Hi everyone,

Have you ever had this scenario happen in a restaurant?

Last night dd and five friends were given the bill for their meal along with a note from the waitress. The note gave the amount of tip she expected (l5% = $8.) and 20% = $10.

This was at a Perkins here locally. DD and her friends were shocked, but too nice to say anything to the manager. DD is l8 and her friends are l9.

DD brought the note home to show me. I know that some reataurants expect a certain tip to be given for large groups, but six people?

Does anyone else think this is strange?

Herc.

Yes it's strange.

I would have written back..
I had planned on tipping you 12 dollars but since you seem to feel 8 is sufficient, that is what I am leaving!

I think that's incredibly rude. Some restaurants do add the tip in for parties of 6, but that's actually part of the price, not a suggestion. I'm sure this waitress has been stiffed on the tip by younger people before, but she needs to get over it and not act like all of them are going to do that to her.

I think its very rude! Tipping should depend on performance....if the performance is good then they should get at least 15%...more for better service, but I REFUSE to tip 15% to someone who can't even refill our drinks.

Hi Herc!
Many menus around here have a clause at the bottom stating "A 15% gratuity will be added to parties of 6 or more"

Maybe this is what was going on here.... Weird!

I just looked at a menu from Juniors. On the bottom in small print it says, "A 15% gratuity is appropriate and will be added to checks for parties of 6 or more and all parties after 9pm."

A few years ago I took my son to a restaurant near Radio City Music Hall on a Saturday afternoon; when I got the bill, the tip was already added to the price.

Thanks for all your comments everyone!

I would have thought if this was an automatic charge with Perkins, the exact tip would have added to the bill.

Both my kids and their friends have eaten there many tmes before and not been treated this way.

I am inclined to think Kermit is probably on target with her comment about this waitresss being stiffed by teenagers before this.

The ironic part abou this whole thing is DD is a very generous tipper and is always worried that I am leaving enuf for the waitress when we eat out. LOL

That reminds me of when I went on a trip to NYC with a church group when I was in high school. We attended a Broadway play (Grease, it was the mid 70's) and then had dinner at an Italian restaurant nearby. There were 4 of us at the table and we got the bill and only had a little money leftover for a tip (bill was more than we expected). 2 waiters were standing over us pointing at the back of the bill where it said something like "15% gratuity is additional" and were yelling at us in broken English. We just kept shrugging our shoulders saying it's all we had!

I always think it's rude to ask for a tip or to automatically add one to the bill.

A Tip is To Ensure Prompt Service. If I was given a bill and there was a note ot the the bill to that effect and the service was not very exceptional. I would have left the waitress a penny and a reply to her note Tips are earned not guaranteeed.

I've eaten in Perkins before with more then 6 in a party and we have never had our tip added to the bill. The waitress was just rude. I think some people assume because you are younger that means you are not responsible. I work with a lot of younger kids and find them to be very capable and responsible.

That is very rude. I start with the 15% and then deduct. If the severice was outstanding then I give more. I think that's most generally how it is done.
That does remind me of a storre, Dh was in Europe and @ a bar he was a little out of it and had a lady of the night write down her price. Dh turned the paper over and wrote a price, she looked @ him like what is this? Well he explains that that is his price!! The Lady just stomped off. :D
