Vacuum cleaner recommendations - Update Pg. 8

Well, if you desire to spend a lot of money for an inferior product, that's your business of course. It's a free country. I would feel guilty touting a Dyson vacuum considering their poor price/performance ratio. Perhaps you are more interested in style rather than performance.
That's it...you found me out. I'm far more interested in having a perty vacuum cleaner in the closet than having one that picks up the 1/2 a dog my German Shepherd seems to shed a day. :rotfl:

Ohhhh I just couldn't help myself.. I've updated my Signature just for you Sonic....

Thanks for this post. We need a new vacuum too as we have two that are not working in our garage at the moment. Get married, combine households, kill both vacuums. I thinkw e are going to use all of DH's cashback rewards for Discover, a 20% off coupon, and see how affordable that gets a Dyson to us. If not we'll move to plan two but a vacuum is getting to be a necessity right now.

Thanks! Your picture is an excellent example. Dyson vacuum cleaners are clearly an example of style over substance.

James Dyson is an artist, not an engineer. His previous inventions such as the Ballbarrow, Waterrolla and the Trolleyball have all won awards for great artistic design. Artistically speaking, his designs are good. Practically speaking, his designs have never worked very well including all of vacuums, but they are very stylish.

It is indisputable that far better vacuum cleaners are available for a much lower price. They're just not as pretty as a Dyson. You end up paying a high price for a pretty vacuum with moderate performance.

I'll give you the "high price" part, but my Dyson works FAR better than any other vacuum I've ever owned. To each his/her own, I suppose.

The OP asked for recommendations. Everyone here has recommended what they feel is the best. To determine that all Dyson owners are stupid/superficial/spendthrifts/whatever is ignorant.

I made no such determination. I based my conclusions on several published reports from highly respected consumer testing organizations as well as my own observations and experience. I have previously mentioned Consumer Reports, however, here's an excerpt of a review from another well respected testing organization;

"In professional testing, the Dyson DC14 doesn't outperform the cheaper Eureka or Kenmore models. Although reviews agree that the Dyson, which has won several design awards, is great looking and gets terrific suction and airflow, it still underperforms less expensive models on carpet. The seventeen-pound DC14 Animal includes a powered hand tool for digging pet hair out of upholstery and stairs. If you love gadgets and snazzy design, then the Dyson may be for you. Otherwise, the other models clean just as well for less."

It's nice that you enjoy your Dyson but it's also expensive and it doesn't work very well compared to other less expensive models. Dyson's do a good job sucking up your money!

I DO have that Hoover WindTunnel that was highly rated in Consumer Reports, and I also subscribe to CR and use it for many purchasing decisions. However, that Hoover has been TERRIBLE - it clogs with minimal dog hair and has to be cleaned out frequently. I don't mean cleaned out as in every two or three vacuums - I mean two or three times while vacuuming my house ONCE. And my dog can't possibly be shedding that much!!!!

I agree with you, that machine doesn't work well. That is a common problem with bagless vacuums.

When I was shopping for vacuums at Sears the salesman said that he would never buy a Dyson (this Sears was selling Dyson). Said they weren't worth the money and didn't perform that well. :confused3

But.. but.... I thought CR & not actual consumer experience is what counts! Also you brought up a good point (for me!)... My entire house is carpeted, I own 3 dogs & 3 cats and when I owned a 'bagged' vacuum had been known to fill up a bag during one cleaning... So as I figure it I vacuum at least three times a week - we'll be conservative & say I go through 9 bags a month... grocery store prices on the bags (IF you can find the right size there) is about $4 for a 3 pack.. that's $12 a month or $144 a year.. I've owned my Dyson for over 3 years & paid about $400 for it... so my 3 year cost of ownership for my Dyson = $400... for your suggested Eureka = $570-$600 .... now who's paying too much for a vacuum?!

Another plug for Dyson. I've gone through 2 Hoovers in my short 10 years of marriage, including the $300 Hoover Windtunnel. Those were not good vacuums in my opinion.

The Dyson hasn't ceased to amaze me yet. I've had it for almost 6 months. I think it takes some time to get used to the attachments and hose, but it is worth it.

My only complaint is the floor tool---or lack thereof. I need to order a hardwood floor tool from the Dyson website. I do not like the one that came with my vac.

My Dyson is red and purple. I used to know the reason for that when I had researched and pickeed out my model, but I can't remember anymore! I think it is a low reach model.

Think of your Dyson purchase as an investment and the cost won't bother you so much.

Sorry more questions. The DC14 is newer than the DC07? I see all these different types of Dyson's: Animal, ball, upright, low reach, all floor! I have carpet, flooring and cats. I live in an apartment so I don't need to vacuum stairs.
I was also looking at amazon.com and they seem to have pretty good prices so I might just test it out in a store and ultimately go through amazon.com.

One of the major problems with bag-less vacuums is that they don't filter the air too well. The Dyson's are notorious for poor air filtration. They tend to blow particles of dirt, dust and allergens picked up by the vacuum back into the air in your home. Newer vacuums have true HEPA filtration with sealable HEPA filter bags to help eliminate spewing dirt, dust and allergens out of the vacuum. What goes in the vacuum, stays in the vacuum and the bags are easy to remove and seal. Bag-less vacuums are nasty to empty. The price of vacuum bags is well worth the cost in consideration of the health issues alone.

If you suffer from allergies, you don't want a bag-less vacuum.

The LOGICAL choice and I'm worth it! :cool1: :rotfl:

This is too funny. All this over a vacuum cleaner.

I've been happy with my vacuum (a really old panasonic), but it's getting harder and harder to find the bags. Way back when, I had a Kirby. I loved it for how well it cleaned..until I realized a lot of the stuff I sucked up was my carpet. We were young and poor back when we got that carpet, so I'd like to think the Kirby tour it apart because it was cheap. How about this one...see any parts of your carpet? Not it's an expensive carpet, and I really don't want to tear it apart.
And for those with allergies..I'd never hear a bagless was a problem, has anyone else?

I have severe allergies and the bagless does bother me because it has to be emptied and it's impossible to not let any of that dust fly out in the air some.

DH emptied it in a spare room last time but I still sneezed and wheezed from it. We immediately had to dump the bag in the dumpster.

I like bags because of that, but nothing else ;)

Another obvious flaw in the Dyson sales pitch is their lifetime HEPA filter. Sorry, but this is just a lie. All filter materials suffer from age related degradation and need to be replaced at regular intervals. Would you want a lifetime air filter on your car or in your heating and A/C system in your home?

Okay, curiousity has gotten the best of me...

Why do you care so much that so many people love their Dyson and recommend them to others? Do you work for a competitor of Dyson? Had a bad experience with a Dyson?

A lot of people are extremely happy with their choice -- why do you have the right to bad mouth it?

Funny though, you remind me an awful lot of another poster....... :dancer:
