Using Up Scraps?

While working on an AK layout today, I decided to come up with some sort of border using only scraps that I've kept.

Looking thru my scrap file, I'm amazed at all I've accumulated but never really go back to use.

So.... do you keep all your scraps OR just pieces larger than a certain size?

Also, PLEASE share tips or tricks where I can use up more scraps!

My trick today was: selected several colors of scraps that went well together. Ran the scraps thru Xyron. Tore the adhesived scraps & stuck them onto a larger piece of scrap that was about 4x11 -- leaving some of the bottom large scrap showing thru. Cut the project into 4 strips of 1x11 to use as borders. It's a different look -- but it works for my AK layout. Sort of looks African with the colors I used.

I save my scraps,in a big shoe box! I use them for making journal boxes,nuggets,ect..I also like to mat stickers, I also use them to make paper peicing kits to sell on ebay. I use mainly the same colors of cardstock most of the time so I usually have plenty of scraps the same color!

I have a folder that I put my scraps in. I try to work from that unless I have something specific in mind. I was doing a PO layout and was able to use some of the scraps as dots of confetti, triangles for decoration and journaling and a lot of other smaller things. I've even been known to do what you did (without the Xyron) and make frames, too. It gives a little added kick to the page.

I took a class at my LSS recently, & we learned to use scraps of paper along with a strip of paper. We adhered the scraps along the edges in a random fashion. We let the scraps overlap each other & go over the edges. After they glue of whatever dried, we used our trimmers to cut along the edge of the strip.

I made one using red, white & blue paper pieces. The strip was blue, & the scraps around the edges were red & white. I used it on a military page with a ship sticker on it. Another one that I made I used as a heading with the name of the city I visited.

I hope this makes sense .

JudithM, it makes perfect sense! It's pretty similar to what I came up with today. The 4 page layout is almost done. I'll try to finish & post tomorrow to show what I did with the scraps.

Avatar: It's been a while. Hope I can remember.

If you see an avatar or picture you like, right click on it. (So in other words, steal mine. LOL) In the menu that pops up, click properties. Hightlight the URL, then copy it & paste it into your browser. Go to that website.

A webpage should appear with your picture. Right click the picture & click "Save as Picture" --- noting where in your computer it will be saved to.

Next, on DIS board, go to User CP at top. Edit profile. Where asked what avatar to use....indicate to upload one from your computer.

All my scraps are in Jumbo One Zip bags by colors...to use them up I do a TON of paperpiecing and Serendipity Squares...I also use them for cutting out letters and die cuts. I was just in a swap for an outdoor theme paperpiecing and I couldn't believe how many scraps I used on just 7 pieces.

I don't save everything, if it less than a 1/2" wide and a couple of inches long it goes in the trash because I know that is where it will end up eventually anyway.

I have used a lot of the matting card stock already cut to 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches that come in the heavy plastic cases. So as I've emptied those I collect by darks, lights, etc. As I empty more I'm sure I'll re-divide. When I need small bits for corners and so forth I go back to those. I also check there when I have smaller photos to mat. But it is usually my luck that the color I'm working with isn't in there!

This weekend I used red, white and blue same size strips of paper, glued them to a piece of paper and then cut them in the same size strips again, but going the opposite direction. Then I re-pasted them on a frame to attach on a card. This will be a July 4th card for a friend. I make frames like others have described but, mostly, the small pieces are used for corner embellishment and journaling.

I throw away the tiny pieces and sort the rest by color in an accordian folder. When I am paper piecing I can go right to the scraps of the correct color and they are easy to transport to crops.

Neat title! I'll have to remember that.

I love the serendipity piece that you made. I am going to have to scraplift that for our AK pages. Do just what you did and maybe add some stickers, beads, charms, glitter or rubber stamping to it, cut them into squares to use as accents on your pages and you have some wonderful serendipity squares. Also cut smaller squares diagonally and use them as photo corners. Great job! Thanks for the inspiration!

Actually, no, THANK YOU!! I liked the pages but there were still some blank areas I didn't know what else to write. I still have some of the serendipity piece I made. I might try using more of it as you mentioned there. Not into beads, charms, glitter or stamping (YET - $$$) but I can certainly use more of the paper. Thanks for inspiring ME! LOL

I tore up coordinating brites - adheres them to a piece of paper and used it as backgorund paper

my favorite-
Tore up paper to little pieces - adhered to a piece of paper and cut letter out of it for titles! You can use Quikkutz, Sizixx, or Coluzzle cutters to make them!

I save most of my scraps larger than a 1" box! Although it is getting ridiculously full!

I pass some to my children 11,7,6, to do their own You should see whar my son can make with scraps. He may be my future scrapbook partner he's 7 and made a basket ball hoop out of scraps. I really looks like the little tikes sooo cute When I get too many I sit in the evening and punch with the kids and pull out my sizzix and make trees and thing The stuff that can be basic colors
