day.

Nancy, mature ladies are "HOT".

No my next race is next Saturday the 11th. It's a 5K walk race that starts 5 min after the run race so we can see how many runners we can catch.

Are you icing your sore spots after exercising? It really does help.

Dave:hippie:

Nancy, mature ladies are "HOT".

Dave:hippie:

Your eyes must be going in your old age. :rotfl2: Yea we are HOT and sweaty or should that be glowing. I have to laugh one of my older neighbors he is in his 80's, keep commenting to me how thin I am getting. Gosh his eye sight has really gone. Since I started this entire training thing I have gained 10 pounds and don't try to tell me it is muscle.

Must get busy at work.

Nancy

PaDisneyFan: but remember, muscle 'weighs' more than fat! (ha!) And don't worry, we are still "hot"......and sweaty! Doesn't it feel great to be fit! (tell that to my poor, sore muscles!).....hope work is OK on this extremely hot Friday! Have a good weekend!

Good morning team!!!!!

Just a quick driveby. Did 11.3K yesterday in 1:39:24 was suppose to do 14 but DH and I weren't well prepared we ran out of water and feared dehydrating so we cut it short. We where happy with our pace however so all is good,.

Have a awesome Saturday!!!!

Kim

Good morning guys.

I did my intervals on the treadmill for a change of pace today. It was kinda fun watching the TVs while I walked, I wouldn't want to do it everyday but it was fun today. One thing about the treadmill is you can kinda get the feel of what a pace feels like. You can try out the pace you would like to race at next (within reason of course) and see how it feels.

Have an awesome day y'all.

I did 10 miles on the TM today a little over 2 hrs and 32 minutes. Varied the pace between 3.9 and 4.0 which is slower than I usually walk. I am trying to get a feel for a slower pace when doing the long walks. I read the book CreativeBeth gave me "The Quickie" by James Patterson. It was a really fast read and I might have gone longer on the TM if I hadn't finished the book. I do have to say the 10 miler was much better this week than last week. I think if I had done it outside again, I would have had the same problem that Kim mentioned getting dehyrdrated because of not having enough water to drink. The problem on the rail trail once you are committed one way you have to walk back to get to your car so you are out of luck if you run out of water, unless you walk happens to take you pack one of the few and far between vending machines.

Dave and Kim--- Good job on getting in your walks.

Need to get a shower and then off to Sam's Club.

Nancy

Good morning walkers.

When it's hot and you do a lot of distance, it's a good idea to use an electrolyte suplement. Erica and I take a tablet after our long walks in the heat. Drinks like Gatorade have electrolytes but we don't want all the sugar from them. Since we drink lots and lots after a long walk, with Gatorade, that would be a lot of sugar.

We used to get cramping after those long walks and a personal trainer friend recommended the electrolyte tabs and we haven't had cramps since.

Erica is looking forward to the fall and cooler temps so the dog, Ayla the chocolate lab, can go walking with us some again. We don't take her on long walks when it's to hot and humid.

Everyone remember that we are endurance athletes so we need pampering. That means, good comfortable shoes. Wonderfully light and beatheable walking clothes and of course good healthy food and lots of sleep. Each of these make training better.

The comfortable shoes goes for work shoes also. I wear the Rockport Sport/dress shoes for work. Since Erica wears scrubs she can wear training shoes to work. If your feet hurt when you get off work you are in the wrong shoes. Any of you ladies have any recommendations for comfortable dress shoes for the other women?

Have an amazing day everyone.

I am going to hell for sure. This week, since I just got my Garmin and it was really too hot to train hard, I decided to "coach" hubby for the 2 half-marathons and 13K he has signed up for (2 of them against my better judgement, but I'm a woman, what do I know?) My plan was to coach him for an 8-mile walk and then go on and do another 6 by myself. Problem #1 was that instead of getting out the door at 5:30 as planned, we overslept and ended up being 2 hours behind schedule. Not good when the temps are predicted to be near 100 that day. OK, it's hot as the place I'm going to and humid as can be, so I say 8 miles is good enough for both of us. My goal was to see just how well within regulation time (16-minute mile) he could walk over an extended period of time. He's been using a pedometer and clocking in at about a 15-minute mile give or take a little, but we knew the Garmin was more accurate. First mile was a 17:22 and no matter how fast or slow I go, he's always 3 steps behind me. So we speed up and by the 2nd mile we're only a tiny bit behind (32:16) but still behind. By the 5th mile we're about 1:42 under regulation which is good, but not really enough cushion for a bottleneck, potty stop, shoe adjustment, etc. Meanwhile, with the exception of a few hills, I'm feeling like I'm going for a stroll in the park. Somewhere around mile 6, he's alot more than 3 steps behind, but he tells me to go ahead because we want to get the distance right on the Garmin (normally I would just backtrack). We turn a corner and I lose him. I'm down to a 22 minute mile and when he finally catches up, everything is cramped and hurting. So we go back home doing just under 7 miles at an overall pace of 15:46, which I'm thinking is not very good. I got him rehydrated, and made him take a cool shower with some ice therapy body wash, but he was really hurting the entire day. I felt so bad, because I thought I was just being a good coach! It turns out he's about ready to throw the Garmin into the garbage! I'm thinking that unless he does some serious training, he's not ready for the 2 half-marathons coming up. The first one is in the beginning of November and i'm willing to walk with him, if he can get down to a 15:30 pace. I won't be doing the Donald in January, so he'll be on his own then (with the exception of other WISH team folks) I think there very well may be a sweeper in his future.......and I feel like such a drill sargeant!

