Vinegar wash?

Ok so I've read a couple of posts of people suggesting to wash your ironed on shirts in warm water with a cup of vinegar and no detergent and then dry on low heat.

Why is this step necessary? Ive just made a bunch of shirts and I'm trying to decide if i need to do this step as well.

Washing in vinegar in not necessary.

I am not saying that it doesn't help - please don't misunderstand. I have personally never tried it!

I think it really has more to do with the transfers you use and if you follow the directions carefully.

I have used some transfers and was very impressed with the quality and have used others and been disappointed. I am in the process of trying to find a transfer company that I really like.

I will be honest - I have been putting transfers on tees for my family for yearfs now & I have never done any of the things that were suggested - I never wash any of my tees. I don't put vinegar. Is there a reason for all this? Do the transfers last longer? I am going to order my shirts today & I guess I will wash them when I get them but I was hoping to give some as gifts- won't they get all wrinkled if I was them? I don't mean to sound stupid!

I am certainly no pro at this, but I made a few shirts last week with the HP transfer paper, I washed 2 inside out and hung to dry, they looked great. Now another got washed regular and dried it actually turned out ok too!
I didn't used vinegar and I didn't wash the shirts firts either.

The reason you wash the shirts before ironing is to remove 'the stuff' (sizing, I believe) from the shirts so that the iron-on will stick better. Remember no fabric softner.

I dry them normally as well - except no dryer sheet.

Between a good wash and ironing the iron on, the shirts look wonderful for the first wear. I do not wash again until after my trip so that they look fresh. Just my opinion.

OK, I'm the one that originally posted the question that received the response suggesting the vineager wash.... because when we wore our shirts the first time on Splash Mtn, the ink ran. I thought I had done something wrong. So then I started getting the suggestion to do the vinegar wash but when we did that and dried the shirts, the colors faded. So not really sure what is the correct thing to do.

Hmm.....based on peoples experience I think I'm going to skip the Vinegar wash. We're probobly only wearing most of our shirts in DLR on our honeymoon so not like it really matters.

I have been making shirts since our 2005 trip. Thankfully only one of my shirts ever "ran".

I have always washed the shirts first in just detergent, dried in the dryer (no vinegar wash/ no dryer sheet)did the iron on according to directions with just a few extra seconds ironing for good measure. Then I pack the shirts.

My kids still wear some of the shirts I made in 2005.

The paper I have been using is the Printworks for dark shirts.
