Eller, I really think the key is location and signs. Like I said, I live close to
Walmart, so I left a trail of Bright Lime Green signs for people visiting Walmart to follow to my house....also with all major intersections nearby...I spent so much time putting out my signs that morning, my DD said she was about ready to send out a search party.
If you don't live in a populated area, maybe you know someone who does and you can have your yard sale there instead of home...maybe they'd like to have one with you.
On childrens clothes, put out the ones in season only. I didn't know this either, but no one bought my DGD's fall/winter clothes and they were lots nicer than the summer ones....folks were saying they didn't know what size they'd need come fall/winter...plus it was 86 degrees yesterday so I think it was too hot to even look at all those heavy clothes.
Ummmm, furniture sold well. I had lots of paper back books. And my DGD's toys/stuffed animals and books sold like crazy...don't worry, she still has tons. We had household items that sold well, lamps, decorative pillows, a comfortor/dustruffle/pillow shams set, lamps, some framed prints, etc. I just totally redecorated and sold lots of stuff like that.
There are a lot of men that look for tools, golf clubs, old lawn mowers, computer equipment, etc.
Clean and price everything....remembering folks won't pay much over $20 for anything (except furniture)...no matter how valuable the item was when you bought it.
Don't hesitate to put just about anything out for sale. Things sold I never thought would and we had things left I thought would go right off...maybe I overpriced those things, but I don't think so. We had a ceiling fan that had only been used 6 months priced at $20 that didn't sell. It's a nice one purchased at a lighting store, not a cheapie either. Go figure. But we had a TV that was about 20 years old that sold right off the bat for $10...and it didn't even have a plug on the end of the cord! Go figure...I even sold an old car 8track player for $3. Like I said, put everything out, just clean it first.
Put big colorful or shinny items out where folks driving by could see them...it makes them stop. I noticed when we sold those things, folks just drove slowly by without stopping...window shopping. I stuck some more colorful, bigger things out nearer the curb and they started stopping again.
Price stuff a little bit higher than you want for them because some people like to barter with ya...that way you've got room to do that....some folks simply feel better when they can get things for a dollar less.
Ummmm, that's about all I can think of. Let me know if you have questions. Good luck.