Dave: Please tell me a little more about the electrolyte supplement. Now that it's so hot, we've been using Gatorade diluted with water, but would prefer something with less sugar. Is the tablet something you dissolve in water or swallow whole?

Jenne, are you guys going to be at the TOT event in Oct?

Get a rolling pin or order a stick massage tool. Use it after your walks all over your legs. It really helps. Electrolyte tablets after a long hot walk help also.

What kind of a training schedule do you have him on.

You need a long walk, training for a half, 10 to 12 miles briskly is enough, but build up to it by adding a mile a week.

Walk at least 4 times a week but one long walk and the rest shorter but brisk.

ARE YOU SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT SHOES FOR YOU!!!!! Soreness, feet hurt, knees hurt, hips hurt all can be the shoes. Have you been fitted for the right ones?

Dave:hippie:

Jeanneg: Sorry to hear about the stonker LW with dh! He will have some work cut out for him, huh? What is the ice therapy body wash? Sounds like something I need! A friend of mine from another chat group sent me electrolyte supplements that she gets over the internet. It's called Electrolyte Stamina power pak (www.traceminerals.com) Comes in orange blast and lemon lime. I am going to try them out today for my LR. 10 calories, 2.7 carbs, high potassium, and includes all major electrolytes.

Beth

The ones we use are called Tablytes, they are about the size of a vitiamin pill and we ake one each after a long walk, 2 if it's over 15 miles. They cost about $6 for 90 tablets. You can also get a little bottle of the same stuff that you put a few drops of in your water bottle.

This year at the Disney marathon it was stinking hot! Erica started getting light headed (more so than normal) about 18 miles so she took one and a cliff shot along with some water. She felt better in a few minutes. She chewed me out just for general principal and off we went.

I started running out of gas at 22 miles but the other tablet had ground to powder in my little pack and I wasn't going try to pinch enouth powder from the bottom of my pack to get the electrolytes. So I had a banana at the water table and felt better. We would both have done much beter were it not so hot. Our average pace for when we were walking was about 13 min per mile. We finished with more than a half hour to spare even with Erica's many potty stops, picture stops and stops to pet animals at the Wild Animal Kingdom.

Knowing both Jeanne and John I have a complete visual picture of this and have experienced it with walking with DH. I tired to stay with him, but I just can't walk that slow so I leave him way behind. Norm started out just doing 4-5 miles and worked up to 10 miles which amazed me that he can walk that far. Though he is was smart enough not to register for a half marathon. The ToT will be his one and only race. I'm sure the heat was a big factor in how bad he felt afterwards. I'm sure that John was a real happy camper after that walk.

Dave--- Those electolyte tablets sound good to me as I am not a big sports drinker. Can you get them at a Vitamin Shop?

Beth--- You will have to let me know how the electrolyte supplement was tomorrow at work. It is a nice day for your LR.

Was going to go to Hersheypark to see Bowser's Rock and Roll Review, but DH went golfing so I think I am just going to enjoy doing my own thing. Will finish up reading another book.

No training for me today since I did my LW yesterday.

Nancy

Dave&Beth: Thanks for the info regarding the electrolyte supplement.

We went to a general sporting goods store yesterday but they did not have them. Do I need to go to a more specialized running shop (we have one in Raleigh, but it's not so closeby) or to a health food place (like GNC)?
He also got fitted for some good Mizunos and he bought a pair of bicycle type shorts to prevent chafing. I'm not sure if they're underwear or overwear, but he'll use them as underwear. I was looking for some sort of a push-up pop type ice thingy that my neighbor swears by but I couldn't find it. It was our tax-free weekend here in NC so at least we saved a little.

John and I are both doing the 13K at TofT. We will be at BW Friday and Saturday nights and are waitlisted for Thursday night (using DVC points). We have a back-up ressie at POFQ for Thursday if the waitlist doesn't come through. We're leaving Sunday evening.

I remember how hot it was during the marathon this year. As a spectator, I was dying in the heat.......can't even imagine what it was like for the participants. Everyone I spoke with says it was brutal. As my daughter approached the finish line, she spotted us in the crowd and made the "just shoot me" gesture. For a first marathon - and considering the heat - I think her time (4:01) was amazing. She was so bummed out about just missing the 4 hour mark. I hope we have much better conditions this year.

Beth: the body wash I use is an H2O SPA product. It's very expensive, but SPA products are my one indulgence. An 11.5 oz bottle runs about $14 or $15. I was introduced to them on the Disney cruise and have been hooked ever since. The one I love is called Sport Therapy Mint Body Wash.......it's very cool and refreshing and really soothes the muscles. Plus it smells so good! You can find it at www.h2oplus.com. If you register with them, they will let you know about specials and then you can stock up. If your order is at least $100, there is no shipping charge. I always wait for the specials and then make a big order. My 2 daughters also love the stuff, so I use it as birthday or Christmas gifts.

Nancy: I KNOW you have the picture right! :thumbsup2 This has been quite a weekend. Although he moved to his much smaller office a few weeks ago, this weekend we completely move OUT of the old one. I am convinced the movers left behind more than they took. The offices are about 40 minutes apart. We did 3 hauls on Saturday and 5 yesterday, but it's now completely done. We finished just before 4 a.m. this morning. Of course, now I have a @#%$load of surplus parts in our garage, but at least the office is completely cleaned out. No training for me today.....I earned a day off. Great job on reading a whole book on the TM.....I could never do that. Maybe you can read my bookclub selections and summarize them for me? :coffee:
