It sounds like a great magazine....I'd love to subscribe! Just let me know how to go about getting the reduced rate.

Jeanne

Thanks everyone for the :grouphug: - you are the best!

WALK magazine is published in my hometown - for those who haven't seen it and will be the CDC in Chicago, I can pick up a few copies and bring them with me. Any interest? I am staying at the Hilton and would be happy to catch up with folks who want to see it "live and in person" .

I'm still trying to fix the other pictures of the race.

Great news, I got the raise I asked for. I asked for a $6,000 a year increase and they approved it.

Erica and I did a nice 9 miler this morning before it got to hot. I was proud of her, she hasn't really been into it for about a month.

Erica is such a girl, walking today was, Ecco Mary Janes, Gym Girl Skirt and spagetti strap top over her sports bra. WOMEN!

DisneyWalkerGirl, the race I just did was a race where I was dead last a year ago. It was a run race and I;m a walker. Last year I was dead last with a 12 mpm pace. So this year was redemption. So sweetheart I been there done that and got the T-shirt.

Walkers are endurance athletes to, and it's by God, time the world knew that. So remember keep your head held high and your spirit soaring. We are not crippled runners we are athletes in a different sport that overlaps.

Jeanne and Nancy, you guys are just youngsters. Age is only a number and I think the 50s are awesome.

Dave:hippie:

Denise, thanks for the shin stretches, I was just wondering today how to get a good stretch on them!

you consistently reset your car odometer "just to see the distance" of wherever you go.

I thought you guys might be able to relate!

I found this website the other day and was able to map out my walk. It takes a bit of getting used to but I was also able to find other routes. They are for runners but mileage is the same if your walking or running.

www.mapmyrun.com

Hopefully it shows some of YOUR walks or routes.

If we're sharing tools...try this one.
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com

It will pull up to a map of the US. In the "jump to" space put your zip code and hit enter. When your area shows up, put the cursor on the map, right click and hold to move it to your neighborhood. Zoom in to get as close as you can. The Satellite map picture is about 2 to 3 years old. Hybrid will give you the street names on the satellite map.
When you have your area that you want to plot a route, click the "Start recording" bar on the left hand side. Turn mile markers "On." Dbl click on your start. A balloon will appear. Think straight lines, and click along the route you want to map. It will show you the distance on the left hand side, but every mile will be marked on your map. If you do an "out and back" route, you just have to do 1/2 of it, tell it to "complete route" and it does the rest for you. You can undo the route, change it, or save it. The distance is pretty accurate. One of my favorite tools!!
Hope this helps.

If there are a few of us who would like to subscribe to the magazine, I'll be willing to submit our addresses to the company. It says for the Walking Club to submit the addresses and money at one time. PM me if you are interested.

DisneyWalkerGirl/Kathy, Hopefully, if the magazine is published there, they will have a sample in our "goodie" bag or, at the VERY least, have a booth at the expo. If it doesn't cost you anything, I would love to see a copy! The WISH shirts will be all over the Hilton, I'm staying out of town, but hopefully we'll hook up somewhere! I'll have my WISH shirt on at the expo. Half of our group is going to see Wicked, so I imagine that we will be there before noon. Looking forward to seein' ya! :goodvibes Anne

DisneyWalkerGirl- just remember what John Bingham says- you had the courage to start! That having been said, I can see how it would mess with your mind after a bit. Just tell yourself that you're accomplishing something that most never even try! You are an endurance athlete! Be proud of yourself!

I was reading over on the MCM thread about Chester's (rkydex) wife, who has attempted to finish the Disney marathon like 3 times, but got swept repeatedly! I was amazed at the courage she had, what it takes to keep on going, to keep on trying, even when it seems like you'll not reach your goal.

You have that courage too, otherwise you wouldn't enter races. You're being all you can be (to quote the military).

Never give up, never surrender! :grouphug:

OMG, I don't think I would have attempted a 2nd never mind a 3rd. This Donald will be my one and only. Too much in my life to occupy my time. I want that medal and I want to say I did it. My heart will be broken if I get swept.

Yep you say that now and it my well be your one and only. But maybe just maybe you will start to wonder. "Hummmm could the Mickey really be that tough." Then you will belly up to the marathon bar with the rest of us. You will start having scary thoughts like "You only live once". Then you are hooked.:upsidedow

Yep it will happen.

PatsBill: Have you registered yet?:rolleyes1

Kim

Kim

Although I still do not know for sure whether I'll be able to attend, I did mail in my registration for the ToT 6.5K. Anyone have any suggestions as to how I should approach my wife and kids about it? My wife already knew I "ain't right" before these distance event "fantasies."

I'm thinking of explaining it as a mid-life crisis thing, only without the motorcycle or convertible sports car. (No offense intended to any motorcycle riders or WWDave ;-).) It just happens that being a kid at heart, all the events I'm interested in are at WDW. Not sure if I can pull it off with a straight face though.

Anyway, I should try to get to bed. I did, however, want to congratulate everyone who participated in events this weekend.

Good morning,

I am up getting ready for a walk, having a cup of coffee.

My new plan is to get up and walk when dh gets back from his workout at 6am. This way the weather is nicer and LTO won't happen because my walk is first.

Today is only 30min. No biggie, and I don't mind being up since I am really a morning person anyway.

Stacey, Is that magazine mostly for racewalkers? Or for fitness walkers too?

