Upgrade Surprise?

Very rare.

Always book the room you want, DCL is very good at filling up their ships, there is no logic to who may get an upgrade, but it is rare, it can happen but do not bank on it.

The last time it happened for us was 2003.
I called several months before the cruise to ask about something and the man on the phone was sweet and friendly we were chit chatting and he said, "i'm going to put you guys in a better room". I think we had something on deck 7 with verandah and he put us on deck 8 next to door to the Roy Disney Suite. They have changed the categories since then but this room slept 5 instead of 4.
Now its more families opting to pay for an upgrade at the port.

It kind of depends what you booked and what you consider an upgrade.

If you booked a specific stateroom, upgrades are really not very common at all. Possible, but not likely.
If you booked a GTY, you may find an upgrade. Though I think we hear more about the times that does happen versus hearing that it doesn't, so not as common as one might think.
If you booked a *GT, you might find an upgrade. Not likely from broad category to broad category (i.e., oceanview to verandah). If you consider a higher-number category within the same broad category (i.e., a cat.5 vs cat.7) to be an upgrade, then quite likely.

As PP mentions, book what you will be happy cruising in without expectations.

Enjoy your cruise!

I'm not going to ask for one... That's not how the MAGIC happens... Its when you show up and its there!!! Man! lorimay that is MAGIC....pixiedust:

In our 38 DCL cruises, we were given one surprise, last minute (2 days before sailing) upgrade -- and that was on a Not Very Full transatlantic cruise several years ago. Not expecting that we'll ever see another upgrade!

It really was, it was our second Disney cruise, it seems so long ago now....... My kids were 15 & 11 they are now adults and we have 2 grandchildren.
Time flies I tell you. :)

We have been upgraded twice....our first upgrade was from a Cat. 5 to concierge. It was cabin 8102 on the Wonder. It was awesome!

They seemed to be reported a lot more often in the past. Our first cruise in 2003 we were upgraded from a cat 11 to a cat 8. Our third cruise we and our friends were both upgraded from cat 8s to cat 4s. That was the last time, but we always book the stateroom we want.

We've been on 14 Disney cruises since the Magic set sail way back in 1998. We've never received an upgrade.

We've had 4 of those "little" upgrades - booked 9C GTY and got 9Bs. We've had one (well, two on our B2B cruises) super upgrade - booked a 7A GTY and got 4As.

In 2006 I was pixie dusted from an 11c to the equivalent of a 5. We got an email the night before our cruise.

Smart move on disneys part. Treated me to a verandah that I might never have paid for. I've only been on one cruise since where I didn't pay for one!

Book the suite you want and you won't be disappointed. That being said don't be afraid to ask. I'm pretty sure no one received one who didn't ask.

Ever since they started offering the VGT, OGT and IGT options, upgrades have been few and far between. They used to upgrade those in lower categories to higher and then resell the lower (cheaper) category rooms. Now they use the GT options to fill undersold categories instead.

We also started sailing with DCL from the very beginning and in 33 DCL cruises only 2 times were we surprise upgraded but that was back in the early years.

We booked a GTY oceanview and ended up with a navigator's verandah. (Which was amazing). But otherwise, don't count on upgrades...

I think some people might think upgrades happen a lot just because people who got upgrade talk about it more than those who haven't been.

we've been on 8 cruises, never been upgraded. have asked about one twice, and they were not (to me) something "affordable" (like still >$800)...

We were upgraded from a 5A to a 4A on our 2010 Med cruise. Logged in one day and discovered that our stateroom number had changed. I would have been very happy to have kept our original booking. The larger room was nice but it's only DH and I so we didn't really need it and deck 7 would have worked just fine for us instead of deck 8. I agree with everyone who says that you should book what you really want. If it happens, it might be nice but don't expect it.
