I wanted to make enough to send my girls to Discovery Cove one day and did it. I'm sunburnt and feel like I've been hit by a Mac truck but it was worth it! Cha Ching!

Update:

Thanks all! I forgot to tell ya, I live about a block away from one of our Walmarts...so I put a big LIME GREEN SIGN right at the main entrance to Walmart...I think that's where most of the people came from, even though I placed an add in our paper.

The funny thing that happened was when I was out at 5am putting the sign up at Walmart, thier automatic sprinkler kicked in and I got drenched! My daughter and her boyfriend just happened to go by (on their way to help) and witnessed it.LOL They said it was quite a sight!:o

I love going to yard sales but hate having them!

Glad yours went so well Congratulations

Mal;)

That's terrific! All the successful yard sale stories are inspiring me to have a sale before our trip.

That's terrific, Jennymouse! Glad you met your goal. Mom and Dad keep telling me if I clean out their attic, the yardsale money is mine. Your story has motivated me to do it this summer!

That is great news! You must have made a bundle because I hear that Discovery Cove is expensive! LOL...

Great job!

I think the secret is lots of bright colored signs. I used bright lime green of course, and put them at major intersections all around my house, with small ones with just Yard Sale and an arrow pointing the way about every block so folks could follow them. Even though I placed an add in the paper, lots of folks said they saw the signs.

Mal, I hate doing it too. But, not only did I get the money to send the girls to DC, I got my attic and outside storage building cleaned out for the first time in the eleven years that I've lived here! LOL.

I think I'll do another one in September to sell the leftover stuff.
Sold all of DGD's summer clothes but no one bought the fall/winter stuff...I don't know why, it was only 89 degrees yesterday!

Good luck to anyone who's going to try to have one!

I'm so glad you did well! I trully hate having yard sales. I have to start getting ready for one the weekend before I take the Dkids to DGrandma's house for three weeks.

Any secrets you feel like sharing!?

Thanks!

Eller, I really think the key is location and signs. Like I said, I live close to Walmart, so I left a trail of Bright Lime Green signs for people visiting Walmart to follow to my house....also with all major intersections nearby...I spent so much time putting out my signs that morning, my DD said she was about ready to send out a search party.

If you don't live in a populated area, maybe you know someone who does and you can have your yard sale there instead of home...maybe they'd like to have one with you.

On childrens clothes, put out the ones in season only. I didn't know this either, but no one bought my DGD's fall/winter clothes and they were lots nicer than the summer ones....folks were saying they didn't know what size they'd need come fall/winter...plus it was 86 degrees yesterday so I think it was too hot to even look at all those heavy clothes.

Ummmm, furniture sold well. I had lots of paper back books. And my DGD's toys/stuffed animals and books sold like crazy...don't worry, she still has tons. We had household items that sold well, lamps, decorative pillows, a comfortor/dustruffle/pillow shams set, lamps, some framed prints, etc. I just totally redecorated and sold lots of stuff like that.

There are a lot of men that look for tools, golf clubs, old lawn mowers, computer equipment, etc.

Clean and price everything....remembering folks won't pay much over $20 for anything (except furniture)...no matter how valuable the item was when you bought it.

Don't hesitate to put just about anything out for sale. Things sold I never thought would and we had things left I thought would go right off...maybe I overpriced those things, but I don't think so. We had a ceiling fan that had only been used 6 months priced at $20 that didn't sell. It's a nice one purchased at a lighting store, not a cheapie either. Go figure. But we had a TV that was about 20 years old that sold right off the bat for $10...and it didn't even have a plug on the end of the cord! Go figure...I even sold an old car 8track player for $3. Like I said, put everything out, just clean it first.

Put big colorful or shinny items out where folks driving by could see them...it makes them stop. I noticed when we sold those things, folks just drove slowly by without stopping...window shopping. I stuck some more colorful, bigger things out nearer the curb and they started stopping again.

Price stuff a little bit higher than you want for them because some people like to barter with ya...that way you've got room to do that....some folks simply feel better when they can get things for a dollar less.

Ummmm, that's about all I can think of. Let me know if you have questions. Good luck.

That's great! Thank you! Now I have to go clean everything. . . just what I wanted to do. I need some Disney money. We only have two nights hotel saved. I need (at least) 7 nights hotel saved before I can convince DH to make reservation.

First, let me say, CONGRATULATIONS! Sounds like you had a great sale and cleaned up to boot!

I have a garage sale about every 2 years or so. I also sell lots on eBay as my DS's clothes sell great on there. Since I have lost some weight I have been selling my clothes and they do pretty well too.

So if anyone is doing some spring/summer cleaning, consider eBay as well. Just do a search for what you have to sell under "completed items" and you might be surprised what that old thing sells for-lol!

Since earlier this year I have been selling odds and ends on my auctions and have over a $1000 in pure profit sitting in my vacation bank account just from eBay. I had a garage sale last summer and sold about $1100 worth that went towards our last trip so it definitely can add up.

Congrats on the garage sale. I find too that you have to make the signs big enough to see. Many a time I go by signs for garage sale and I'm squinting to read the thing. You need bright and big printing!!!