Anne, If the magazine is for fitness walkers, then I am in on the group rate. I will PM you later today. I also responded to you and asked a question about tapering on the CDC thread if you get a chance to read it :) :) . Thanks for sharing your experience with this novice!

Dave, How did you do on the lottery ticket?

nepatsfan73 (sorry I missed your real name), I don't know your wife, but are you willing to travel without kids? I know my dh and I sometimes need a weekend/week away and this would be a great way to suggest it. Also be honest, and tell her it is something you would really like to do, as part of your new healthy lifestyle, and these type of rewards keep you motivated and give you a reason to get out there and do it. I know if my dh told me that, was honest, and we actually had the money to go, I wouldn't stop him, even if it meant him going without me/kids. good luck:thumbsup2

To coin Dave - walk strong ( I like that phrase)
Maggie

Good morning team!!!

WWDave congrats on the raise!!!!!!!!

Patsbill: Glad to hear you sent in your registration!!!!

Did a weights workout yesterday and a bit on the stationary bike, then decided I didn't like the way my workout area was set up so DH and I moved everything around so great workout yesterday.

Kim

Good morning fellow athletes.

Bill I bought the lottery ticket for tomorrows drawing. The last one Erica bought so I guess that one didn't have the luck of the old and senile in it. I had let her buy that last one because when we go to a race where there are cash prizes she always wins money.

Bill the stang conv is Erica's, home boy here drives a 12 year old Jeep. The next new car is mine. I'm thinking a 6 cyl Toyota Rav 4. They have good power and 28 mpg. My Jeep is about 18 on a good day.

Everyone, walk today like it's what you were designed to do. Because you were. I was talking to an old black man who works up at the collage, as a grounds keeper. He calls me the travelin man. He said when he was young that a poor men who wanted to travel usually had to walk. So fast walking was a way of life. When you seen a man walking then he was travelin, since people didn't "exercise", their work was hard enouth to keep them in shape. Our work is not phyisically demanding anymore so our play has to be.

I hope everyone has an opportunity to go out and play today.

Dave:hippie:

DisneyWalkerGirl- I thought of you when I got the RW Daily Kick in the Butt- here's the quote:

You learn you can do your best even when it's hard, even when you're tired and maybe hurting a little bit. It feels good to show some courage."

Joe Namath

Maggie- it's for both, fitness walkers & race walkers. I'm a fitness walker, and I appreciate the articles.

I think they started in 05. There was another walking magazine, it's gone now. This one is published 4 times a year, and it's got some neat articles. I've learned alot from it!
http://www.walk-magazine.com/

That magazine looks like something I would enjoy. Thanks for the link.

Anne---I sent you a pm. Thanks for looking into getting us a group rate.

I'm still trying to fix the other pictures of the race.

Congratulations on getting a raise. So you will be treating all of us to a drink during the ToT weekend right. You should consider yourself so lucky to be walking with such a fashionable women. :rotfl2:

I like the mapmyrun site. I have several routes around my house that I have maped out using that site.

Anne-- I will have to check out your site.

OMG, I don't think I would have attempted a 2nd never mind a 3rd. This Donald will be my one and only. Too much in my life to occupy my time. I want that medal and I want to say I did it. My heart will be broken if I get swept.

I'm with you, if I don't finish the Mickey in 2008 I will not be back to try it again. I like doing halfs and will probably do several more of them but not another full marathon. It will truely be a once and done thing for me. I just don't have the time to train for a full.

Disneywalkergirl-- You did a good job with your races. It is to bad that not more walkers aren't showing up for the races. In my area, most of the races are geared toward runners and very few walkers enter them. So I have not done any local races. I wish I could find a 10K walk that I could do just for a change of scenery.

nepatsfan73 --- I hope that you are able to work things out to come to the ToT race.

Kim-- So you have all that equipment in your house? Lucky you.

Last night did 4 miles on TM and went to Pilates. Decided to do Pilates for a change from stretch class. Tonight will be pump class, not sure what cardio I will do yet. Either TM or elipical. It is to dang hot to walk outside.

I can't do spaghetti straps......but have lots of spaghetti stains!

Congrats on the raise!

Hey everyone!

I'm a slow runner, but am going to walk the ToT 6.5k with my 7 year old daughter. I haven't officially signed up, but DH agreed we could go back to Disney for the race so consider me in! (It may have been selective hearing since he said something about going for the race in January- hmmm... who doesn't listen to my race talk? :rotfl: Maybe he'll listen better when he sees me loading the car in October!)

Question for walkers-- DD and I have done some 5ks together, but they've usually ended with her in tears. However, she's a year older now than our last 5k and is in better overall shape. I know she can walk far because we did 7 miles at the beach- but it took a long time. She's the one who is totally excited about entering the race- it wasn't my idea...

DD seems most interested in the WISH shirt I got her, the medal, the ride, etc.- no mention of the actual part where you have to you know, do the race. ;)

Here's the question finally- What sort of training do I need to get us doing so we aren't miserable at the end? I was thinking maybe walking 2 miles during the week/2-3 times per week and working up a long walk on the weekends to about 5. Again, not looking to set speed records, just want her to enjoy the race.

Thanks

Jen in GA

OH, and Patsbill, I totally am working the early mid-life crisis angle. Think about the trouble you could be getting into- but no, you are trying to make yourself better for yourself and your family! I talked DH into ToT by babbling about positive reinforcement of healthy habits...:rotfl:
