Vegetarians do not live on salads alone!

I'l fairly strict most of the time, however, I do eat cheese and don't check for rennet and we do use marshmallows, even though they are not vegetarian. I think those are my only exceptions and if it was easier to eat vegie for those things I would. My kids have always eaten jello from buffets and I have never made a big deal about it. I've obviously drawn my line in the sand and am not as strict as some, but more so than many.
Okay, here goes nothing! What's wrong with cheese? Because it's dairy, therefore cow?

What's rennet?

What's wrong with marshmallows? I didn't think there was anything natural in them...oh wait, eggs?

What's in jello?

What could a sample menu for a day consist of (exclusing tofu, because that just scares me for no good reason! :) )?

Look how much I'm learning!! :cool1:

Since we've been making fun of Oregon I will say Oregonians tend to have a "closed gate mentality" about anyone moving to Oregon. I think my poor inlaws almost fell over when DH moved me to Oregon.

Aww, we're not all that way. :umbrella:

I'm just joking--I love Oregonians, especially since I still consider myself one.

There is a quote from Judy Blume's "Dear God, Are You There? It's Me, Margaret" which goes, "He who asks the most questions learns the most." So consider yourself a brainiack.

People don't eat dairy for different reasons, too. Many people find it to be an unhealthy food. Others because yes, it came from an animal.

Not sure what rennant (sp?) is.

I don't eat tofu either. I eat lots of pasta and grains and beans and legumes and bread and Quorn products. I swear, Quorn should be its own food group, it's so darn yummy.

Marshmellows have some animal by-product, but you can buy vegan marshmellows. Don't know how they taste, though.

I would love to give you a sample menu for the day, but last time this topic came up, some of us were the laughing stock of the board. But, I will tell you that I eat LOTS of ethnic foods, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, etc...

Breakfast usually is cereal or oatmeal and fruit. Lunches can be sandwiches (natural PB & J on WW, Hummus, etc...), soup (Black Bean, Corn Chowder, Split Pea, Vegetable, Lentil, Chili, etc...), salads or leftovers from dinner. Dinners are usually simple for me since the rest of my family aren't vegans. The staples in my house are beans, rice, veggies, tahini, cashews, almonds, fruit & spices. I can do wonders with that.

If you want to try some tofu, but are afraid, find Mori Nu pudding mix in your health food section. It is made for Mori Nu Silken Firm tofu. You mix it with a bit of water and voila, pudding. I made a chocolate pudding pie tonight: graham cracker crust, chocolate fudge layer (vegan cream chese, maple syrup & Ghiradelli's double chocolate chips) followed by the chocolate pudding mix. It was completely SCARFED down by the carnivores tonight. IF, and I mean IF, they even suspected tofu, my kids would have run screaming! But, instead, they asked, begged and pleaded for seconds. To me, that passed the test. And BOY, was it good! :teeth:

Yeah, that's what I eat.

My liege! :worship:

You're making me hungry.

Hucifer, you can have the last slice of pie if you want it! :cool1: It will sell you on Tofu! Promise!

One question for you though, is all Quorn binded with egg? I see it in all the ingredients.

First of all, I live in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, so please send your pie there. Tanks. :teeth:

Second, yep Quorn is not vegan. :guilty: But it is so darn yummy I excuse the milk and eggs.

I don't even know exactly what rennet is, but maybe someone else knows. It is a meat product, though.

A lot of people who don't eat dairy or eggs choose that because of the deplorable way that animals are treated. They might not be killed for the milk or eggs, but it's a fate worse than death. I visited a egg farm when I was a teen (and ate meat). The chickens were stuffed in little cages, with a slanted wire floor. It was slanted so that the eggs would roll forward to be collected. It was really an awful place and I'm surprised that I continued to eat meat. It made quite an impression on me for sure--that's been almost 30 years ago and I can still remember it plain as day.

Also, for dairy, it doesn't agree with a lot of people. Afterall, we're the only animal that drinks the milk of another species.

Waaaaa, I want the pie--I get dibs! I'll have to look that up.

Thanks for posting. I am headed back to being more vegetarian and you make it seem possible. It's a challenge for me to cook vegetarian meals with 4 kids with one on the way.

Just post (or PM) the recipe. I'll forgive you for not sending it.

Oh how I love Ghiradelli...*sigh*

OK, here's the recipe...

Chocolate Pudding Pie

1 chocolate graham cracker crust (bought or homemade)
1 bag Ghiradelli Double Chocolate Chips
1 container Tofutti Vegan Creme Cheese
Pure Maple Syrup to taste
1 package Mori Nu chocolate Pudding mix Pudding Mix Link
1 Mori Nu Lite Silken Tofu Firm

First make fudge bottom of pie. In a double boiler, melt chocolate chips, almost all the creme cheese and maple syrup to taste (I used about 1 tbsp). When smooth, taste. Spread in pie shell and chill.

Make Pudding mix as directed for pie (mix, tofu and 2 tbsp water). Blend very well in food processer or blender. Pour into chilled shell and chill some more.

Eat. Yum! :cool1: Simple and Oh so good! Enjoy.

First off, I would never (intentionally) insult the food someone else eats (except my BF who seems to eat olives with everything! :) ).

This seems way more complicated than just "cutting out meat". I'm such a fussy eater. I won't eat seafood (used to eat shrimp, but developed an allergy), don't like a lot of ethnic foods and I suppose I'm a creature of habit.

If you eat cereal, what do you put in it? Soy milk? Is that a taste that's developed?

I was just looking at the food pyramid and could pretty much figure what to eat for each level, except when I got to the protein part. Again, creature of habit.

I'd gladly accept PMs of suggestions (so that no one is made the laughing stock). Also, is it more expensive to eat vegetarian (obviously, cutting out meat saves a ton of $$, but does it even out when you substitute the other stuff?).

Not sure if I could survive without dairy or eggs though.

I do eat dairy and eggs. Again, everyone makes their own decisions--some don't eat any meat products, some eat eggs and/or dairy, some eat fish, etc.

Even though I eat dairy and eggs, I'm not opposed to cutting back on them, either. Kind of like we eat sugar, but I'm always interested in cutting back.

We also eat a lot of ethnic food--Italian, Mexican, Indian, Thai, etc. Tonight was kind of boring, though--baked potatoes and green beans.

I am vegetarian and I don't eat salad. I think it's so funny when people assume that I like salad. The bulk of my diet is soy protein, dairy, and whole grains. I also mix in some fruits and raw veggies here and there. :teeth:
