Hi, just got back from 5 days at Vero.

Weather was awesome, from 70 - 80 each day.
Ocean was cool at 68 degrees, but both kids enjoyed boogie boarding. We hit the beach every day.

The ramp to the beach was open and repairs had been made at the bottom. At low tide the beach was fairly wide, but at high tide water was washing up under the walkway. The beach was beautiful, and the Florida sun allowed us to stay there every day even when there was a breeze.

The resort was crowded as we arrived the Sunday after Christmas and stayed through Friday. I would guess 90-100% of capacity.

The pool was very busy, though the late afternoon was less hectic.

Our studio in building 12 was clean, looked freshly painted, well equipped and all was in working order. It was tight with 2 adults and 18 and 15 year old boys. One teen slept on an inflatable mattress.

We played 9 holes of golf at Barefoot Bay, just off Route 1. This is a par 3/4 course in a senior community. Rates are very reasonable, just make it clear when you call that you are not a resident of the community. It was $20 for 18 holes ($15 for 9 holes), pull carts were $1. An electric cart was $7.42 per person for 9 holes (Didn't check for 18). If you are looking for a good course for beginners or for the whole family, the number is in the yellow pages in the rooms at Vero under golf courses. Keep in mind that you will probably be the only folks there under 55! We didn't care! Everyone was very friendly.

Also received the room rates for Vero for 2003. These are the "rack rates" and I'm sure discounts are probably available.
During the holiday season, the rates are: studio $300; one bedroom $430 and two bedroom, $640. The beach cottage goes for $1105. Rates are lower in peak, summer and value seasons, but you are still way ahead using points. Our 5 day stay would have run $1,230 (the last two days were value season). Instead it cost 78 points, not too shabby!

The New Year's party was the only "less than Disney quality" event. It was a DJ at poolside, lots of karoake, very cool air when the sun went down and it ended 15 minutes early in a rain shower. Poorly planned and executed, not much fun. But, it didn't dampen a wonderful vacation.

Thanks for the report. We are going to VB for a week in May. Looking forward to it. Any recommendations for eating?

Thanks for the nice report! As you know, the weather here in the NY area was a far cry from 70-80 degrees on the beach!

The info on the golf course is good to know. Did you try any area restaurants that you might want to recommend or flag to avoid?

Thanks for the report.Glad you enjoyed your stay!:)Had a feeling things wern't going to go too well for the NYE party. Visited for lunch the week before and they still wern't really sure what they were going to do. Got a ton of rain that night ended up staying indoors:( Did you venture into the Green Cabin Room for NYE?

Thanks for your trip report. We will be going to VB in just 2 weeks for our first trip ever there. Can't wait!! Have heard so many good things about it.

Regarding eating spots, we love the Chilis in Vero Beach on Route 1. The hamburgers there are excellent. We went there twice in 5 days!

This was an "economy" trip so we didn't hit other restaurants. Lots of fast food! On past trips we have enjoyed Capt. Hiram's in Sebastian and the Outback Steakhouse in Vero Beach on Route 1. We also enjoy breakfast in Shutters at the resort, though the dinner menu doesn't do much for us.

If you do like fast food, go back over 510 to Route 1. If you turn right (toward Sebastian) you will quickly come upon a new Publix supermarket and a Subway. A few miles down the road and you will find Wendys, McDonalds, Burger King, and a combined Kentucky Fried/Pizza Hut/Taco Bell.

If you go left on US 1, toward Vero, after a few miles you will come to a fast food strip with anything you could imagine. (IHOP, Outback, all the others.)

We did try the "Pizza on the run" that you get from Bleachers at the resort. You call a number listed on a flyer in your room, and you have a choice of a cheese, pepperoni or special pizza. You go over to Bleachers and pick up your pizzas at the time you requested. The pizzas are 16 inches, heavy on the cheese. THe crust is OK. Not comparable to what we get in New York, but good enough and very reasonable ($12.95 for the cheese, more for the others. Two cheese pies fed our family of 4 for $27 and change including tax.

A friend told me of another, even more inexpensive golf course, again par3/4. It is furthre North of Barefoot Bay on Old Dixie Highway, off US 1, north of Sebastian. We'll try this one next trip. She also said the weather was unusually warm this year. Her folks are in Sebastian, so she is down every year and she told me it is usually in the sixties.

Many folks on this board have also recommended the Ocean Grill in Vero Beach on A1A. We haven't tried that yet. The menu is posted outside the restaurant and it is expensive.

This is probably more than you wanted to know, but I'd rather have too much information than not enough
