Upgrading UT tickets to AP

So, I called universal and they said you cannot upgrade Undercover Tourist tickets at all. Now, I feel this is probably incorrect and that if I used the ticket first, we could do this. Here is the issue: our tickets are not valid until July 10 and we would like to go the 8th, so I cannot test this theory, unless I request a date change if that is even possible, but if I then cannot upgrade, I risk our tickets not being valid on the 17th, which would have been a full park day (we are going for a dance competition so are busy with that most days). Any ideas?

We literally upgraded UT tickets to an AP in January at the Portofino Bay guest services desk. Full story: before using the ticket (2-park park-to-park multiday), we had it converted from an e-ticket (printout with QR code) to a card-style, so the person using it could hang it from a lanyard. A couple days later (but before the ticket was used up), we decided to upgrade it to a seasonal 2-park AP. It was price-bridged (meaning, we were charged the rack rate difference between the two, and retained the benefit of the UT discount): whether this was a result of the prior conversion from an e-ticket to a traditional ticket, or would have been done in any case, I don't know.
